Fallout: New Vegas

I've finished a play through last week and i'm a little disappointed with the perks ..... Most of them seem to be quite useless compared to older Fallout games. I took Wild Wasteland straightaway and only found about 4 or 5 "????" things and it feels like a wasted perk :(

I have had 3 random events so far - 2 occasions where I got chased around and beaten to within an inch of my life by 3 very tough Grannies and their rolling pins, one of gigantic rats when I went to a Caravan crash cavern and the other when I was around the main Legion encampment, but before I took the boat to where Caesar is.

I probably won't take it when I play a new Character though.

*Spoilers*

Be careful with killing the Van Graffs, if you do that you lose the ability to resolve Cass's companion quest the "good" way, this means you can't take cass in if you are on the quest to bring her to the Van Graffs unless you want one side dead.

You have to chose to fail one quest or the other, there are 3 choices essentially, take Cass in and let them kill her, take cass in, resist their decision and kill them (no small task) this then means you have to finish Cass' quest by killing the Caravan woman, alternatively don't take Cass in and complete her companion quest the "good" way.

One thing I'm not sure of is whether or not you can complete Cass's quest the good way, i.e gathering evidence and THEN take her in to the Van Graffs, might try it on a future play though.

Interesting - I have completed the 'Good' Way for Cass, just trying a few other options at the moment, as she is really good with a Gun!

Well I think I might have had it now. Got to the mission where you have to protect President Kimball but no matter what I do he gets his head blown off and I fail the quest. If I shoot the person I *think* is responsible before the assasination then all the NCR turn hostile. If I try and get up on the podium to pick their pockets and take the weapons the NCR terminate me with extreme prejudice. Have I foobared my main campaign or can I go back to Mr House and pick up the next mission?

You have to know where to go. There is a sniper on top of the tower behind the stage - go speak to him. Later on a guy rushes onto the stage who you also need to kill.

To add to what captainrave said:

When you take out the sniper on the top of the tower and you then afterwards run down and take out the guy that runs onto the stage. It's pretty obvious when it happens and you stand around for ages so should be fine.

There are some other stuff that happens too if you forgot to do some things but I'll let you figure them out ;)

As post above says there are two threats on his life:
1) In the tower directly behind the president there is an NCR sniper, part way through the speech someone come up behind him, pushes him off the tower and shoots the president. Solution? Shoot the second guy as soon as he turns up, i just zoomed in, not in vats and took a couple of head shots.

2) One of the engineers in the crowd has a remote detonator in their pocket (its the one that never claps at the president's comments). I just stealthed and pickpocketed it from him, he then just runs towards the president with a knife.

You can also radio the Officer guy that there was a sniper there (from the top of the tower). He will then sweep the area again and evacuate the president. So it isn't needed to find the detonator if it's bugged or you are finding it tricky to pickpocket without getting caught. I know some people have had problems with it on other forums.

First time it happened to me I got ****ed off after standing there for ages listening to the speech and killing the knife guy :(

You can install NMC's texture pack for fallout 3 if you like, you need to use an installation script tho, its all on fallout nexus and vegas nexus.

Another alternative if you had high enough speech skill to ask for full access while you was still inside the building is to go to the landing pad and with sufficient skill you can disarm the bomb.

Bah, come across a game stopper of a bug!
In the dam, there is a button that starts up the turbines, DO NOT! press this unless its part of your particular quest!!
The quest doesn't detect that the switch has already been activated and your unable throw the switch again.
Thats a few hours lost......

Is it me, or are energy weapons pretty ineffective in this game compared to Fallout3?

In Fallout 3 the plasma rifle was the pimp-daddy of weapons, but in this it seems pretty useless... The gauss rifle is decent, but again not as effective as sniper / anti-materiel rifle - plus it uses 5 MF cells with each shot!

I got my energy weapons skill up to around 75, in the expectation that I would be able to use game-changing weapons, but now I feel a bit like I've just wasted the XP... Guns for victory.

try getting the YCS/186 or alien blaster (in the same place, but it's one or the other) might change your mind

Thanks to all for advice on the Kimball mission - managed to get past it.

Re post above re energy weapons, I would tend to agree, certainly better with manual aim than VATS which seems to go for most other weapons in the game too.

Really getting into this - accidently last 4hrs to this last night. Popped into the Crimson Caravan but was too built up, so headed back to Novac. Did everything I could find 'in town' and then decided to head south (as storyline seems to want to head north), stumbling on a lake - nice view. Great area for taking out Legion (who now hate me something cronic - lol), however the Novac people idolize me. And figured out that hollow triangles on the compass are places I haven't found yet - lol.

Still running around with the vamoint rifle and 10mm pistol, but are there many sniper rifles around? Have found a locked box at a vantage point over looking coral cove (requiring 100 lock-pick to open) and can only assume there might be one in there...

Is the motel room in novac yours forever?

Really enjoying this now.
