F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

No, that's not my point. I'm talking about races, not championships going down to the line.

To the casual follower, the vast majority, who maybe only catch half the races in a season, the individual race is the most important thing about Formula 1. I think we should concentrate on making individual races as exciting as possible - and not worry too much about what that means for the championship.

Erm, wont me much fun watching the rest of the races in the season if 1st place is settled by half way...

Depends really, doesn't it?

If the racing is close, with mucho overtaking and action yet one guy somehow comes out on top enough to win the title by halfway then so what? It'll still be fun watching the rest of the season. If the racing isn't even nearly close, with sod-all overtaking and only the odd spin or blown engine to count as action then it wouldn't matter whether the title was won at round 8 or round 17 - it'll be crap either way.

If they want to change the points system and fancy bringing some strategy back into it, then they should go back to the "best x results from y rounds" formula. Senna used it to good effect in '88 - Prost scored more points overall, but when the best 11 results (from 15 or 16 races) were taken Senna came out as champion. You should get a point for pole (and qually should return to the classic 1 hour, 12 laps low fuel shoot-out) and a point for the fastest lap. The team should get a constructors championship point for the least amount of time spent stationary in the pitlane - teams might go for fewer-stop strategies in order to grab that point if they feel that their driver isn't necessarily going to be a threat for the points-paying positions, or they might go aggressive and hope that he can drag the car up into the points.

I really don't see the big deal about the championship having to be decided at the last race of the season. Provided the racing is good and the driver that wins it deserves it, who cares which round he wins it at?

I don't agree, at all. Whilst I am an F1 enthusiast I also watch bikes, very casually.

Whilst at any point through an F1 season I'd be able to quote the points for at least the top six places in the championship I never have any clue what's going on in the bike championships. I watch the bike racing as a casual follower, never make a particular effort to to watch/record the races, never been to a race in person. However - watching bike races is still great fun.

I expect for the majority of F1 followers - the casual one who watch F1 like I watch bikes, similarly wouldn't care too much about the championship and would rather just watch a great race. The current system, with its high reward for consistency, often doesn't deliver great races.

Agreed.

Nice one boys. Just what we need to completely overshadow the first race. Couldn't have asked for a clarification of the rules after the first round could you? No, you had to go and make sure that the result of this race had more of a chance at being decided in the stewards office.

Excellent. I look forward to their utterly retarded ruling then.

wouldnt it be nice to just get ON with the racing? :(

Stewards threw out the protests - not will come the appeals to the FIA, the the appeals to the appeals, the the FIA will appeal their own results....

And at some point it'll all be made out as a conspiracy to aid Ferrari in their plot for world domination.

Oh, and someone will blame Bernie for it.

Depends if Ferrari win the appeal or not. ;)

Renault and Red Bull have also appealed. Will we see calls of "Renault International Assistance!" or "Red Bull International Assistance!" if appeals go ahead and are won?

I'm thinking not. People will fixate on Ferrari once more. Hey ho.

It is - he should have forced Thwax Mosley out when he had the chance last year. ;)

Good point, well made.

And BMW - but they got the paperwork wrong *D'OH!*
But does it matter? Ferrari are just the sons of Satan. :D They even use his colour. ;)

Just wait for the appeals of the race results too. Yay :(

Don't see what needs clarifying. rules are there to be bent. tough luck if you didn't think r it. Rules should not be changed or clarified till the end of the season. Once it gets the ok from the stewards that's that. Don't like it, well copy the design.

Ohh great news for BrawnGP lets hope it all goes well and the deal is signed.,

Sucks, doesn't it? :(

Still.....despite it all, I can't wait for the cars to hit the track in Melbourne. F1 is still one of my favourite sports, even if the current state of it sorely tests my patience.

So, the protests against the diffuser has failed...at this point.

The Australian GP will be run and depending on the performances of the teams (more specifically - BrawnGP), I think we will see appeals. In particular, I feel that if Ferrari get battered by BrawnGP, then we shall see an appeal which will probably be successful, if only to ensure that Ferrari have a good chance at winning the titles.

Even though I'm not a great admirer of Button, I sincerely hope that BrawnGP humiliate the opposition this weekend. If both their cars can lap the entire field, it would be quite an achievement and will certainly force other teams to study the BrawnGP cars closer and perhaps come up with new designs. Unfortunately, if this does happen, then the chances of the FIA intervening will become greater.

But anyway, not long to go now gents.

I think they should just increase the weighting for coming 1st over 2nd, e.g. award something like 15 points for 1st.
