Pretty bad blow-up too by the looks of it, with thick brown smoke as well as the usual grey. From the first shot I thought it might just be a brake fire after being told to stop, but definitely not from the later shots!

Alpine they told Alonso to "stop, due to a loss of oil pressure". That's an understatement if the loss of oil pressure came from the big hole which had been blown in the block.

Bad news for them. Prost said before he left that they were having a lot of blow ups on the dyno, but I suppose that's to be expected when you're developing a new engine.

Still, can't read too much into a single failure.

McLaren colours look really good in the pictures from the test.

Good to see Russell has the Mercedes sandbagging phrasing down to a tee already after just a couple of days of media interviews. :D

Was 3 years since I went to the testing with Williams, after the last 2 years that seems like an eternity now.

Red flag so I assume the morning is over, these are the standings:

1. Russell (Mercedes) 1m19.233s, C5, 66 laps
2. Verstappen (Red Bull) 1m19.756s, C3, 58 laps
3. Vettel (Aston Martin) 1m19.824s, C4, 48 laps
4. Leclerc (Ferrari) 1m19.831s, C3, 44 laps
5. Latifi (Williams) 1m20.699s, C4, 5 laps
6. Norris (McLaren) 1m20.827s, C3, 52 laps
7. Alonso (Alpine) 1m21.242s, C3, 12 laps
8. Zhou (Alfa Romeo) 1m21.939s, C3, 41 laps
9. Gasly (AlphaTauri) 1m22.469s, C2, 40 laps
10. Albon (Williams) 1m22.652s, C2, 21 laps
11. Mazepin (Haas) 1m26.229s, C3, 9 laps

Weird that Williams switched drivers half way through the session. Not sure if that has anything to do with the plan to artificially wet the track this afternoon or whether there was something that forced the change, it wasn't in their published plans.

Just a hydraulic seal that's failed, nothing more according to the team.

I'm glad the Russian grand prix has been cancelled.

I actually like the track, but Russia shouldn't be able to take part in or host major peaceful international sporting events whilst they invade and try to occupy another country for no good reason other than their own paranoid nonsense.

Maybe we should do what they did in Athletics and allow them to hold it in Russia but they have to change the name to "Not the Russian GP".

Russia should be banned from any sporting events for a year for every week they are in Ukraine.

Right decision but I don't think that F1 made the decision based on their morals because they have none.

End of day 3 results:

1. Hamilton (Mercedes) 1m19.138s, C5, 94 laps
2. Russell (Mercedes) 1m19.233s, C5, 66 laps
3. Perez (Red Bull) 1m19.556s, C4, 74 laps
4. Verstappen (Red Bull) 1m19.756s, C3, 59 laps
5. Vettel (Aston Martin) 1m19.824s, C5, 48 laps
6. Leclerc (Ferrari) 1m19.831s, C3, 44 laps
7. Sainz (Ferrari) 1m20.072s, C3, 92 laps
8. Albon (Williams) 1m20.318s, C4, 94 laps
9. Latifi (Williams) 1m20.699s, C4, 13 laps
10. Ricciardo (McLaren) 1m20.790s, C3, 86 laps
11. Norris (McLaren) 1m20.827s, C3, 52 laps
12. Alonso (Alpine) 1m21.242s, C3, 12 laps
13. Zhou (Alfa Romeo) 1m21.939s, C3, 41 laps
14. Gasly (AlphaTauri) 1m22.469s, C2, 40 laps
15. Mazepin (Haas) 1m26.229s, C3, 9 laps
16. Bottas (Alfa Romeo) 1m30.433s, I, 10 laps

(Some discussion whether Russell's time was on C5s or actually on C4s or even C3s)

Massive laps today for Mercedes, whilst a lot of other teams struggled to get the laps in today. Worrying for Haas and Alfa who are well down on getting a full set of running over the 3 days.

Surely not unusual to have the test driver there at a test session, and if he's there surely not unusual to have a photoshoot. I wouldn't read too much into this.

It's pretty unusual to have a full photoshoot in the pitlane and paddock with a reserve driver in race suit and with his helmet. They're usually done in controlled environments before the launch of the car. Not when there's suddenly the possibility that you'll need a replacement driver.

So according to Russell and Norris, following other cars seems better but the slipstream effect is much reduced.

Could mean closer racing in the corners but a lack of passes not in the DRS zones :(

Very detailed answer from Leclerc on following other cars: "From 3 seconds to 1s behind the car in front, you actually can follow closer, then from 1s to 5 tenths it's similar to the feeling I had last year, and then from 5 tenths to extremely close, this is much better than last year."

I can't wait for this season to start, have a feeling it's going to be a lot of fun!

Believe that was the aim to be able to follow closer in corners
However it’s kinda undone if when they get to the straight they cannot perform the manoeuvre
