F1 2009 Season discussion/development thread

i didnt think you could get carbon fibre see-through, a light plastic?

Polycarbonate.

Been used on a couple of trackday and sprint specials. Most successfully the Lotus Expose - which is one of the coolest cars I've seen for a long time.

Apply thin paint and it's perfectly possible to be seethrough in certain conditions. It may not be strong enough to cope with F1 loads though. It can be used in a composite with Carbon fibre, but then it wouldn't be transparent.

MY EYES!!!!

THEY BURN!!!!

The Williams however, if you ignore the narrowness of the rear wing, is by far the best looking car so far. The nose is well proportioned and the rest of the car flows very well. I also notice they have adopted the 'Ferrari rule bending' winglets :)

lines match up too well for a reflection-

pic 1, the slots on the sides of the rear wing carry on perfectly 'through' the cover

pic 2, you can see the blue of the track through the cover and the left exhaust matches perfectly.

Definitely see through.

Not sure why they would do that, however.

Interestingly a lot of the regulations regarding shadowing of surfaces on/near the floor plane of the car refer to "when visible from below" - if you made bodywork see through you could *technically* get a whole load of bodywork appendages through :)

That's really hard to tell whether its clear or just very, very reflective.
Looking at the photos from the end of last week you can see the same effects, I'm having trouble believing the reflections are that sharp. However the pics aren't quite clear enough to say its definitely clear.

in very other photo other than those 2 it just looks painted shiny grey/silver.

Show me a photo of something behind the car (like a tree) that can be seen through it and ill believe you.

lol, it's a reflection!

I just came here to point at people on Autosport forum so we could all laugh at them for thinking the same thing. :D

There are loads of pictures where you can see it's a reflection. Look at the 'e' of the vodafone here.

Look here where the exhaust reflection distorts as the engine cover comes out:\

pic one you can quite clearly see a bottom of a 'v' rather than an 'e' in the reflection.

Shame the Mclaren overhead is slightly off true.
