Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Mad isn't it. When we look back on our fond memories of the classics we always seem to forget about this kind of thing lol. I did similar in FF8 and the thought of doing it now is just horrific.

I have gone back and played FF7 a few times. Holds up well to me.

The rest of the series after 7 not so much for some reason
Especially after FF9 where it changed a lot.

I remember enjoy FF10, but when I replayed it around 2017 I found it a let down which did not match with my memories.

I have FF9 installed on my steam deck. I did enjoy playing it. But the story just did not grab me to the point I could not put it down. Been a year not played it already actually and I think I was maybe 20% through it.

FF7, yeah, I just have a special place for it. Loved it back then and still love it now.

I also recall grinding sandworms around Costa Del Sol as I really wanted the house lol not sure if it was very efficient for making gil, I recall they gave a fair amount but it was close by. This is why I enjoy just going through the game (Remake) on easy mode, I get the heavy nostalgia (which is bittersweet) and a chance to see things that weren't possible back then. I mean the dialogue is pretty cringey at times but FFVII was goofy from the start, just that I am now older. I could honestly talk about it all day, I can vividly remember everything not just from the game but how it made me feel etc back then.

I find X remaster holds up very well still, I finally finished VIII a couple of years ago, it left a mark on me but wasn't a favourite, I think had I played it back then it may have been, not sure. Yet to play IX, I tried on PS but I think the fps made it really horrible, no doubt there is a way to improve on PC, I know there are some great mods for VII on PC for 60fps everywhere etc but in a way it's then not the same game to me. Don't want to go too off-topic anyway, but also probably doesn't warrant a separate FF thread lol.

On chapter 3 or 4 on remake now, just about to do second mission. One thing I missed (I was 13) back on the original was the bit about the first mako reactor explosion being too big, it's alluded to because I recall Jesse saying something like she must have miscalculated but it wasn't until remake it made sense when Shinra did what they did. I don't think I'd have ever made that link.

I still think the OST is one of the best ever made, the over world theme in particular but there are so many, the song that plays in City of Ancients gives me goosebumps every time, even back then I could just tell something was going to go down, it was like anxiety/melancholy/mysterious in musical form. I like the version in remake 'Seven Seconds till the End' just a shame it was only used so sparingly but I get why, sounds even more haunting with the strings.

Because back then we had a lot of something we don't have now.. Time.

Well it runs well with only slight stuttering very occasionally which is extremely unusual for an Unreal Engine 4 game on PC. I heard that it's using Direct Storage and perhaps that's what's making the difference.

However, DLSS Performance mode at 4K doesn't look quite as temporally stable as whatever they are using on PS5 for antialiasing (with some shimmer and flickering lines), but it's so much sharper it's incredible, so the image ends up looking much better.

The big annoyance is in being unable to transfer my PS5 save to PC, 100+ FPS is so much better than 30.

Edit: I was getting some stuttering with the high preset, but I put that down to a VRAM limitation because MSI Afterburner showed that 10GB is not enough even at 4K DLSS Performance. Changing the texture resolution to medium and background object detail to high solved any stuttering problems for me, but YMMV. However, with these settings it is much better than pretty much any other UE4 game and UE4 is notorious for having stuttering problems on PC.

Have you tried swapping the dlss DLL for the new DLSS4 version using profile J?

Not yet, but thanks for tip. I play on my LG C1 TV from my sofa so at that distance I don't notice it anyway. It's only when I was pixel peeping and sitting very close to the screen that I noticed a slight difference.

Not sure I'm sold on the Ubisoft style open world tbh. Anything easily skippable or is 100%ing worth doing?

The constant chatter with the robot kid is tiring as well, doesn't really fit with the 'Terrorist group on the run vibe', I feel like an errand boy.

Managed to get to chapter 2 :)

So, DLSS works a bit different in this game. If you want say DLSS Quality, there is no place to select it. You have to choose dynamic resolution and set both to 66%.

Very weird way of doing it

I'm running 100 max, 66 min and I rarely see dips below 60 at 4K on my 4070.

You should be having a grand old time, it is weird but it's my best experience of DLSS in a long time.

Same as Wukong, and probably there is another game or two like it but certainly a weird choice in both cases to forgo the usual way of doing it

I've heard that can cause issues, it's best locking it to 1 or the other

Zero on my end thus far.

That said, I'm sitting a few feet away on the couch while playing on my TV. Those playing at desks close up might be more perceptible to any issues.

The only noticeable issue I've experienced is texture popping, I suspect that's due to the design behind the game making heavy use of the PS5's NvME. Installing the game onto the fastest drive you have should alleviate a lot of that with some luck!
