Fifa officials including vice president Jeffrey Webb arrested, Blatter getting it at last.

Look at where they are all from, hardly surprising really.

"Edit" Who honestly wants a world cup in Russia or Qatar (aside from people who are after bribes)? I was really annoyed when it wasn't awarded to us, NO ONE can do it better than we would.

Please. Loads of people can do it better than we can. It's just even we can do it a hell of a lot better than Qatar or Russia obviously can.

About time something is being done, we've heard of allegations against Fifa for years with nothing coming from them.

Funny it is though that the Americans are the ones to put the boot into corrupt Fifa as opposed to the Europeans..

I do wonder what happens with UEFA though, will we see them withdrawing from Fifa?

Anybody else suspicious at the timing of this? The day before elections...?

Something smells fishy, and I'm not talking about the contents of Baldrick's apple crumble!

Funny it is though that the Americans are the ones to put the boot into corrupt Fifa as opposed to the Europeans.

it's partly that they have the legislative tools and political reach to actually see it through, which few other countries do, and partly that America doesn't really give a **** about football, so potential FIFA sanctions mean much less to them than everyone else.

if a European country had tried this, they would run the risk of FIFA banning them from all international tournaments and continental club competitions for a million years as well as never hosting any kind of tournament ever again. in countries where football is almost a religion (ie most of Europe) this would be seriously politically and economically damaging and it's not surprising nobody wanted to step up and try them. in America the response would largely be "it's only soccer, who cares?"

as an aside, funny thing I read today about former General Secretary of CONCACAF, Chuck Blazer:

Blazer often worked from two apartments where he lived on the 49th floor in $18,000-per-month digs for himself and an adjoining $6,000 retreat largely for his unruly cats

corrupt FIFA supervillain seems like a really sweet gig if you can avoid extradition and arrest. $72,000 pa private residence for my cat? Nice

There is the Swiss investigation though.

yeah, that's why I added the "(from the USA at least)" bit - I'd love it if the Swiss investigation came up with something to charge him on. as happy as I am that all these lesser guys are getting taken down for literal decades of insanely blatant corruption, it'd still leave a sour taste if Blatter emerges unscathed at the end of the whole thing.

edit:

I do wonder what happens with UEFA though, will we see them withdrawing from Fifa?

we may be about to find out: https://twitter.com/AP/status/603615037656272896

I hope this actually does happen and some or all of these people see the inside of a prison cell.

I don't suppose it'll bring back all those who've died so far constructing stadiums in Qatar though.

Blatter is releasing a statement...

"This is a difficult time for football, the fans and for FIFA as an organisation."

"We will continue to work with the relevant authorities & we will work vigorously within FIFA in order to root out any misconduct"

Good news!

It is heart breaking that FIFA / Football was allowed to get in to such a sorry state to begin with.

Long overdue, and to be honest, since the F.B.I got involved it was really only a matter of time.

Whilst the individual muppets will get fined/jailed nothing will change in FIFA they will continue as ever and people will continue dancing to their tune.

Sad and pathetic, but true.
