Should have made sure it didn't break down on track then. :D

Ah yeah that makes more sense :)
Since it sounds like you were working in F1 at the time, the 2001 Brazilian GP - was it the tyres that was causing the aquaplaning in turn 3 or the car floating? I suspect back then it was the car, but they were on inters (as the rest of the track was nearly ready for slicks) so it could have been the tyres.

Lovely pic of the underfloor of these new cars:

Bet Williams are happy to have that shared around.

An example of how top teams operate vs others potentially? Redbull covered the car before having it recovered at the end of yesterdays testing, wheras Williams look to have just hoisted it up (admittedly they have bigger issues right now but still)

It doesn't look like a major issue at Aston Martin. The car is back and Vettel has his helmet straight back on. They're looking around the right-rear though.

Is that the car that was on fire? Probably wouldn't be allowed to cover it up if still hot.

Humph yeah 2001 Brazil :mad:, and people wonder today why Max has a history of barging people off the track, he learnt from his dad, who was doing it way back then, took Montoya clean out for no reason.....

But yes, to your question, for us, (Williams) it was the tyres we were not running low enough for the plank to get involved, not sure on some other teams, there was a bit of variety in strategies for that race, as some teams saw the weather predictions for the weekend, and had a more circumspect setup, others went for performance and ran lower, thus getting into trouble when the weather did hit.
Although there was also a drain that flooded and overflowed on turn 3 IIRC, so that didn't help, caused a lot more standing/flowing water there than other places.

They're doing a practice standing start from the grid, but Red Bull and Mercedes stuffed up and didn't get their cars out the pits in time to take part. Ah, wait, they're letting them go round and take part.

edit And now Bottas has stopped on track. Session over.

Morning times and laps:

1. Ocon (Alpine) 1m34.276s, C4, 59 laps
2. Leclerc (Ferrari) 1m34.366s, C3, 54 laps
3. Verstappen (Red Bull) 1m35.874s, C2, 45 laps
4. Vettel (Aston Martin) 1m36.020s, C3, 46 laps
5. Norris (McLaren) 1m36.354s, C2, 29 laps
6. Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) 1m36.802s, C3, 44 laps
7. Bottas (Alfa Romeo) 1m36.987s, C2, 25 laps
8. Schumacher (Haas) 1m37.846s, C2, 23 laps
9. Russell (Mercedes) 1m38.585s, C2, 67 laps
10. Latifi (Williams) 1m39.845s, C2, 12 laps

Williams, Haas, Aston Martin, and Alfa Romeo all had car issues of varying degree. Not sure why Norris still seems to be struggling for laps, and has anyone seen an update on Dani Ric? Is he still feeling unwell.

It was 2003. I wouldn't care, I've watched that race probably more than a dozen times too! I've seen the 2001 race nearly as many times.

Thanks. I was just interested. It's a classic race, though in a way for all the wrong reasons. F1 dodged a bullet on a few occasions that afternoon.

I guess that's one of the reasons why I was scared watching F1 for the first time in long time when Vettel spun going up the hill in 2016. Especially when I saw him trying to re-join just as spray from another car appeared. Then Raikkonen's crash on the restart.

Either merc are really sand bagging or it's a bit of a dog. I think they are in trouble personally.

They are not sandbagging at all.

Same as many teams i would say, they have not done any true performance runs yet.

No way we can tell relatively who is fast, and who is not, untill first qualifying.

If I answered yesterday I would have agreed, but they looked very decent so far today, and Brundle saying Russell could carry more speed through a corner (turn 4 or the final one?) than the others.

Someone was comparing Russell's race stint to a similar one by Alpine at the same time (fuel and PU modes unknown of course) and said Russell was 1.5-2 seconds quicker per lap, which sounds pretty scary, as the Alpine looks decent on track, though not quick.

Edit: Though saying that others are disagreeing with his statement, so who knows.

I'd weigh heavily on the sand bagging side. I'm sure RB and Mercedes are heavily.

Teams don't really sandbag. They may not do low fuel quali glory runs that allow us to easily compare their pace, but they are not going to deliberately run below pace. They need accurate information, especially with the porpoising issues being speed dependent. Actually, come to think of it, those issue probably will mean that we will see full speed quali runs from the teams to ensure their car works in these extreme setups.

They only need one or two sectors at full pace to know exactly how the setups work.
No need for a full flat out lap.

The most they could sandbag (be off the pace) and still be 'on it' (so to speak) is about 4-5 seconds according to what I heard on the commentary. i.e. full fuel load and engine turned down, but driver still pushing.

It doesn't look like that is the case though, they are just methodically going through their program.

Not looking good for Dani Ric is it? He needs as much testing as possible, but is missing out. Even a full day tomorrow won't make up for it.

Really nice video on how those new Mercedes sidepods are legal, and how they (probably) function:

I hadn't heard of this guy before this season, but he's putting out some really great technical content right now.

Anyone else noticed Lando seems to be really struggling with this years car? He has been missing A LOT of corners and suffering from a lot of understeer. I wanted Danny back today to see if its just Norris or the car thats the struggle.

EDIT: That may explain it, I've been watching on mute a lot and just heard them talking about the brakes being an issue and assumingt hats what they were investigating yesterday.
