FIFA World Cup 2022 Quarter-Final ** spoilers ** [9th - 10th December 2022]

I was a bit confused by the subs? We were missing a great kick-taker a la Trippier, Mount, Rashford for sure ... maybe one of them on earlier when the French were hacking us all over the place?
Southgate got found out last night as being tactically inept with his sub choices.

We had a proven goalscorer with freekicks and open play, sitting on the bench in Maddison. Why bother taking him if you don't give him a chance to showcase his skills?

Maddison has a single cap and no goals for his country. You don't bring him on in a situation like that. He'll get his chance over the next few years but it's understandable he wasn't playing ahead of players like Foden and Mount with far more experience both for their country and in high pressure matches.

You can only beat who you play, other 'big' countries have lost to 'lesser' teams.

As for the Nation's League? That's pretty much just a step above friendlies, they should only be used to try out new players and ideas tbh.

I'm still waiting on an answer to my question.

The answer to your question is you are rating a manager based on how far they have gotten in a competition.

My answer is you cannot rate a manager on cup competitions. You get favourable draws. If the world cup was done as a league table instead it would paint a very different picture.

Southgates record in world cup 18 and now could easily have been round of 16 exists had we faced big teams.

This is my major problem with him as the team on paper is stacked with talent, Champions league winners and multiple league champions. Our bench completely dwarfed the French last night.

Southgate is not on the level of Bobby Robson or Terry Venables let alone Alf Ramsey.

I thought the idea is to play your best most inform players, who are regualry scoring and playing for their clubs. so the logic that Mount and Stirling gets in before Maddison makes no sense. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box, clearly that is lacking with Southgate on the evidence of last nights game.

We all know that Maddison won't get a single chance while southgate is still the manager.

tbh what other nation would stick around with a guy that fails constantly? Think he's the longest serving international manager or thereabouts and he's rewarded with that failure as he's also the highest paid international manager.

if he was to leave the job, do you think any top clubs would be in for him?

That is an idea, it is not 'the' idea. Clearly form for your country also plays a big part and Sterling was our top scorer at the last major tournament so it was understandable that he played a big part. Maddison was never going to play a part in this tournament unless there were injuries, he's just not high in the rankings right now. Same with players like Gallagher and White, there are always players who are there in case the worst happens. He probably would have played the third group game if we'd been through already just like France, Brazil Spain etc did but we didn't.

How many top clubs would be in for any international managers? You think Scaloni or Santos are in high demand? The only one I can think of that might be is probably Luis Enrique.

Pretty sure Hansi Flick would be in demand if he was to leave Germany. As for Scaloni, I really wouldnt be surprised to see the likes of Athleti (should simeone ever go) or one of the Italian sides go for him when he leaves Argentina

Flick is a tough one, he's only had one top job and it was a very short term one in a super stacked league. Would another top club go for him or will he go back to his previous level? Who knows. Scaloni that is pure speculation, might as well claim that Spurs would want Southgate.

Would you want Southgate at Man U?

I'm pretty sure penalties still count as goals. I would expect Kane to have more assists too. Lineker won nothing with England either so I'm not sure what his definition of delivering the goods is either...
Just pointing out thats a crazy high number of penalties is all :) I dunno, maybe the perception that Lineker could be relied upon more in higher pressure games? Or a more reliable bet to score a non penalty goal when it mattered.
