FIFA World Cup 2022 Quarter-Final ** spoilers ** [9th - 10th December 2022]

Reviewed the game with a clear head. Glaring obvious problems.

-Foul leading up to France's first goal. Could it have been pulled back or was it ignored?
-Blatant foul on Kane being missed for first penalty.
-Grizzy was so lucky to be left on the field. He should have been off for totting up.
-Ref needed to be told about second penalty which was clear as day. He also forgot to give a yellow for it which he needed reminding of by a player on the field.
-He got so many corners and free kicks wrong. Saka's close call come off the defender an goal kick was awarded for example.

The ref was either biased or bent and nothing surprises me with FIFA anymore especially with how the French had a vested interest in Qatar hosting. I searched for the Refs name and low and behold he officiated a game for Argentina in the Copa America and even though the victors Messi complained about his bias.

Would a fully fit France beat England? Yes more than likely and they were missing a tonne of players but what happened last night was a bit of a joke tbh.

At least we didn't go out being poor which has been the case for over a decade. I don't blame Kane for the miss either. His mind is not up to these situations as he has never won anything and you cannot train that. You need that mentality which only comes from winning. It must have been a surreal experience for him on that penalty.

I'm not one for conspiracies, but I guess my main confusion (being someone that doesn't watch football other than England games) was his lack of consistency. It's really hard to understand what really is a foul. France slide in, knock our guy flying, but it's okay cause they got the ball. We do that and it's a free kick.

I don't understand how the Mount GBH wasn't blatantly a penalty. I feel he only gave it on VAR as it would have definitely been suspicious not to at that point.

All in all I thought England played just as well as France. France had the better of the first half, but I felt we had the better of the second. I don't really get the negativity. I guess it's an English thing? France are the current champs and definitely one of the best teams in the world and we held our own.

Mind you, I never really understand how professional footballers don't actually hit the target at a penalty. There are very few external factors and all goals etc are the same all over. How do you miss the target? Getting saved is less in your control, but you have to hit the target...
Because like most sports unless you are a robot there is a huge (more than anyone could imagine at this level) psychological factor at play, doubled by the fact he’s shooting at someone he practices against every week, it’s something you simply can’t replicate exactly, only prepare for as best you can.

Some interesting facts on penalties here.

Since 2009 almost 100,000 penalty shots have been taken on football pitches around the globe. 75.49% of those resulted in goals, 17.57% were saved by goalkeepers, 4.07% went wide and 2.87% hit posts or crossbars.

WHAT DOES THE BEST PENALTY SHOT LOOK LIKE?

Method:
accuracy priority
Number of steps: 5<
Run-up speed: Medium

The “power” shot method is the least reliable one. In 28% of occasions it does not become a score. The “accuracy” shots are way more efficient: the softer the shot, the better the chance to score.

We had 2 pens and only ourselves to blame for losing. Always the same in competition football, England do well against the poor teams and everyone thinks they will win, first proper opposition and it all falls apart.
I didn’t see it fall apart? we played a decent game of football and on another day would have beaten the world champions who despite having injuries are the best team in the tournament. We might have had two penalties but it should have been three, the first French goal shouldn’t have stood we were far from embarrassed or out played football is a game of fine margins and another day Jude bellinghams strike flies in the top corner or Harry Maguires header is the other side of the post or Kane gets a hat trick from the spot and it’s the French wandering how they got beat in a close game.

England were the better team overall and the refereeing was poor, those are facts.

Kane also missed a spot kick and France’s first goal was a sublime finish but there was a foul at the beginning, those are also facts, not speculative discussion points.

This absolutely isn’t a “just like other tournaments” loss. Hence, your post is pretty crap tbh. Inability to differentiate that performance from others is an immediate note to ensure you consider that persons opinion moot, in this case.

I was discussing this with a few friends last night - are there any stats on:
- players taking two penalties in the same match
- players taking penalties against a keeper they play with at club level

I'd assume both of those things slightly reduce the chance of scoring, and to me Kane shouldn't have taken the second one

Yep. I think for most other recent tournaments under Southgate you could argue that he's stood by his own style of play a little too much and didn't switch it up when necessary. Last night however we where switched on and positive in almost every regard. We turned up to win from the off.

I've seen some people argue that it was a 50/50 split but I've honestly no idea where they're seeing that. We dominated for huge portions of the game and on any other day we could well have been in the semis after 90. But that's football. Sometimes it just doesn't go your way regardless of whether you feel you've earned it or not.

The French articles I’ve seen this morning haven’t mentioned the ref, but the members of the winning French squad all thought they’d faced a very good England squad and luck had been on the French side. Several pieces mentioned Mbappé having an “off” night and surprise at Kane’s missed penalt.

Imagine if Kane doesn’t take it and someone else misses he would get absolutely hammered. He is a world class striker who spends the entire game waiting for a one on one with the keeper from ten yards and has a decent record from the spot. He has to take it and he will know himself he should at the very least be forcing the keeper to save it. Such a shame but these things happen!

He has the mouldings of a world class striker but he doesn't have that killer edge. He is too clean. You need that in these situations and it got too much for him. The more you play in these type of games the more you become used to it and control it.

Kane is nearly 30 and has only played in three finals.

Giroud for example has played in 11 by comparison.

Err why is Howe trending?

He's already stated he's happy at Newcastle.

Also I don't believe he would make at good international manager.

Part of his skill set is coaching and improving players. The team is highly drill on their jobs and fitness.

He just wouldn't get that time with the players at the international stage.
Someone is getting nervous :D

Because he plays for Spurs, nothing to do with the player.

The ref definitely made a few errors. Chin up Harry we still love ya. Takes a lot to stand there a take a penalty when you got the whole nation looking down on you. Learn from this and move on. You can see the terrific progress, the talent and the togetherness of our team. Thanks for the journey I'm still proud of you all!

My thoughts on the game last night and taking into account that I do not even support England.
But honestly England played very well and should have beaten France. French defending was all over the place.

The ref was an absolute joke tbqf. How the **** did he miss the second penalty shout?? It was clear as day that was a penalty as the French defender barged into the English player. The fact that VAR had to be called to question made me bewildered .

Kane and his first penalty was spot on but god knows what he was thinking with his second one . Will be interesting to see if he gets raked over the coals after his miss last night, will he get blasted like Saka did with his penalty miss in the euros final??

The other thing I was mystified by was Southgate taking Saka off for Sterling…why why why?? Saka was causing France a real headache with his runs but Southgate decides to take him off and put Sterling in…bizarre really.

But honestly as a neutral in this game I thought England were the much better team all round. Could have easily had 3-4 goals on their day but sadly wasn’t meant to be.

Also don’t go on twitter as Ryanair put up a hilarious tweet about last nights result . Some of you might get upset by it

A lot of talk this morning about "young England" having a great future etc - but then you realise Kane is our only really top class English striker - all the rest are 2nd tier at best.....any coming through ?
