F1 2015 - Teams and Drivers - Who goes where?!

Alonso didn't know what to say when they asked him if he wanted button to be his teammate.

Was pretty funny :D Video here https://vid.me/fiMu

Would you not struggle to stay positive when you're being hung out to dry like he is at the moment?

Oh yeah totally, I just thought with the recent rumours going round he'd look slightly more upbeat.

There was also a question asked about having less complicated cars, without so many driver controls on the wheel. Though it was phrased as "less button's in F1". Button's face.

Oh man that was hard to watch,

Judging by the uncomfortableness of Alonso, it seems fair to say that he has decide against Button being his team-mate... after all if he can choose which team to drive for, then I'm sure he picks his team-mate...

I think you might be reading a bit too much into it, it's more the fact he doesn't want to/can't let officially let the cat out of the bag that he's off to McLaren.

The question caught him off guard, if he had more time to prepare he probably would've done a better F1 PR job of it with an answer like ...
"Jenson is a great racer and would be a valuable asset to any team, so wherever I end up racing next year it would be very good to have a team mate like him" then completely dodging the issue of going to McLaren :p

and I thought journo's were bad - talk about making 2+2 = 5 Million

If Honda are insisting on Alonso then I doubt McLaren would allow him to choose his teammate.

Chap on PH says they've offered Button a contract but he's not happy with the terms and they're negotiating.

That's where no-one really has a clue what the facts are, it could well be button's management stalling the announcement. Too many jumping to conclusions...

McLaren said earlier this week they'll announce their line up on the 1st December.

Indeed.

This decision was probably made in a high level (committee) meeting (thats how McLaren seem to operate), so I doubt that they will go against their own deadline.

You will have to wait till 1st Dec.

I wonder if Alonso will have a say in who his team-mate is, at McLaren, next year.

I wonder if the "terms" relate to him being No.2 driver.

Remember, in 2007, Alonso regretted that he didnt get his No.1 status, in writing. He assumed this was the case and it all came to a head.
This time, he will want it in writing. McLaren might be forcing No.2 status, contractually, on Button.

I read Alonso's reaction in the opposite way, like others said, didn't want to give it away he was going there and that he was likely to be his team mate after all any way.

What would that actually mean though?

Not sure if serious? :p Guessing it means he'd have to let him past if ahead and most likely not win a race if the car is up to it unless Alonso is way back or broken down / crashed.

Pure guess but wondering if the "negotiations" are around a bigger bonus for podiums / wins if JB has to take a significant cut in "basic" salary

Also how the "contractual" No2 spot allows for this IF the team force him to give one or the other up so that Alonso can take the position

Which is what a lot of people seem to assume a number 2 contract means, but can you really see any race driver worth his salt actually agreeing to such a contract? Especially a previous WDC.

If McLaren are seriously offering that then it would have been over ages ago. Why would Button agree to a contract banning him from winning, when he could go do any manner of other series and race. If Boulier offered him that, he'd have told him to shove it up his rear.

Nope, the idea that a race driver would agree to not race is one of those things that are talked about in F1 that common sense means would never happen.

In general I would agree with you - but given the specifics of the situation - I really don't know.

At the very least JB will probably be forced to accept a lower basic package from McLaren (whether that's with additional bonuses or not is entirely speculation)......IF the "de facto" No 2 was part of that deal, or meant walking away from F1 its hard to know what anyone would do in JB's shoes right now.

Im not saying it would be, but there is also no guarantee that JB would excel in sportscars /endurance (I sincerely hope he would, and certain skills he has may entice him in that direction) .....but there is no guarantee and there is also no leading spot (for definite) open either
