F1 Testing 2010

It's certainly not going to be easy for them. I just want Lotus to beat Virgin. :D
I reckon the new teams will do well to be finishing 50% of the races *or take part in 50% in one teams case...*

Aiming for points isn't realistic unless it's exceptional circumstances - like Australia 2002 or Brazil 2003

Why is that Mercedes so slow?

It will take a few years for the Mercedes team to be built. Brawn was lucky the car was built with a huge team and budget. Large cutbacks made many members redundant. They were fortunate that no testing in 09 slowed down how fast the big players could come back at them because Brawn did next to nothing to the car over the season. Hondas money had dried up.

It will take a while to replace talent they lost and start getting mercedes money.

I guess thats why MS signed a 3 year deal. To be part of that building.

As for Buttons pace in testing, it means little in comparison to lewis on different days. I doubt lewis is losing any sleep over it. I've always admired Jensons pace but he's far far better than I could imagine if he gets within 3/4s of the points Hamilton will score this year.

For the naive chaps who don't believe that sandbagging occurs...

The Spaniard also hinted that Ferrari have yet to show their true pace on low fuel loads, something he reckons both Red Bull and McLaren have already done. "Red Bull, McLaren and Renault have been very quick and they have shown their cards, while we are still hiding ours," he [Alonso] said.

Straight from the lips of FA.

Then he also says...

"Maybe where Ferrari needs to improve is in the short runs with little fuel onboard. That's where the Red Bull and the McLaren have been quicker, and they will be the reference to try and improve the F10 in the next test in Barcelona."

How does he know the ferrari needs to improve in these areas if they haven't shown their hands?

More Teflonso BS.

We just have to wait and see the performance of the leading cars in the first race of the season and compare it to their pre-season testing form.

In the past, the pre-season performance and the performance of the cars in the first few races was in-sync. Perhaps someone could tell me the last time a team was ordinary in pre-season and then blew everyone away at the start of the season?

With regards to Alonso...I think he is BS'ing. What I will say though, is that in every test in 2010, Ferrari have been consistently fast and must consider themselves to have, at this point, the best F1 car.

The big surprise for me has to be the RedBull car. They took a big step forward last year, but I believed this was not because they were fast, but because Ferrari, McLaren and Renault had produced lemons (no offence CSl). I also felt that in 2010, RedBull would go back to where they previously were - in the midfield. However, in this week's test, when Webber and Vettel both posted the fastest times of their test days, RedBull could well become a front-running team who consistently vye for the leading positions.

I think its still a little early to say what the current order is, mainly because so many of the test days have been spoilt due to bad weather, but the final test should give us a good insight into where the teams are, in relation to eachother.

From James Allen:

He’s being a little disingenuous here as the Ferrari looks pretty impressive on the first lap, it’s just that they haven’t been doing short low-fuel runs.

lol @ all the Alonso hatred - learn to show a little respect to the double world champ who beat MS (twice).

Imho ferrari will be lucky to get a podium this year.

Right, so the chap who is widely regarded as the best driver in the field, paired with the car which has been universally acknowledged as the quickest and most reliable (so far), aren't going to get on the podium...

Keep up the good work Nostradamus ;)

Can't say I'm surprised. They have one of the best aerodynamic designers in F1 with Adrian Newey, a big league budget (if still a way behind McLaren/Ferrari) and two drivers with real quality.

I used to rate Newey very highly while he was at Williams and then at McLaren. But after that, to me, he seemed to have lost his way as the best designer. I also heard from someone on this forum that he spends a lot of his time involved with his hobby of boating. Ever since his last championship winning car (which I believe was over 10 years ago), I don't hold him in as high a regard as I used to.

I do hold Vettel in high regard, but Webber is a good No.2 driver at best. He is decent, but then so are many other drivers.

Given the above, I am still surprised that they seem to be doing a good job and look to sustain their good performance of 2009, into 2010.

It would appear that way. Though IMO the best car he produced (relative to the opposition) was the Williams of 1992 and 1993 and if memory serves me correct, there was no big regulation change during those years.

Though IMO the best car he produced (relative to the opposition) was the Williams of 1992 and 1993

I've said this on here before, but it bears repeating.

The Williams FW14 and FW14B cars won 17 from 36 races ('91 and '92 seasons), a 47.2% success rate. The FW18 from 1996 won 12 from 18, a 66.67% strike rate. So why is the FW14 series rated as a better design than the FW18?

I love the FW14B and the later 15C. I think they're exactly what F1 should be about - the absolute pinnacle of racing technology. But they were beaten many times from '91 to '93. The FW18 might not have the kudos of those earlier cars, but it was more successful.
