Bernie today said he couldn't afford the loss of a GP as he is obviously skint , so has an alternative ;)

It appears Ross did have something up his sleeve. The Merc is in the lead!

I really don't get the Heidfeld hate on ocuk....

Solid driver, doesn't make mistakes, can overtake and has matched most of his teammates who then move on to other teams.....

Browse other websites and he is highly rated, yet ocuk as a whole tends to hate him? :s

I think its 50/50 on here. I've said before (and a couple of others) that he is fine but not really WDC material.

I don't hate him.

He is a solid No.2 driver and would be a valuable addition to many teams. The main problem with him is he is an unadventurous choice. Personally, I think he would do well, if he were paired with Vettel, in that he won't threaten him, but at the same time, he would bring home a hatful of points. I think Mercedes are looking for an all German line-up and I feel Vettel and Heidfeld would score more points for Mercedes than MSc and Rosberg.

I view Heidfeld as a poor man's Button.

Sunama has it more or less spot on, he's a steady Eddie of sorts, but nothing to get excited about. What Renault will find is that he'll tick over the points but he'll make Petrov look better...

There's no real hatred of the guy, but he's not exciting or really worth getting too excited about...

Agree with this. He was the 'sensible' choice to replace Kubica. He's never been electric with his pace but he invariably brings the car home for a decent points finish. The bonus for Renault might be that he helps bring Petrov along more than Kubica would've done - he may well be 'contracted' to share setup information and really anything to do with the 'feel' of the car that a seasoned F1 driver might be able to tell an almost-rookie.

How many years has he had in f1? Yet he's done absolutely nothing of note to have him stand out. He doesn't make good passes, he doesn't consistently look fast in qfy compared to his team mates and doesn't finish that far up the road from drivers he's paired with.

Compare that to Alonso in a minardi, Kobi at toyota etc. These drivers stood out and made the world take notice instantly and in their first seasons did more of note than Heidy has done in god knows how many years.

I don't hate him, I think he's a damn nice guy. I don't see him as a poor mans Button, I see him as a poor mans DC ;)

He's had enough chances, it's a flaw in the current regs that it's too hard for new drivers to come in and make an impact due to lack of testing. This leaves the only resort and logical way forward for renault was to run a driver who shouldn't be near an f1 car anymore. To be fair to him, he's not the only one.

Just feels to false and artificial for me.

If we don't have this "false and artificial" method, would you rather have processional racing?

I would much rather have the movable rear wing, for more exciting racing and the possibility of making more mistakes.

For me, the movable rear wing has increased the excitement, going into the first GP of the season.
