F1 Testing 2012 - Week 2, Barcelona

supose its better than something like this maybe happening

Ouch...

Who was driving?

Sounds like an easy fix, do they have enough money for a private test, to claw back some time.

If it was an easy fix, they'd do it at the track. Not pack everything back up and send it all home.

someo rich idiot who bought a ferrari and probably welded the ends backtogether :D

Broke at a bulkhead, possibly modified to fit him in as he's a tall chap.

More worryingly, it was a low speed impact that did that.

Seems so...

There’s a lot of speculation about exactly what happened to this 1999-spec Ferrari F399. What is known is that it was driven by Dutchman Federico Kroymans in a demonstration event at Laguna Seca in California five years ago. He crashed at turn six and went into the barriers at around 66mph (106kph).

Any F1 fan who’s seen the picture will be astonished by how a comparatively low-speed impact did such serious damage to a relatively recent car.

Did the car have some pre-existing damage to the chassis that was not repaired? There was speculation that the chassis might be the same one Michael Schumacher crashed at Silverstone in 1999, breaking his leg.

But this seems unlikely. There is another suggestion that Kroymans made modifications to the car himself in order to accommodate his tall frame (which is clearly evident in this picture). This could have weakened the car’s ability to withstand impacts.

Bensons blog posts for some reason just seem really rubbish. Never really insightful, never a scoop just news for the sake of news.
I think it's part of the BBC style guide, the way most of their sports articles read - very few quotes, nothing new to learn, anything remotely resembling an opinion must be immediately balanced by considering the alternate view. Just state the well-known facts and get out of there.

It's a shame that such a big, knowledgeable organisation is so poor at writing interesting pieces.

McLaren had good long run pace last year. It means nothing if Vettel is already 20 seconds up the road...

Mclaren couldn't do any real representative long runs last year as the exhaust system only lasted a few laps at a time, for the most part they only did half the mileage of the other top teams because of the eventually aborted exhaust idea.

I think in the one test day they only managed 36 laps with several exhaust swaps.

Talking of speed, are there any speed trap times out there, wondering if the speeds are being affected with the wing and exhaust changes?

It would also be good to see who's fastest in a straight line.

i'd put money on mercedes it worked well for them last year.

arent the teams only allowed to bring specific gear combinations to the circuits now though? instead of a wide range? i remember some gear rule beeing implemented
