Mad isn't it. When we look back on our fond memories of the classics we always seem to forget about this kind of thing lol. I did similar in FF8 and the thought of doing it now is just horrific.
I also recall grinding sandworms around Costa Del Sol as I really wanted the house lol not sure if it was very efficient for making gil, I recall they gave a fair amount but it was close by. This is why I enjoy just going through the game (Remake) on easy mode, I get the heavy nostalgia (which is bittersweet) and a chance to see things that weren't possible back then. I mean the dialogue is pretty cringey at times but FFVII was goofy from the start, just that I am now older. I could honestly talk about it all day, I can vividly remember everything not just from the game but how it made me feel etc back then.
I find X remaster holds up very well still, I finally finished VIII a couple of years ago, it left a mark on me but wasn't a favourite, I think had I played it back then it may have been, not sure. Yet to play IX, I tried on PS but I think the fps made it really horrible, no doubt there is a way to improve on PC, I know there are some great mods for VII on PC for 60fps everywhere etc but in a way it's then not the same game to me. Don't want to go too off-topic anyway, but also probably doesn't warrant a separate FF thread lol.
On chapter 3 or 4 on remake now, just about to do second mission. One thing I missed (I was 13) back on the original was the bit about the first mako reactor explosion being too big, it's alluded to because I recall Jesse saying something like she must have miscalculated but it wasn't until remake it made sense when Shinra did what they did. I don't think I'd have ever made that link.
I still think the OST is one of the best ever made, the over world theme in particular but there are so many, the song that plays in City of Ancients gives me goosebumps every time, even back then I could just tell something was going to go down, it was like anxiety/melancholy/mysterious in musical form. I like the version in remake 'Seven Seconds till the End' just a shame it was only used so sparingly but I get why, sounds even more haunting with the strings.
