Fifa officials including vice president Jeffrey Webb arrested, Blatter getting it at last.

This is such a joyous thing. I only hope Blatter can be brought done in the ensuing carnage.

Any chance they'll take the IOC to the cleaners next?

Blatter will get through this like he always does. The thing with him is whilst he has let the corruption in the sport happen he has always kept away from indulging in it himself. This means when anyone has challenged him he's always had some sort of dirt on them to keep himself in power. It also guarantees him the votes since officials know he'll let the corruption continue.

African football representative on news going on about Africa supporting Blatter and saying it over and over. He couldn't have sounded, or looked, more dodgy even if he had a sack full of Swiss Francs over his shoulder.

In a perfect world if everyone stopped watching then yeah but if you love football it's not quite as simple as "stop watching it"

I think Russia will go ahead but I'll be surprised if Qatar still host it in 2022.

Yeah it's arguably too close to change it for 2018 now, but I really hope Qatar don't get it. They clearly just throw money at people and hope for the best. Such a shady bunch.

It's not too late to change it England or Spain/Portugal could host it with less than a year's notice.

It's a strong possibility.

If not restricted to Europe, the USA also could host it on very short notice.

Unbelievable that this can continue in today's modern world. How something so big, so important can exist in such corruption from the top down. Who's ever heard of a "non-profit" $26bn industry!
They need to scrape everyone involved with FIFA, elect Prince Ali and get moving forwards, quickly!
What will happen, election Friday and that horrible old git will still be in charge :)

Not heard of religion before? Catholic Church, as big a non profit organisation as there can be, full of corruption, scandal, crime, cover ups and massive amounts of cash being raised. Scientology... perpetrated the single largest ever infiltration of the US government. Destroying massive amounts of information about anyone and anything connected to Scientology while you presume having access to a huge amount of what would effectively be information for blackmail.

There is a reason that a group that committed worse crimes against the USA than the KGB managed on a scale no one ever has or will manage again effectively got away with it without any comeback.

Fifa doesn't even rank as a large scale no profit organisation as for their influence, we're talking about putting on a tournament for football. Not starting wars, as far as corruption goes they are ridiculously small time in the world.

The only thing I find embarrassing is that people think it doesn't go on EVERYWHERE, all the time for every single similar organisation.

Something fundamentally ridiculous, ironic and frankly disturbing that the FBI is involved, the internal security service for America is getting involved in a completely foreign corruption scandal while ignoring the biggest corrupt organisation in the world that commits war crimes on a yearly basis.... the american government. Guardian having a piece on the recently passed trade treaty bill and how when the votes weren't there yet another magical couple of million got spread out amongst the undecided voters and suddenly the votes were there for the bill(that was just the last minute obviously and clearly bought votes... MUCH more money would have exchanged hands earlier on for many of the earlier votes).

Corruption of this type happens everywhere in the world, every single day. England's bid was corrupt, there were two options the bids weren't corrupt in which case Fifa had a public mandate to go to new countries and new continents... we couldn't win. Another option is the bids were corrupt, the only chance to win therefore being to buy votes. Up front anyone with a brain knew we either bought more votes than anyone else or had zero chance of winning yet the people behind the bid pushed the bid. Many people involved got paid, a decent amount of money was spent all by people promising we had a shot of getting it. There was absolutely no chance of England winning it unless it was the most corrupt of all the corrupt bids.... either way England's bid was itself corrupt.

Everyone at every level throughout the FA, Fifa, government, it's all corrupt yet people decide to get upset over one particular part of the corrupt system... the most pointless and least significant corruption.

The most likely situation is the FBI is involved because some american corporation that was itself helping to buy votes for some bid got upset at being 'out-corrupted' and losing out and then using their political power (which they bought through corruption) to instigate an investigation into the guys who beat them.

Pulling Europe out of Fifa... lol, because Uefa isn't corrupt either, nor the FA itself, it's miraculous how delusional some people are.

Everyone in Uefa, all the major federations are in Fifa, and they collectively voted for Blatter.. why, because he's making them money. 100% for certain people involved in the FA, England representative at Uefa and Fifa have been involved in corrupt things, this is how the world works.

Of all the world corruption to get upset about Fifa doesn't rank anywhere at all. American policy is bought and paid for by people who make a profit off it. They've been at war or creating war since the end of the WW2, all for profit, entirely corrupt with millions of lives lost as a result..... but lets all get upset because a world cup gets hosted in Qatar instead of wherever else it gets held.

People who have worked with Fifa 40 years ago said they were corrupt then.

Maybe not the same corruption to todays standards but Fifa needs disbanding.

Everything was corrupt then.

However, FIFA was proven to be corrupt in the late 90s with ISL. However, because bribery in Switzerland wasn't illegal at the time the Swiss authorities did nothing.

FIFA buried the whole thing, under Blatter's leadership, and carried on thinking they were untouchable.

This is why we are here today.

Interesting that 'Nike' appear to be 'helping' with the investigations, something tells me that FIFA have a lot of fingers in different pies and this could potentially be a huge case.

I also read that there has been a 'serious' investigation in to FIFA ongoing for ~17 years.

Sadly, most of what you write is probably true.

I would disagree that the English FA or most of the European FAs are involved in illegal corruption though. Sure, significant sums are spent on PR and hospitality during the bidding process. But direct bribes to officials or foreign FAs in return for influence or support is unlikely in this case.

The FA are no saints. The whole of football needs to take a long hard look in the mirror. The players, agents, managers, owners, clubs, national and international associations . It's out of control.

I've started to take a dim view of football over the last couple of years. What happens on the pitch is underwhelming, what happens off the pitch is disgraceful, what happens in the boardrooms is immoral. It doesn't justify the hype or the price.

Direct bribes or indirect bribes makes no difference. It's things like, who do you think won the contract to build the stadium for the olympics, you think the best bid won or was it someone on the team making the decision was friends with the guy who owns the construction company... or got a free holiday home in the Bahama's for life or whatever else.

Any time you have a vote with anything over a few hundred quid involved you have corruption. It's how humans operate. The FBI is corrupt because it's direction is led by a completely and totally corrupt government.. investigate THIS corruption but ignore that corruption... why, because someone who can pull those strings no doubt stands to gain from this corruption being exposed. Lets say the 2022 World cup gets taken away from the host and awarded to a new host, who has the contracts to build a stadium involved in it, or a company being used to run the entire thing.

Everywhere you look there is corruption and the people that investigate corruption are controlled by corrupt people. The entire system top to bottom is corrupt in EVERY country worldwide.

People like to think England is less corrupt, it isn't, people just like to basically pretend everything is fine where they live and everything sucks everywhere else. It's a mechanism for feeling better, live in a bubble and pretend all the bad crap just doesn't happen here or effect your life because thinking about it just makes you feel like crap, basically powerless and completely under the control of other people.

What happens off the pitch is/isn't disgraceful, it's the same as literally every other industry. Ultimately who gives a crap, to me I firstly don't care that much about the world cup, if it's a good one, okay, if it's a crap one, okay, my life hasn't changed. In south africa or Brazil, honestly couldn't care less. Sometimes Liverpool vs Utd is a great game, sometimes it sucks, my life doesn't depend on football or if one world cup is good or not so who gets it really just doesn't matter to me. There will always be money involved in putting on a world cup and someone will always get rich, it's not me regardless of if the world cup is held in England or Qatar.

I do think there are some good reasons to hold world cups and other such events in such places. England, America, they were effectively shamed into doing away with slavery, so was most of the world. Poor working conditions, equality for women, no one wants to give more money away and while you can get away with treating people badly governments and frankly rich people/businesses/corporations will. If there was no world cup in Qatar absolutely zero stories would be around about the horrendous conditions with which they work. Yes people wouldn't die working on the stadiums, but they'd die on other projects the world doesn't give a **** about and no reporters would go there trying to expose it.

A side benefit of taking a world cup to Russia or Qatar is it places a spotlight on those places and people often try to clean up their act when in the spotlight, it's the ONLY time people even try to clean up their act.

Business, corporations and governments need massive fundamental change worldwide... and it isn't going to happen.

It makes a huge difference in a court of law. Also, it maybe unfair, but favouring a bid from a friend is not corruption unless kickbacks are involved.

Corruption does exist in every country, but in the UK, it's not an accepted part of people lives as it is in other parts of the world.

I would never attempt to bribe a person in a position of power. In other countries, it's an everyday necessity.

There are clearly some cultures/societies where corruption is more prevalent than others.

This 110% What surprises me is people who think this doesn't go on in all institutions they are all corrupt. They are all out for themselves. They look down on us peasants and laugh while they steal and rob. Crooks the lot of them. Show me an institution that isn't corrupt and i walk naked through London.

And anyone who believes this isn't common place in the UK also need a reality check.

You get local school boards that are corrupt, the rich kids who don't get expelled because their parents bought their way onto the board with a donation to the school.

The peados who get away with it because they have several higher ranking police people either as friends or maybe also involved in it. How many of these peado scandals have involved cops at all levels looking the other way if not actively misleading or obstructing investigations to help out what are usually rich or influential people. Corruption is and has been rife in England for as long as there have been enough people around to be fighting for power/money.

People who think England isn't corrupt or it's not an every day part of our lives here are blissfully unaware of the reality of life in the UK. The amount you pay for travel, the safety of our streets, the pay we get, the debt we live, the quality of our air, our health care, our education is all heavily effected by corruption. Every single aspect of your life is basically effected by corruption.

In random parts of the world where you can hand a cop £20 to let you off from a ticket... they are merely being more honest about their corruption.

It isn't commonplace as you make out in a very blase manner "oh look at me I'm a man of the world I know how it works"

Are there corrupt organisations out there? Absolutely, but it is not common place because of the fines jail terms companies/individuals can have brought against them. It certainly exists but not in the scale you suggest and certainly not as blatantly as companies get hammered.

If you work in any large multinational with a shred of reputation you will know what I am talking about as getting contracts in most western countries in a company considered corrupt is horrific. Walk into any multinational and see the scale of their compliance departments.

If you want a real life example look at Siemens for starters.

Just because some people do it does not make it acceptable and nor should we stop caring as DM so blithely suggests.
