Feel like I'm missing out on some low end *Solved with XXLS400*

Good small sealed subs are expensive.

Also typically small subs are rubbish either because small driver and/or if ported high freq port tune

37hz frequency response is poor for e9f. My main speakers go lower than that.

Try to maintain a sense of perspective.

The task here is to help a noob pick their way through a minefield of options so they can make a "best in category" purchasing choice.

Sitting on the sidelines commenting "that sub isn't as good as main speakers" without including that they're pretty hefty floorstanders with 8 mid/woofers between them and an original RRP of £3,500, it really isn't that constructive. This isn't a willy waving contest.

Yes, yes... I know you didn't pay £3,500 for them because you bought them used. That's not the point though. You're not making valid comparisons.

I think I like the look at the 10" BK sub if I can get it a bit cheaper . I'd also use it for movies

@willhub, I'm not going to tell you to.ignore @hornetstinger's advice. That would be rude. Just bear in mind that what he is using would be classed as very high-end for most people's budgets, and so take his comments with a pinch of salt.

Perhaps if you have a nice lottery win and feel ready to drop £30,000-£50,000* on a kick-ass system then he'll be your man. Until then, a few of us here can offer suggestions with our feet firmly planted on the ground.

* @hornetstinger is going to reply now that his system didn't cost anything like that. Sure, but he'll be forgetting that he bought his £8,000 AV processor and his £6,000 power amps and his £3,500 front speakers plus centre, surrounds, sub, sources, displays etc used. Its frightening how quickly the RRPs add up when purchasing used gear.

You don't need to spend thousands to get floorstanders that much 37hz.

37hz is quite poor bass response for a sub.

Don't expect 120sb @ 15hz with low the for £150 however aaub should go low enough and lower than typical floorstander speakers.

Also it is cheaper to get a ported sub able to play louder and deeper than a small sealed sub. For one thing need a bigger driver and more powerful amp on the sealed sub for similar performance of a ported. Ported gives you about 3db higher output compared to sealed sub. There are differences on how it works lower down ie on and lower than port tune, and how a sealed sub is below certain frequency. Ported drops off quickly below port tune, sealed slowly drops off

I'd say the £250 price is about right for what it is. The original launch price of £400-£450 was hopelessly overoptimistic.

The 10" paper driver miain plus the same cone in the ABR passive unit aren't anything special. It's a basic MDF box with vinyl wrap finish. The weight is on the light side for a twin cone 10" sub. There's also a question mark over whether CA's 500W power claim is entirely legitimate. That said, it does appear to go a bit deeper than similarly-priced 10" subs if the specs are to be believed.

I noticed a review it said it bottomed out quite easily, I don't want to bottom it out, if I'm used to playing a Logitech Z5500 with music quite loud could I find this bottoms out way before the Z5500 would ?

I'm not comparing quality here I know the Cambridge audio will be much better quality. And I don't want to thrash it as I live in a flat. Just don't want a wet flannel of a sub if that makes sense !

BK XXLS400 around £250 used.

I'd love an XXLS400 but it's more like 300-400 used from what I can see!

I'd like to spend 250 max to be honest, I've always wanted a BK Monolith, but I think it'd be a bit too big at the size of a small fridge and also excessive for a small flat.
