FIFA World Cup 2018 - GROUP G [Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England - 18/23/24/28 June] **spoilers**

I feel like throwing up, just listening to fat Sam say England are the best team in the World Cup lol just lol. Even the Panama
manager saying he had to go over to Southgate and tell him what an amazing team England is.

Look it’s an easy group other than Belgium, I’d be shocked if England struggled against Panama or Tunisia...both beaten pretty easily tbf. Sure England scored plenty of goals today and well done but against a crap team like Panama I would imagine most teams would smash more than one goal against them.

Let’s see how England do against Belgium, a tough team in itself.

But the media orgasms are amusing to say the least.

@FoxEye, I can excuse your lack of knowledge as you only watch international football but there is more to football especially how a team acts off the ball as well as on it. England’s movement has been very good so far, Sterling does excel in this, hence why Pep loves him. He might not be scoring or assisting a shed load but there is more to a player’s game than those two stats.

So... let me get this straight... as long as Sterling is running around, he's doing a good job? Really? That's the bar you're setting?

P.S. If he stopped scoring tap-ins for City, do you think Pep would still play him? I mean if his scoring record for them was as poor as his scoring record for England. You think Pep would be, "He's a great player for us. He runs around all day long. Just what I want from my forwards."

:p

Pep might not have that "problem" soon, as Raheem failed to negotiate a new contract with City. Apparently he wants more than the £175k/week he's on now.

Privately, Sterling's team believe he deserves to be remunerated on a scale similar to the club's top earners.
Oh yeah, lol, Sterling in the same class bracket as KdB, Silva, etc :p

Why does this thread feel so negative? Its the best I've seen England play at a World Cup in a very long time regardless of opponent. Remember the days of drawing with Albania and the US and scraping a win against Slovenia? Its not like any of the other big hitters are hitting it out the park either. Mexico and Russia are probably two of the best teams so far which says a lot.

Southgate could also be trying to play sterling into form.

The team is pretty low on creativity (especially with Dele out) and is more about pace and pressure than craft.

Sterling is known to be a fragile player - I don’t mind Southgate doing everything he can to try and get him firing.

Wouldn’t want him to start him in the knockouts in Thais form though.

Algeria :p

Can't say I agree that England are completely mediocre - there are some players exhibiting quality and some putting in very solid football but I wouldn't say they were completely un-mediocre either they were also very shaky when the game moved beyond certain parameters - though many would have been tiring it was telling how the level of game dropped off sharply with Trippier off the pitch - who needs some work when it comes to tackling, etc. but was excellent when he or our team had the ball in terms of positioning and delivery and did a lot to keep play generally away from the weaknesses.

It will be interesting if/when we come up against a team that can put pressure on the back 3-4 players as I think they will crack us open and demolish us like we demolished Panama unless we find some better quality in our 1/3rd of the pitch and/or put someone there who'll impose themselves.

Sigh here we go - 1 st half against Tunisia he got himself into great positions, had great chances but ultimately missed them. He wasn't alone in that though, 2nd half and against Panama he didn't get much of sniff. The common theme being Tunisia int he 2nd half and Panama all game sat back so there was no room for Sterling or Vardy to utilise their pace.

As others have said I am no Sterling fan but if we stick with him against better teams which play a high line (Think Germany) he might be the difference. Find it staggering we win 6-1 and still people are negative. In Roy era we'd still be bossing the game and being patience.

Roll back to 2010. 1-1 draw with USA, 0-0 draw with Algeria, 1-0 win Slovenia. Again 2014 1-2 loss to Italy, 1-2 loss to Uruguay, 0-0 draw to Costa Rica. With the exception of Italy are all teams we should have steamrolled yet we didn't. At least we are doing something right this Tournament. We have already scored more goals that 2010 and 2014 combined!

Also in recent friendlies we have drawn with Italy and beaten Holland.

6-1 vs. a team as poor as Panama tells us almost nothing. Come on.

It's not about who England will face in Group H. It's the teams that sit beyond that. If England top their group, you're probably looking at Brazil or Germany in the quarters, then France or Spain/Portugal in the semis.

If they finish second, then you're looking at the quarters being Mexico, Serbia or Switzerland. Semis would probably by Croatia or Spain/Portugal.
Wow, I didn't appreciate that. We need to lose to Belgium.

Refreshing thing for me is that Southgate seems to have more of a free hand and isn't afraid to be creative, make decisions in good time and seems much more responsive to what is going on on the pitch.

2010, 2014, etc. it was so regimented, stale and unresponsive to the game unfolding before them - banging away at the same old routine even when it was utterly failing and there is no point in watching that.

Exactly. So far, we've beaten two teams we should have beaten with two decent performances; we ought to have scored more against Tunisia and our finishing wasn't at it that day. I'm concerned about our defence and don't for one minute think that we'll beat a clinical side which can defend, but this is the first time for a long, long time that I've actually enjoyed watching an England team at a tournament, and I'm quite happy about that.

I cant see England even drawing with Belgium, the chances we gave away yesterday were unforgivable. A 1/2 better team would have been 3-0 up before half time.

It doesn't matter how good England's forwards are if the defence and midfield are so ponderous and full of errors.

Must have left Pickford totally exposed about 1/2 a dozen times yesterday.

Saying that we were playing with 10 men given how atrocious Sterling was

Agreed, we look good up front but too many gaps in our defence which a good side will exploit, can't see us beating Belgium if it continues that way.

I think Rashford will be starting against Belgium.
