Focus RS -Would you? And which colour

Guys,

After all this, and taking into consideration what you've said amongst other things, I've had a change of heart.

The Focus RS, although a fabulous all-round motor in my eyes, was intended to be a stop gap until I persued the car I've been dreaming about since being able to drive it in Project Gotham on the original Xbox many years ago, and seeing it on Top Gear.

So after much thinking I've decided to be patient, hang in there, continue to live with something a little more normal for a few years yet, and put my order in for.....

Its British hand-built.

A two seater.

No roof, or much other bodywork for that matter.

It goes like **** off a shovel.

Im putting my order in for an Atom this week! I've been looking at these for years,so to hell with it, let's get the ball rolling as the waiting list is 18 months. Not everyone's cup of tea or what they'd do with that kind of cash, but Im not looking for differing opinions on that one.

What I'd really appreciate though, as I've appreciated your comments, is help on another matter, a practical car to get me by for the next few years....

Supercharged, at 5K over the cost of the n/a, but that sound, mmmm! Went to the Caterham showroom to check out the competition, the R500, great car, lovely view looking from the front over the bonnet, love the way it growls, but just cant get away from the fact is pugley as hell from it's boxy rear arse end.

He'll be trying to buy it back again in 6-10 months I bet. If I could borrow a bit of money I could buy that off him, problem is ...I'd have to run it then :p ...oh I can dream.

Oh I just bought a 540i damn it, stay focussed Moeks, stop looking at other cars before you lose even more money!

If I were to get one I'd have to get it in the green, it's lairy as hell but that's what that car is all about.

Must say the stance that car has on the road does look very good, particularly with the fat diffuser at the back. Just such a shame they didn't go 4wd with it.

Totally late to the party and everything has been answered already (and probably far better than I would have :p), and it's irrelevant anyway. But just for the record..........

Oh and Evo's of old used to love eating clutches for breakfast. Not sure if that's changed - can't see it changing massively? (Gaijin, that's your cue ;))

Clutches are a weak point, allegedly designed to be so, although that may be a cop out. No idea on the clutch life for the X, no idea whether the drivetrain was re-engineered to be easier on it.

Fact remains is that whatever way you look at it, you will still be spanking up to 400lb/ft through a relatively "small" clutch and if you factor in launches, then you can kiss goodbye to a long clutch life.

Of course you can go twin and triple plate, but usually at the expense of drivability and judder.

I'm not sure i'd want to go down a twin plate route given how stiff my clutch is already. A traffic jam on an incline is like a leg workout in the gym.

IIRC it is now 10,000 mile intervals. Although i know Gaijin has 4,500 mile fluid changes on his 8 (not sure if this is compulsory)

You are correct that the interval is a far more manageable 10k, but every other service on the earlier evo's are for the most part, engine oil, filter and AYC fluid changes.

It's still more expensive of course, but its not quite the 2x cost it can sometimes be made out to be.

The 4,500 mile services are compulsory if you value your AYC pump ;)

Mines a 7 by the way ;)

As the above info is now largely irrelevant, I shall exit stage left rather sharply ;) :P

I honestly do think the focus RS would benefit from a proper electronically controlled full 4 wheel drive setup.

Not some haldex system, but proper 4wd like in impreza hatchback.

The Impreza STI 330s will do 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and weighs in at 1500 kilos.

Focus RS is about 1450 kilos but only does it in about 5.9 seconnds.

Considering various tuners are now talking about the RS producing 350bhp and up, i dont think the added weight is the issue.

And i dont buy the argument that 4wd is boring. The impreza STI hatchback rarely gets described as "boring to drive" because its 4x4. A proper 4x4 setup makes for an amazing drive.

Ford had their reasons for making the FRS FWD and they made a half decent job of it. People are too quick to jump on the FWD is fail bandwagon.

4WD always has an advantage 0-60 over FWD for obvious grip reasons. Once rolling it makes little difference.
