Fallout: New Vegas

Anyone else having issues with the game after the patch has been applied?

Mine crashes at the 2nd loading screen (Bethesda) :(

I've noticed a LOT more crashes since the last patch, although to be fair it could well be my system.
yep, before the patch not 1 problem, i had the stuttering problem but with the modified DLL it wasn't a real problem, now i have had about 10 CTDs it's the same as what happerend with f3 yes there were bugs but it was for the most part stable then the patch's started and each one casued problems

Well ive completed the game in 15 hours and throughly enjoyed it. The last battle against Casers was quite hard. Doubt ill play through it again.
dude you've missed so much rushing through the main missions there is many many more hours worth of game play to this game, if you enjoyed the 15 hours you have already played try having another go but this time do the side quests and have a bit of an explore also have a look at a few mods while your at it they also add so much to this game

In terms of story it depends allot on what you have already done. You "supposedly" spend the next few hours after dealing with Benny (depending on what you do with him) running about gaining rep with different factions, however if you've already done this then you will have a few hours less before the end.

Yeah - in games like this I don't really think it is possible to say "you've got x hrs of gameplay left" at any given stage because everyone will play the game differently in terms of what quests they do and when.

My guess is if somebody has done 60hrs before entering the Strip then likely they are the type of player who is fairly meticulous, doing a lot of exploring, tackling every quest/mini-quest they stumble across, so if they keep playing the same way I'd guess there's a lot of game left.

Oh some general thoughts I had about character builds in terms of skill/special/perk allocations etc, would be interesting to hear what people think (much of this applies to FO3 as well). I've been playing on Normal difficulty until I raised to Hard quite recently so obviously if playing hardcore mode or whatever some of this may be a bit wide of the mark. Sadly I've only come to realise some of this (like the need to boost Int early) halfway through the game!

The key thing to bear in mind is that there is a level cap. This means that ideally you want to be optimising how your character will turn out at level 30. The implications of this are:

-Intelligence should be raised high early in the game to gain maximum benefit from the additional skill points you gain when leveling up.
-Toughness needs to be fairly high as this dictates how many implants you can have. Effectively a point in Toughness is 'free' because you can then buy an implant to raise a different SPECIAL stat as well.
-Perception doesn't seem overly useful since I've encountered very few conversation lines where I need to pass a check against it, few enough that you could temporarily buff the stat with Mentats or whatever. Spotting enemies on your radar isn't all that useful and you can get a companion to help with that anyway.
-The perks that give an extra 10% XP or grant an immediate level up are a complete waste because once you hit the level cap you'll effectively be down a couple of perks compared to if you hadn't taken them
-Generally speaking the better perks seem to be ones that give some kind of unique benefit that you can't get elsewhere rather than simply raising some skills that you can probably buff with chems/magazines etc when needed.
-There seem to be very few ways of giving significant buffs to Lockpicking which means that it is important to invest skill points there. Ideally you want to round it off (including any boosts you may get e.g. utility suit) in multiples of 25(?) as this seems to dictate whether you can attempt to pick a lock of a given strength. IMO boosting Lockpick is important because otherwise it is impossible to open some doors - it's not like say a weapon skill where having a low score just makes combat more difficult but still possible, it's kind of a black and white thing. Although the same applies to Science (for hacking), it is much easier to buff that skill.
-In general rounding off skills seems advisable as most of the checks (and Perk requirements) fall on neat boundaries (multiples of 5).

Perception is pretty poor in my opinion, although have a look at the perk requirements.

My character is based around lots of critical hits primarily with energy weapons, better criticals (+50% dmg) requires 6 perception for example.

I would agree with you on Endurance because of the implants, I took an endurance of 8 - boosted all other SPECIAL skills (not endurance) by 1, and got the other 2 implants as well.

Not a bad list at all. Having just completed the game for a second time (the second time on Hardcore), I feel qualified to add my opinions:

Most important skills: Lockpick, Speech and <insert weapon type here>. In that order too, I'd suggest.
Best weapon skill: Guns
Most important stat: Intelligence
Favourite companions: Boone and ED-E (although both died when I was playing my second run through, ended up with Rex and Cass)

Some little tips (and possible spoilers):

Once you have 100 lockpick, get the Gobi Campaign Sniper Rifle from the Sniper's Nest - far and away my favourite weapon.
Once you have plenty RadX, get into Vault 34, right to the very bottom and get The All-American - it's a pain to get, but it's amazing.
Once you get the Plasma Caster (or if you get it), give it to Cass - she's a monster with it :D
If you are using the Sniper Rifle on Hardcore, beware Boone running straight in front of you and taking a headshot - for his stupidity, I refused to reload and got a new companion :D
Get the Wild Wasteland Perk at the start - there isn't a lot of whacky events, but the Alien Captain drops easily the best gun in the game - one-shotting Deathclaws is handy if you ever go inside Deathclaw Cave *shivers* (and it would even top the GCSR if it was possible to get ammo for it!)

SPOILER

How the hell do you kill the kill the guy near the end, is it Legato or something like that? I am shooting at him with everything I have whilst running backwards in typical Fall Out combat fashion which enfuriates me and all he does is hit me once or twice and i'm dead

you have to avoid the conversation with him, go back to the entrance of the fort, take out a silenced sniper rifle and use some steady and a stealth boy and then take a couple shots at his head.

or up your speech to 100 and talk him out of the fight or up your explosives to 100 and shoot a lot of HE rounds from a grenade machine gun at him while having Power armour on and using Med-X and Psycho

If you buy the game on DVD, do you need the DVD in the drive to play each time?

Also, if you buy the Steam version, is it just as easy to install/uninstall patches, muck around with .ini files etc. as a normal PC game?

Thanks :)

I just used ballistic fist and killed him in 3 or 4 hits

Hi, I bought it on DVD and do not have the disk in my drive, it gets all the info it needs from Steam. Also the patch just downloaded and installed no hassle at all. I like it like this.

I struggled with him too until I read about the ballistic fists. He basically goes down in 2-3 hits then. Shame the game ends not long after that as I'd love to walk around wearing his helmet :D

I always build my character around charisma/intelligence instead of the combat aspects. Opens up so many doors (literally) when you can hack/speech check everything.

if you buy it on DVD it still uses steam DRM so you don't need the disc in to play

patches are installed automatically so I don't think you can uninstall them and yeah you can mod files as you wish, the great thing with steam being that if you mess them up to the point of not working you can download the original file

Okay, so how do I use weapon upgrades (extended barrel, extended mag etc)?

I've bought an extended magazine for a 10mm pistol, for example, but I can't get it to apply to my 10mm pistol... They don't do anything when they're sat in my inventory, and I can't use them in the same way as repair kits.

In the inventory screen (where it says repair/maintain) it says x)mods
Press X to view the available mods for that weapon, click on them to apply

It is crazy how open this game is in its quest structure. You really can work for anyone/doublecross anyone/work for yourself. True Fallout game - Fallout 3 was a joke compared to this (and I loved Fallout 3).

Designing this game and debugging it must have been utter nightmare.

debugging they still have lots to do.
Patch 1.2 has brought in many many issues for the folks who didn't have them before.
Unfortunately with 44hours clocked now, I cannot remain in game for more than 2 minutes without a CTD.

I have tried alternative saves, but may well have to keep going back until i find one that is stable to work forward from, and attempt to avoid the Ultralux casino, as it appears to be the source of some of the evils.

Disappointing, as until then it was running so smoothly for me, a CTD maybe every 10 hours or more.

SPOILER WARNING

I am at the start of the battle between the NCR and the Legion. I think I made a mistake at the beginning, when one of the (forgotten his name) Ranger's asks me if I am ready (I said yes). Turns out that I keep getting killed plus not enough stimpacks in my inventory etc. Where ever I turn the Legion seems to be everywhere.

Am I shafted? :D

If it's too late then I guess that's where my character's jouney ends. Now there's realism for you. ;)

Also, put a lot of points into endurance so that you can buy all of the implants later on. I have downloaded a mod to raise the cap as I hate the level 30 cap in vanilla.
