q3 is the only time you might really know

Might?

Are you suggesting that drivers will actually go slow in qualifying, on purpose?

If you are, in all my years of watching F1, I have never seen or heard of a driver holding back in qualifying. Basically, an F1 driver's nature is such that he will attempt to go as fast as he can, so that he can qualify as high up the field as possible, so as to do best in the race.

I honestly cannot recall a single occassion where it came to light where a driver went slow, on purpose, in qualifying.

Vettel, Hamilton, Senna, Mansell...to name a few, all drive eye-balls out in qualifying.
MSc was so determined to get pole in Monaco 2006, that on his final lap, he parked his vehicle across a corner so that nobody else could set a faster time than him.
THOSE are the lengths that some drivers will goto, just to do well in qualifying.

Sandbagging in qualifying...I think not.

might because a car may have technical or other random difficulties

of course it will be fairly obvious before then that every car is slower than the RB, anyway.

I think I may have contradicted myself there.

calm down dear!!

Hehehe. okay okay.

I think that we shall get a good indication of the true speed of the cars, in the final day of qualifying where some drivers may choose to go for some glory runs and boost the morale of the entire team (never underestimate the importance of morale).

Don't you mean testing? I think all drivers go for a glory run when qualifying (except those who stay in the pits saving tyres).
