Fallout 4 to feature Nvidia Gameworks

I cannot fathom why people think you can't have both great gameplay and great graphics in AAA games.

Dragon Age Inquisition and Witcher 3 very much prove you can have a great game with very purty graphics. Are there more visually impressive games out there? Probably - not by a significant margin though. Imho Witcher 3 is easily GOTY and should set the standard for future games to be measured by. Well, Witcher 3 best Story/Lore with high graphics, but best gameplay goes to Rocket League which has "ok" graphics :p

I don't even think of it like that. You only have so much resources and time. I rather them put those in story and gameplay more than graphics with a game like Fallout 4. Sure we all want nice graphics, but I can't imagine it is easy or cheap to do it. End of the day they want to make profit and most people buying such game are not doing it for the graphics.
Yes, I'd much rather Bethesda put all their money into marketing pip boys, loot crates, mobile apps, live action trailers, and hiring celebrity voice overs than bother with cutting edge graphics...

Different departments....I doubt the game creators (the programmers) have much to do with pip boys, loot crates and the like.

You missed the point of Bethesda having enough money to throw in every direction, including the art department which has (almost) nothing to do with programming.

This is my personal view with regards to the graphics

Was Fallout 3 (and New Vegas) great?
Yep

Were the graphics good?
Not particularly - but they did the job and were about average for the era (2008/2010)

Does Fallout 4 look better?
Much better.

Will it play nicely at 4k on PC
Should do.

Am I more concerned about graphics or gameplay in the Fallout games?
Gameplay

Other people might answer these questions differently.

The graphics do need to be a certain level though to help with the immersion into the world. As the years go on and you play newer games with better graphics your expectations rise.

That is their marketing department and all those things even though you and I may not be interested, there is clearly a market for. Doubt it has any impact on what graphics the game was going to end up with.

Exactly. People make it sound like graphics are horrid. They are much better than fallout 3 and the graphics in that game did not stop me from having a blast with it.

Just because some of you guys set a subjective level of "good enough graphics", it's doesn't mean you or the other people in general, don't care about such "trivial" things. If graphics don't matter, than all would play a game at the minimum settings allowed by the game and for those that fps don't matter as well, you can limit it at 30fps. :)

But in the end "looks do matter", it's just subjective the level to which we find it acceptable. Some of us could say yay, some nay.

Of course looks do matter, don't think anyone here is claiming otherwise. Funny how people read what they want to and take it to extremes. Saying graphics are not as bad as people are making it out for a fallout type game is taken as we are happy with pong style graphics as long as gameplay is good. Lol.

I would love for it to have much better graphics, but not at the expense of gameplay or story. As it is the graphics I have seen will do fine. If they are offensive and unacceptable to some people, then just don't buy it.

You can have it only in two ways:

1. A subjective "good enough";
2. Graphics don't matter to me -> play it on the lowest settings, perhaps even PS1 era graphics. Put in a situation like this, I would say 99% of the players would fall into the 1st category "well, as long as they are good enough to me, it's ok".

There is no extreme in the above, just what people are saying. Criticizing the game for the visual part is a valid argument just as much as gameplay mechanics, sound (when, for God's sake, we gonna get some real love in this department?), story line, characters, etc.

Wouldn't it be nice though if people actually waited to see PC footage (in motion) on ultra settings before writing it off though?

Everyone is so quick to judge now. It was the same with the Star Wars: Battlefront beta - People were refusing to even download and test out the free open Beta because they had made their minds up based on a trailer!

Battlefront suffered the reverse problem. Great graphics, terrible gameplay - this is not a buy for me. Whereas I will be buying Fallout - says a lot about what's important in a game I think ;D

Judging by the uncompressed shots we have, it should be decent enough anyway. :)

PS: The game don't get a high quality love for the graphics is due to consoles. To look at some of Tedd's interviews over the years and you cannot at least smile a little bit on how he tries to sugarcoat the whole technical aspect of his games. :)

The way i see it is better than average graphics are a bonus in games that have good game play. Better than average graphics can't paper over the cracks if a game has rubbish game play. This is why i still play a lot of console only games as a lot of them over the years have the game play needed to be enjoyable and the graphics are good enough.
