Are you telling me costa rica have higher skilled players than England? no they don't but what they do have is a huge desire to win, play as a team, great work rate similar to playing in the premier league, and they have tactics that put Italy to bed.
Until England get the fundamentals right they are going nowhere, they look lazy and clueless on the pitch. Hodgson should have had them pressing the ball like costa and taking Italy's play maker out of the game. This **** falls at the managers feet, he and the team have failed miserably.
Firstly it's arrogant to say England have better players, thinking so doesn't make it so.
Secondly, one of the big problems is player ego's, you don't think Fergie, or Moyes, or anyone else has tried to get Rooney to play in the role actually assigned to him? Tactics are great when 10 outfield players stick to them for the majority of a game... when half the team thinks they know better and go walkabout, then tactics becomes a hilarious notion that make no difference.
Talent or technical skill is only one part of a great player, hunger, discipline, willingness to help the team over self, all these things are part of a great player. England seem to fail spectacularly by many of these measures.
A group of 10 Costa Rican players willing to work together for a common goal than work for themselves for a new sponsorship deal can be better for a world cup team, absolutely.
The rest of the world has moved on to producing technically gifted players, only England absolutely refuses to take on board advice/improvements every FA across the world is making... because we invented the sport so we know better.
We have egotistical players, undisciplined players. The Costa Ricans and Chileans didn't show any of that, pure intensity, pure dedication.
England doesn't produce players with those same qualities, I don't think Hodgson did well, at all, nor terribly. I think the FA for one thing have a huge hand in picking the squad, most if not all of it.
The attitude of our young players, our older stars. Rooney demanding a new contract, while getting fat, missing the season, not even being particularly good when making such demands. The worst thing Utd did was give in to them rather than put the pratt in his place. We keep rewarding utter averageness, or even pure crapness(Welbeck) with more money, more media coverage.
It's a combination, bad training as kids, no one seems to focus on anything but teaching these guys to get the biggest contracts, no one is trying to teach them not to be ****'s, they are all brats, all behave like brats and can't work together as a unit or put in the required effort.
Not all players are like that, but I think there was a significant lack of discipline throughout the team, some simply poor players. If we focus on those who work hard, do the right thing more often than not and will do the job asked of them, we'd have a significant better team.
