F1 2013 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

Its all about money. I imagine a big Chinese firm has written them a large cheque on the condition that Ma gets a race seat.

Should we start betting on how many races into the season it will take before he actually gets within the 107% rule? I'm going for the 3rd round.

Maybe. I don't know what the conditions of his sponsorship are. As I've said, the team is going nowhere without a budget increase - if merely having him as a reserve brings in valuable $$$ to improve the F113, then why not?

Well, F1 has seen such distinguished drivers as Alex Yoong, so who knows :p

Theres absolutely no need to belittle another drivers achievements, hes made it as far as F1 which is a huge achievement in it self.

HRT is no doubt the hardest car on the grid to drive, most the top drivers would probably struggle to get to grips with it with only the odd session as well.

I guess some people only feel good about themselves when they are putting others down.

anyway if his times werent set in a qualifying session they cant be compared to qualifying times with any relevance tracks improve as the rubber goes down ,the conditions wont be the same , the setup work more than likely hasnt been done at that point

So yeah, the big achievement was being able to get financial backing. No different to say Maldonado with Venezuela backing him, except he has already proven to actually have pace.

It isn't like we're having a go at someone who has risen through the ranks and won titles in a range of single seaters here is it. Good luck to him though, he needs to prove himself.

The 1600cc CTCC is the second tier of Chinese touring car racing. Its like giving Jack Goff an F1 race seat.

If this turns out to be true, it will be the pinnacle of modern era pay drivers, and I expect the F1 press will have a field day.

Good luck expecting someone of that calibre to sign for HRT, even if they could afford to pay both drivers. :p

You'd hope they have at least finished top 3 in GP2 standings, I think some drivers just do two years there and win it second time round IIRC?

No, and that would disqualify Perez and Kobayashi, for starters.

I also don't think they're necessarily indicative of future performance. Hamilton thrashed everyone in the junior ranks, but in F1 he's been a mixed bag.

Whoah, what?

Hamilton who almost beat the reigning WDC in his first year, and only lost out on the WDC himself by a single point, and then went on to win it in his second year! And since then is still considered to be one of the top 2 fastest guys on the grid?

Hamilton is by far the most successful graduate of GP2 into F1.

Back on Ma Quangodokomiyo, the main point is that he doesn't fulfil the requirements for a Super License.

That was four years ago though. What has he done recently? Button was matching him in results across a season. Also, Hamilton's going to have to keep his temper tantrums in check because I doubt Mercedes will have time for that crap.

Anyway, there are multiple drivers in F1 that did not finish in the top 3 of GP2 within two years, and they seem to do alright (the much praised Perez comes to mind, even Charles Pic has been beating Glock).

Assuming the intention is to put him in a race seat in the future, there is the testing mileage clause in the FIA regulations.

Perez came a close second to Maldonado in GP2 after 2 years.

I think Duke was generalizing rather than stating a firm rule.

Hamilton won GP2 in his first and only year. Excluding the 2012 season, all but 1 GP2 champion (Pantano) has made it to F1 the following year, all but 2 of the runners up have also made it to F1 and most of the 3rd placed drivers have had some F1 involvement. Hamilton is the only one to have won in his first year in GP2 and also the only one to have won an F1 WDC. I know its a bit squewed by Vettel getting to F1 without going through GP2, but using Hamilton as an example of how GP2 performance doesn't translate to F1 is pretty much the worst example you could have chosen.

So, Kobayashi out, Gutierrez in

BREAKING NEWS
This just in. I've got bad news for Kamui Kobayashi fans, I'm afraid. In perhaps the worst kept secret in F1, the Japanese driver has been given the boot from Sauber with Esteban Gutierrez getting promoted from his reserve driver role to a race seat alongside Nico Hulkenberg for next season.
Charles Pic across to Caterham, no replacement announced!

And like London buses, here's another bit of breaking news for you. Charles Pic has decided to switch his black and red Marussia overalls for the green and yellow of Caterham next season.

In what looks like a sideways step from one back-of-the-grid team to another, the 22-year-old Frenchman, who has done a decent job alongside the experienced Timo Glock in his debut season, has decided he needs a change.

This is good news for British fans, of course, as it means Max Chilton, Marussia's reserve driver, is in pole position to get promoted into the race seat and make it four Brits on the grid next year

KOV will go unless they can gain 10th in the constructors, PET or another paid driver will come in otherwise.

Potentially awkward weekend for PIC. His future employer needs to beat his current employer in the constructors.
