F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

If it's going to be a comedy nightmare where the rest of the world laughs, because we cant organise a **** up in a brewery, then yeah...
Unless there's bulletproof (realistic) plans, they'd be better off just leaving it.

I cant say ive had any issues with Silverstone. Ive been to 3 of the last 4 races there (trust me to not go to the one Lewis won!) and have not had any issues from a spectator point of view. The only issue with Silverstone is that it looses money and Bernie doesnt like the hospitality... And the loss of money is partially to do with the cost Bernie puts on hosting a GP anyway! There is nothing wrong with the circuit from a drivers and spectators point of view. Infact, isnt it a favorate track among the drivers?

So your happy that there will be no British GP from 2010 then?

well Bernie said it will only be at donington and with there delays in planning permission now this idea that people will have to walk there from across the country just makes me laugh.

As does the whole idea that everyone should use public transport in cities, its already bursting at the seams, i'm sure a few more million wont make a difference? sigh.

Couldn't they just do what Alton Towers does and have car parks away from the entrances and then have a monorail/railway/buses to the entrance.
It's a pity Coulthard wasn't still driving cos he could have used the monorail to get back to the pits once he'd crashed on the first lap :p

Silverstone = good.
Strange, car free events that'll end up in hilarious news stories and Bernie whinging = bad.

Well it works perfectly well for Silverstone. There is 3 massive park and ride setups that we have used race day every year we have been. A large proportion of the crowd are shipped in by bus after leaving there cars on an airfield.

But there isnt even any suggestions like this for Donnington, they just assume people wil use the existing links...... uh, howabout no.

I certainly am.

Silvedrstone is a horiffic place and Donnington will be a laughing stock.

Both are substantially more expensive to go to than it it to spend the weekend in Belgium at a good racetrack.

so thats how they plan to get round the access problems

Get everybody to use public transport.

Having said that, given the proximity of the GP to east midlands airport, if there was a direct bus service from the airport, and you can could get cheap tickets from easyjet from say Leeds Bradford (in my case) to leicester for not much more than the petrol would cost me (about £30) it would be dead easy

Step 1) leave car at airport parking
Step 2) board plane
Step 3) step off plane into bus
Step 4) walk to seat

and repeat in reverse order.

If they get it right it could work. But like all things donnington, they wont.

OK this whole "car free event" thing isn't new.

When I went to Japan last year for the F1 that too was a car free event but the japanese are probably miles better at planning.

For Japan depending on which grand stand you where sitting in you had to then travel to various train stations using the normal public transport. We where then met at the train stations by a fleet of coaches which picked people up and took them into the circuit and then back for more. I think it was about an hour commute on the coach.

I think the plan is a quite a good one but I think the crux will be in the execution!

Japanese planning, public transport and infrastructure most certainly does not equal British planning, public transport and infrastructure. It will be a monumental disaster if it goes ahead.

Completely agree and on race day the drop off spots involved the coaches crossing a muddy field and now a steep muddy, grass covered, incline! Took us ages to get in on race day.

A few pics of the coaches can be seen on my webspace http://www.mission74.com/simpleviewer/Japan - Race Day/

We weren't allowed to take notes or take pictures without asking. Pretty understandable really.

The place is HUGE. The tour made me appreciate just how much effort actually goes in and showed that what you see on a Sunday afternoon really is just the tip of the iceberg.

My memory skills have failed me, but I have done a quick overview on my blog.

Bah was off with a knackered back so mssed your visit. You know where you saw the 2 auotclaves? Theres another 2 going opposite very shortly, glad you enjoyed it though mate.
