F1 Testing 2014: Week 1 Jerez

So, verdict on the V6s so far? I know there aren't too many clips around yet and a lot of them aren't flat-out, but so far I kinda like the sound. Not as pleasing as the V10s, but as the V8s did very little for me I'm hoping these will sound better. :)

Yes, no doubt Ted would have spotted something in that area that's worth sharing in his notebook later tonight.

Does the floor have to be that wide? Is it a regulation?

I don't think it has too be. One of the teams (McLaren maybe?) took a big cut-out from the floor ahead of the rear wheels a few years back, but quickly replaced it.

I think the floor on most cars is at the maximum width, as the benefit is in having a large, wide, flat floor that aligns with the diffuser.

The only major regulations about the floor are that it cant have a hole, and that no part of the car should be visible if viewed from directly underneath, i.e. they can't hand the sidepods out over the edge of the floor tray.

Quick comparison of W04 and W05 (both from testing) - https://www.dropbox.com/s/xuws2u76xs9elgt/engines.wav

If comparing the V8's and V6's in terms of sound (technically i think the new V6's are brilliant), then i still prefer the V8's; the turbo's just sound dull in comparison :(

The Caterham solution is significantly more clever than it initially looks. Maximum air under the car with minimum interference. I'm not entirely sure, but I think there's something going on around the tea tray, it's been a bit dark in photos so far.

I'm not sure which is uglier, Force India or Ferrari? Both dismal.

Mercedes are the winner in the looks department so far. Not so much in the reliability department. Although Renault seem to be having a bad time. Apparently the engine is produce more vibration that expected and one team had difficulty installing the engine... Errrrrr.... What?

How can you talk about reliability, when the mercs have done more laps than anyone else and at a significantly (or at least the last tome I saw any laptimes) faster pace. Everyone so behind.

18 laps, not yet going flat out *apparently topping out at the moment at 10k rpm* and a front wing fell off.

Stellar reliability there.

I love Ted.

The cars under braking sound like the Audi LMP1 as the motor spins up to charge the battery.

Its.... new. Not sure I like it. No need for ear plugs is a shame for me. But the technology is fascinating.

Don't forget Teds notebook on Sky at 9pm.

This is what I dont get about Sky. They have a whole F1 channel and Ted has to say I'll do a really quick round up because I only have 2 minutes. No you don't. Just talk for an hour. They can drop the 20th repeat of the f1 show journo special that they've been running since december. I'd much rather listen to Ted giving a full insight on what's been going on and what the design details of these new cars are.

I thought exactly this whilst watching tonight. I feel sorry for the fans and Ted. You can tell that he wants to carry on talking and we all want to keep listening. I don't understand why he doesn't get half an hour instead of just 15 minutes. World's biggest broadcasting company n all?

I though the notebook was a bit crap to be honest. It wasnt up to previous quality. Or, that could be the way i feel because ive been glued to twitter and autosport live.

They spent a lot of time on the Merc launch which was a bit boring really as we already know what the car looks like, I think when he starts his technical analysis of the cars it will be better and obviously when there are more runs by more cars to show the footage of them too.

Having heard the sound I am going to miss the screaming whine of the V8s tbh, these engines and the energy recovery systems have a lower and more raspy sound but I do really like the new sound in it's own way, there's quite a few new textures and whirly/ whiney sounds coming through with the turbo and recovery systems which sound cool
