Focus RS -Would you? And which colour

Yeah, MrLOL was running a modded high powered car and it's clutch was fine - until the day that it broke. Notice how he hasn't got "VXR" written in his sig anymore... take a guess why...

whats that got to do with the evo / subaru ?

The manufacturers stated torque limit for the gearbox was 400 nm or around 300 lb/ft

I remapped it to nearly 400 lb/ft because i was gullible enough to believe tuners saying it would be fine. Lesson learnt. But the lesson here isnt that anything with 300bhp goes through clutches. Its do your own reasearch, and when you tune your cars, trust nothing but your own instinct.

The 8 year old car would be people who usually suggest E46 M3s, and not aimed at this thread.

It is not an excuse, I do not need one. Its a common trend, if you can find a "Should I buy this hot hatch brand new" thread, that hasn't resulted in the above, please post it.

This thread was actually titled "Focus RS, Would you?" it wasnt entitled, how can i find the cheapest RS etc.. it specifically said YOU, referring to me and all the other posters in here. Furthermore, nowhere in his post did he say he would only consider buying a new car. We discussed that if thats what he wants then fine.

But is this decision of only wanting a new car sensible ?? hes never said he wasnt open to it, and asked us to discuss. And we did, and we came to the conclusion that you can get so much more metal for your money if you dont buy new. Its all so easy to go for a test drive in a shouty green thing and get all wrapped in it and make a rash decision. A decision that when the novelty has worn off 6 months down the line you regret.

We're here to challenge people who get caught up in the moment and stop trying to make a sesnible and rational decision. If he doesnt want our advice, or doesnt listen then fine. But since this isnt the focus owners forum this isnt going to be a thread full of "yeah mate, get one, it will be great !!" and will challenge the OP to make a sensational and well thought out choice.

If he chooses the RS after our advice then fine, we did say that if you really want an RS, then obviously nothing else will do since its not an RS. But so far the OPs concerns have been about cost, not "its not an RS, i'm not interested" and this is where we can help by helping him make an informed decision about what he can / cant afford to run.

Seriously whats with the chip on your shoulder ?

depends entirely on what the rating is.

the V8 mustang's block was made from granite, and is good for 800bhp on stock internals. You cant go past about 350bhp on stock internals for the Astra VXR engine for example. What applies to one car you cant apply to all others. It entirely comes down to how well engineered the OE part is. Bottom line is, however much i loved the VXR, it was cheap performance for a reason. It wasnt over engineered like some cars are.

Did i see a ninja edit there? I could have sworn that it USED to say "tell that to the people who recommended the E46 M3's"
Nope

Comeon, we both know you didn't read the thread properly, moaned about something, then discovered that you were wrong and now your backpeddling.

I'm not back peddling at all, I was making an observation on the general attitude of this forum toward brand new FWD hot hatches, and the observation still rings true.

Seriously whats with the chip on your shoulder ?

Its not a chip on my shoulder, but I cannot contain the huge sigh every time I see comments along those lines.

OP, my advice would be to look at the 12 month old market and purchases a car that was potentially £40k+ new. Spend £28k on a RS and you will lose a huge amount and be sat in something that is fundamentally just a Focus.

I doubt the new RS will hold its residuals as well as the MK1, purely because the MK1 was a pure enthusiasts car produced for a very short period. Ford look to be set to milk the RS for all it's worth to ensure this time they actually return a profit on the RS.

When a thread is posted about buying a new car many on here will (quite rightly) provide advice that their money is far better invested into the used car market.

Unfortunately every single one of theses threads gets de-railed by those obsessed with pointing out that the OP wants a new car. I agree that some suggestions are a bit extreme but it does serve the purpose of highlighting how far your £28k can go.

Motors is an incredibly usefull source of oppinion.

its not an owners forum full of lemmings all going "yeah mate, get one, will be brilliant" which doesnt really help you in making a balanced decision.

If you have all the facts, and weigh up that you could afford to run a 330bhp Impreza STI, and have change in your pocket after 4 years, but dont want to. Then fine

at least you've weighed up the pros and cons and made your own mind and wont have any regrets and think "i wonder if ..."

OcUK is very good at challenging people to really think about their choices. For every member who doesnt need us and makes their decision and is happy with it anyway, i'm damned sure there will be at least 1 other poster who've we spared making a mistake. You see a fair few come back with problems, and it dawns on them that they made the wrong choice. So out of those that do ignore our advice, a sizeable ammount later admit that really they should have listenned to us and helped them make a better decision.

But an Impreza is a completely different car to be honest.

You need to be going much faster in an Impreza/Evo before you are reaching the same levels of fun. They are also ****ing terrible every day cars, and are good for one thing, and one thing only, going fast.

Words of wisdom Im sure mate, as have most of the posts been, thanks guys. I very much like the look and sound of the RS, maybe has something to do with remembering my grandfather's sprayed up cortina circa 1977 when I was a kid (the car was crap but it looked the part!). One of the reasons for wanting one is that I shall be moving near Geneva for work for the next year, and can imagine this car will be so much fun on the Alpine roads. But yes I must not get caught up in the moment and look around at what else is available for that kind of money that still retains practicality. If I do go for something else it may be the Evo if its gonna be similiar running costs, always loved the Evos too, will check those out although I know nothing about the newer models.

Cheers guys, I didnt think for a moment that I'd prompt quite the response. ;) But if I do go for the RS, it's gonna be in green, **** it! :D

I think with the FWD debate this puts it in pretty good perspective

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9YhRJkucIo

Both similar power, one 4WD other FWD. That said, the RS puts the power down nicely enough in the real world.

lol what a shocking piece of journalism

shock as 4 Wheel drive beats 2 wheel drive in snow. And i literally LOL'd at the "golf as the better image" comment. Dont go repeating that on here !! :D

I think it looks better, as I like subtle yet powerful. The RS is all up in your face letting you know its presence and ability!

Really? Says who? Have you driven both a new FRS or Impreza/EVO up to or near to the limit to justify what you've just said?

The FRS has frankly ridiculous limits due to fancy suspension, chunky tyres and the addition of massive power under the bonnet, as does the Impreza/EVO.

To get anywhere near its limits (where I think we'd all agree is where the "fun" is) you'd need to be absolutely spanking it to a degree that'd get your license revoked in a flash.

And I've never read a single review thats said Impreza's or EVO's make terrible everyday cars. They're no wafting Audi/Merc, but I don't see how they're any less usable than a new FRS. In fact, the formers have 4 doors, the FRS only has 2...
