F1 2012 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

Id rather skill got people seats rather than the current trend of money or being teachers pet.

It's been like that for a while, plenty of promising drivers never make it up the ladder because of financial issues. As for knowing the right person\having the right connections, that's human nature for you... doesn't just apply to F1 drivers either.

Like I said, Grosjean is there because Total and Renault effectively threatened to make Bouiller's operations much more expensive for 2012.

Briatore wasn't exactly a nice guy and we all remember crashgate, but the team won races and championships under his tenure, which is more than can be said for the current Genii-Lotus incarnation.

Yeah, the difference now is thoroughly average drivers who have achieved very little are buying seats and winners of feeder formulas are being left out in the cold. Pay seats have always been there, but I don't think they have been blocking other drivers to this extent before.

I don't really know a great deal about contracts, but as Petrov was tied down for next season as well. What happens to the contract? Or was there a get out clause for Renault?

Must admit, you gotta feel sorry for Senna who has been dropped now by another team.

Most likely, Petrov will receive a payout from Renault. But it all depends on what the contract specifies.

Really makes you wonder why people use contracts.

Football clubs complain that they ain't worth the money their printed on when players refuse to play, and F1 teams simply change the terms.

I'm sure Renault spoke to Petrov about this but still, to be able to just tell a driver you ain't wanted and thats it.. really must be frustrating for the driver.

Similar thing when Senna suddenly came into the team half way through the season and someone else gets dropped mid season.

why? he was a pay driver and never did anything to warrant beeing on the grid on talent alone.

all he is ever going to do is make up the numbers

Personally I don't think he's had much of a chance.

First he was (originally) going to get an opportunity with Honda, until Ross Brawn took Rubens as Brawn.
Then Senna joins Hispania and gets dropped at the end of the season, which was his only chance to show what he can do, in a very poor team.
And now he's dropped again after half a season when he was pretty good at qualifying, yet was unlucky by having a few knocks during race day.

I don't think he has had much opportunity.

Senna got into F1 on the hype of his name. Unfortunately it hasn't turned into sponsorship so he has always been in a position where he is under threat.

Yes he's a nice guy and has shown some glimpses of talent here and there, but when it comes down to the current GP2 champion, or someone who was a midfielder in GP2 riding the success of his uncles name, I'm glad Grosjean got the seat.

I'm not so sure if thats the case, I mean that's one hell of a gamble just because somebody has the same surname as an ex F1 legend.

Agree with Grosjean though, he has been great in other formula's, better than Senna who for a long part of his career didn't race.

I hope he gets a place with another team though.

Bit harsh on Senna given the fact he wasn't allowed to compete in the lower formulas over the last decade, he hasn't had the single seat experience that everyone else benefited from.
