F1 Testing 2012 - Week 2, Barcelona

Gear rule is for 2014. Fixed ratio's all season.

Current rules are maximum of 30 ratio's available all season, all of which must be defined and declared to the FIA prior to the first event. As far as I know, this is the same as last year.

Do you know why this is (surely it cant be down to costs, would it be that expensive to have different ratio options?)

Mercedes seem to have a very steady program to go through.

We won't see any qualifying runs until that last test. That's what seemed to happen last year with Ferrari and Redbull.

That 2011 Marussia is just pathetic.

As much as we love to believe that these times do not mean anything, there is an article on Autosport (available for subscribers) on 'F1's top 10 pre-season testing shocks' and it quite clearly demonstrates, every time a team has had a fast car they have shown the pace in testing. This is what it says about the Brawn in testing:

Then Rubens Barrichello took to the track, and was immediately quick. Smirked references to 'glory runs' ended when nobody was able to get near him for the rest of the day. By the following evening, reality was dawning upon the rest of the paddock.

"I think we're *******," one rival driver confided. He was right.

So who has been immeadiately quick this year and in previous years?

Red Bull this year? That's about it. Maybe Force India.

Last year, the Ferrari and Redbull were quick - yet is was an awful season for Ferrari.

they dont mean anything unless you know fuel loads , ballast , engine settings.

obviously the teams know their own ultimate pace but they dont know anyone elses and very few teams are willing to show what it is.

without refueling single lap pace isnt really importaint anymore anyway

I think they are all willing to show some pace if they have it!

When was the last time a team turned up from having terrible speed in testing and won races throughout the season. We all know the McLaren woes last season but that was reliability related, not speed related.

Nope, no idea. Haven't really seen any information on it at all. It just kinda appeared in the regulations, all the teams went "yep, means we wont be using 8th gear in Monaco" (2014 spec gearboxes have 8 forward gears) and that was that . No explanation or anything.

I agree any cost reduction is negligible in the big picture. It might be an attempt by the FIA to go towards a single standard gearbox, or at least equalise customer gearboxes from each manufacturer across the teams? But that said, the ratio fix is per driver, not per gearbox manufacturer, so that doesn't work either.

In all honestly, no idea. Suggestions on a postcard? :D

oops lol FIXED
ill do a better one if i notice someone has taken photos of all the cars at the same angle/peice of track like they did last year

the mclarens sidepods seem really high and bulky compared to the others?

btw duke can you please add http://f1tests.co.cc/2012.php?rev=on to the list of places to view testing times , on that one if you scroll down you can see every individual lap time they did

Remember that the top of the McLaren chassis is much lower than the other teams (hence no stepped nose). The radiator size isn't going to vary massively between the teams so the top of the side pods is relatively constant.

it would be interesting to find out - I havent seen any reference to this either

I thought it was bad enough to have a standard ECU to be used by all teams (admittedly rather small/insignificant part none the less) - but to have standard gear boxes (which has been mentioned , but hopefully not agreed upon) and ratios etc, at some point it sounds like the whole car will become one standard (like Nascar) which will be a real pity

I guess the one thing I should be thankful about that Ferrari has so much sway with BE is that obviously/hopefully the above could never happen to keep their interest in being on the grid every season

Good to see Lewis/McLaren getting the laps done today, plenty of race simulation data, must be reasonably happy with the car.
