Seems odd to me that Alfa are running Kubica instead of Zhou, giving Bottas the extra half day. I would think they'd want to give the new boy as much time as possible on track. Mind you, they probably get much better feedback from Bottas.

They basically gave up on last years car completely and it shows with how detailed their car is.

We shall whether it pays off, but I was expecting it to be a complete damp squib. If they have made the most of that shift, well, good for them.

Morning session times and laps:

1. Leclerc (Ferrari) 1m20.165s, C3, 80 laps
2. Norris (McLaren) 1m20.474s, C3, 50 laps
3. Russell (Mercedes) 1m20.784s, C3, 77 laps
4. Vettel (Aston Martin) 1m21.276s, C3, 52 laps
5. Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) 1m21.638s, C3, 43 laps
6. Verstappen (Red Bull) 1m22.246s, C2, 80 laps
7. Alonso (Alpine) 1m23.317s, C3, 54 laps
8. Latifi (Williams) 1m23.379s, C3, 66 laps
9. Mazepin (Haas) 1m26.455s, C2, 20 laps
10. Kubica (Alfa Romeo) 1m25.909s, C3, 9 laps

Good numbers of laps for the top three, fuel pump problems a cooling leak for Haas, DRS opening problems for Alpine, Alfa had a "small part" break. Not much point trying to read anything into the first morning of testing, but notable their about 4s down on the lap times from the first day of testing in 2020.

Thanks for the number of laps summary was not obvious to see on bbc or sky feed.

Pole last year was a 1.16.7. 3.5 seconds down on first day of testing. They might be faster this year, wernt they meant to be losing some Downforce?

When the new rules were first announced, FIA said they'd be a few seconds slower, but that number came down as teams started submitting designs to the FIA for approval. With the engine upgrades (assuming they work) and the crazy bits we're seeing in testing, I would be surprised if they equalled 2021.
