F1 2012 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

I think it was a case of "Are you with us or with the other F1 teams? Us? Ok, you're in!"

I firmly believe this is what happened.

The FIA wanted small budget teams working under a cap with everyone running Cosworth engines. So they signed up 3 small budget teams, under the promise of a budget cap, who agreed to run Cosworth engines. Political choices for an F1 that never materialised.

I think its telling that the only new team that looks to be moving forward is the one that wasn't in the original selection (Caterham).

HRT and Virgin were, and probably still are, screwed by the whole promise of the $50m budget that never came in.

Did Caterham come in to replace USF1 then? I forget that bit of F1 history. :p Edit: Just checked Wikipedia and found they replaced BMW Sauber.

BMW Sauber are still here, as Sauber.

USF1, Manor, and Campos were the 3 selected. USF1 flopped, Manor went into a deal with Virgin, and Campos were sold and rebranded HRT.

Lotus Racing, as it was back then, were signed up after Toyota left and USF1 flopped. I think you have read the same Wiki I have, and I think its wrong when it says they took BMWs place. It was a time when everyone was jumping ship though, in the space of 12 months Honda, Toyota, BMW, and Renault all left, so they may well have taken a spot vacated by BMW, with the Toyota spot being filled by Sauber.

Yep, we're on the same Wiki page. I too was confused by the bit about replacing Sauber. Could it not have happened that BMW withdrew from F1, thus cancelling the team's entry for the next season, which Lotus then took. Peter Sauber then buy's his team back, takes 14th place, conditional on either a team dropping out or all teams OK'ing 28 cars on the grid.

I got that from the Wikipedia article lower down I must confess. :D

Ooh! Shots of the new Caterham due to be launched in F1 Racing tomorrow have been leaked from the printers! Don't look if you don't want to see it yet.

Nose looks really odd, with the raised sides and long flat 'platypus' like front.

Again, looks more evolution that revolution.

Some people will have had the magazine arrive today.
All I can say is, it ain't pretty.

Rear end looks very tight, circular airbox instead of the blade concept but I'm kind of expecting that nose style to be the standard this year.

so after trying to get an all spanish lineup, most probably for a sponsor(s) they went with who would give them the most money. will they make the australian grid?
