F1 2012 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

I don't quite understand what your getting at with Button though?
he never stood out during his races with bar and whoever else he raced for if it were modern times he would never have been given the time to mature.

kind of goes against mty argument that most of these young drivers dont need a second chance though :P
people like alonso , vettel , hamilton instantly stood out as future champions.

people like senna , petrov , kobayashi , moldanado etc imo dont stand out, same for the torro rosso drivers whos names i cant even remember :p

it shows that formula one is now achieved via sponsorship and not racing skill tbh

Hulkenburgs pole was not skill, it was fluke with the tyres. Ok, maybe not a fluke, but a bit of a calculated gamble by the team at least.

He deserves more credit than that, he had 2 laps which were quick enough for pole. Others tried on slicks and couldn't match him.

Button entered F1 with Williams coming straight from a Formula 3 seat. He clearly stood out enough to jump an entire generation of feeder formula.

But yes, money trumps skill in getting into F1 now.

Only because they didn't gamble on slicks quick enough and Hulk got heat into his due to the additional laps.

Not saying it wasn't a good lap, but the only reason he was 1st and not 8th or 9th was because Williams gambled earlier than the rest on slicks.

"Never stood out"? Huh? He made a mockery of Jacques in a team that had been built around the former world champion. He managed ten podiums in 2004 and even managed two in 2005 when BAR gave him an absolute dog of a thing.

Apparently Renault's 2nd seat will be announced soon and it won't be Petrov...

Not surprising given his outburst :p

Hope the news about Petrov is true, would prefer any of the rumoured drivers over him really.

What a complete load of *****

Apart from his win in the BAR around hungary in 2006 - he has been acclaimed as one of the best developement drivers on the grid from Williams, BAR (with Brawn), Brawn and now McLaren

He didnt stand out yet Williams wanted him back desperately while he was at BAR (apart from his first year at Williams which was also pretty darn good for a rookie in an average car) - yeah ok the Renualt years where bad, partly down to JB admittedly but I think FB had a lot to do with that also given that he was a personal manager to both drivers in the other car (so got bonuses accordingly) for both years JB was there (and even FB has said this year that JB is a much better driver than he gave him credit for)

So Total/Renault got their way then. I suspect Grosjean won't last all of 2012 though.

He really should have a better stab at it than last time and is the better choice than Petrov/Senna... At least he doesn't have Flav bumming Alonso and ignoring anyone else at the team this time round

Why not? He is GP2 champion, and he won the AutoGP series, and did well in some GT races. He has achieved a dam site more than most of the other rookies that joined this year or will be joining next year.

His kamikaze into Button at Spa wasn't exactly inspired driving. Then again nobody in the second Renault seat has been that spectacular since 2004 so perhaps Briatore does have something to do with it.

I'm not saying he's necessarily a bad driver now, just that Bouiller will probably find a way to scapegoat him when the car turns out to be crap again. I'm also unsure about judging a driver by lower-level formulae - by that logic Mansell should never have made it into F1, and of course others that did well in F3/F3000 turned out to be average in F1.
