Fallout: New Vegas

Whenever I can't get a save to load I can usually fix it by loading a save that does load first... (doesn't need to be from the same playthrough)... Basically once *something* has loaded you should be able to load the problematic savegame from the in-game menu

Thanks, loading my old game worked.

Now good to work out what I was doing haven't played for a few days and forgot what the heck I was in the middle off.

So my modding adventure continues... I'm struggling a bit to understand how BOSS and FNVEdit are supposed to work to help my with my load order, BOSS tells me I need to "clean" some of the .esm/.esps using FNVEdit but I'm not sure quite how to do it, and BOSS seems to only recognise about half of my mods... If anyone out there can break down what I'm supposed to do that would be really helpful.

I also tried to get the ENB shaders working but I followed the instructions and have run into a few problems, mostly I think because the 4GB fixer duplicates FalloutNV.exe (with the LAA flag set) to a subfolder where it runs it from, and therefor the d3d9.dll file which the ENB shader is supposed to load doesn't work. I read some reports that backing up the original FalloutNVLauncher.exe and then renaming the 4GB exe to it's location would fix things, but this refuses to load. I also tried setting "-extra dll d3d9.dll" as an argument to the 4GB launcher, which seems to work (and in the log for the 4GB launcher it confirms loading d3d9.dll) but I get no difference in-game (I tried pressing the hotkey to activate it but nothing happens). Also if I try to launch using the non 4GB launcher with the d3d9.dll in the directory it just instantly crashes (this may be because I have a lot of mods loaded and these need the 4GB version to work). Anyone had any experience with this?

Hi Rufus, i would recommend watching Gophers How to Mod New Vegas Videos, here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-3c1a9cLL8&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PL0E5E8CA384409B11, he also has videos on how to Use Boss and TES5edit. Well worth your time to watch them :)

Those are the very videos I've been watching, but I'm not sure I get quite the same results as him... perhaps I didn't pay enough attention to the one about BOSS (I'll rewatch)... The ENB one following his method doesn't work at all because the version of the ENB shaders has moved on, and he wasn't using the 4Gb launcher, so I'm not sure how to get those working still

Am I the only one who plays these games totally unmodded? Whats wrong with the vanilla experience? :p

This is my first experience modding one of these games and it seems kinda fun... I did already play a lot of the Vanilla game once through so it helps to freshen things up a bit... and also a lot of the mods are fixes of things which didn't work properly, or re-introducing content which was taken away by the developers due to limitations (mostly of the consoles). For instance I installed some mods last night which remove the barriers of junk which criss-cross the main strip in New Vegas - the developer had originally intended the centre of NV to be a large sprawling and impressive area, but then they found the consoles couldn't take that so they stuck in a bunch of walls to split the area into more manageable chunks... Another great mod "Populated Casinos" adds a lot more NPCs to the casinos (so it isn't just one guy at a slot machine in the corner)

Nothing, but I like the mods that don't really alter the gameplay, but just enhance the experience, then it's a lot more fun to play!

I agree, although I've found as I started to apply those mods I couldn't help but take on a few which do add a little more to the game :p

96 hours into my playthrough so far. Main story is virtually at the end, only holding off on that cause I know finisishing it ends the game. Finished Dead Money and Old World Blues. Doing Lonesome Road now.

God I love this game :D

Getting crashes about every 5-15 minutes and I'm not sure if it's a mod issue or a more general game stability issue.

Any chance someone can tell at a glance from my active mods what might be the most likely culprit?

Have the 4GB NVSE which I use as a launcher outside of NMM, if that's relevant.

Hmm, thought I had ran Boss but evidently not as that just threw NVEC and NSkies below the other esm's. Will give that a blast and see if it fixes it. I don't think that was the problem though as that order was a result of a reinstall, before which the crashes were still happening.

Hi mate, that load order dont look right, use Boss as i am sure it should be master files and dlc first then mods after

I'm still struggling to understand why BOSS isn't doing anything for me... it lists some of my active mods, but not all of them, and it doesn't re-order anything even though I believe I've told it to... I don't think it's a case of some of my mods just not being common enough to be on the master list, for instance I have WMX with it's compatibility patches, and BOSS doesn't list them...

BOSS also kindly points out that I have "Dirty edits" in the various stock DLC .esm files, and instructed me to use FNVEdit to clean them... I tried cleaning the Dead Money .esm following the guide BOSS suggested to the letter, but when I re-run boss it still says it needs cleaning... Anyone have any clue what might be the problem?

BOSS does not recognize all esps. You will have to sort them yourself.

As for FNVedit, I would not clean the official dlcs personally, but might with some others if they require it, though tbh, you could probably just leave them.

PS. just looking at your load order in the pic you posted, FalloutNV.esm and all official dlcs should come before everything else at all times!

I get that BOSS doesn't know about all of them, but I'm sure I've seen in some of Gopher's videos he runs BOSS and it definitely recognises WMX, and yet when I use it it doesn't list that one (and several other very common mods)... When cleaning DeadMoney made no difference I reverted back to the backed up version - it doesn't seem to be causing me any problems but I can't be sure (actually I wondered if maybe BOSS wasn't listing all my mods was something to do with picking up too many errors in the ones it did scan, or something like that)

I think that load order posted above was from someone else, not me :p

I honestly wouldn't bother about cleaning mods tbh...cleaning is overrated imo(and I don't clean DLCs anyway). What I would do however, is create a merged patch using FNVedit, or a bashed patch using Wrye Bash(this will totally redo the levelled lists, so that weapons/armours from mods are distributed evenly etc, and will greatly improve compatibility of mods). Wrye bash comes with an easy to follow guide if you need it.

Ah, so I see, my apologies:)

No worries :D

I've got the hang of making a merge patch with FNVEdit once all my mods are loaded in how I want them, but not really seen or used Wrye Bash, would you say it's worth getting? I've got quite a lot of mods active (perhaps not quite as many as some but a decent amount)... Do you have any idea how to get ENB shaders to work with the 4Gb loader? I've tried various methods and nothing seems to work for me

A bashed patch and merged patch are pretty similar tbh, though a bashed patch is better imo. Wrye bash also works well with BOSS, and is just handy to use. You will have to install all the wrye Python stuff as well if you do use it. I would definitely use one or the other though.

I would download Wrye Bash, run BOSS through that, then organize the rest by hand and create a bashed patch.

As for ENB, try downloading Enhanced ENB shaders, and in the download folders there is an alternate 4gb launcher, which I don't seem to be able to find anywhere else for some reason.
