[ Folding ] We only need 13,000ppd more to start catching ABXzone

Odd.. mine're currently on 4% but that may be a previous % done from before they became SMP? Maybe I should delete the work files and start it again.

Right OK so here's a little something that can hopefully be incorporated into the official guide as an update - it would seem things have changed since it was originally written.

The "F@H Setup Guide: Illustrated for your pleasure", Linux setup using finstall part 1 works pretty much great up to making the finstall file executable. However: the finstall file will download the wrong F@H installation - it will download
Linux (x86) and BSD *combined uniprocessor and SMP client* (32-bit build; 64-bit OS required for SMP)
and it needs to download
Linux (x86) and BSD *combined uniprocessor and SMP client* (64-bit build)
. To get around this I opened the finstall file in a text editor before running chmod +x finstall, scrolled down to the section containing the download information, and changed the relevant bit:
#Where to get FAH console client & where to place it:
FAH_Settings() {
#FAH directory:
Fdir=~/foldingathome
#Latest FAH client:
Fclient_linuxA_Fdwnl=http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/
Fclient_linuxA=FAH504-Linux.exe

Fclient_linuxB_Fdwnl=http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/
Fclient_linuxB=FAH6.02-Linux.tgz
Fclient_linuxB_name=fah6

Fclient_linuxA_SMP_Fdwnl=http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/
Fclient_linuxA_SMP=FAH6.02-Linux.tgz
Fclient_linuxA_SMP_name=fah6

became

#Where to get FAH console client & where to place it:
FAH_Settings() {
#FAH directory:
Fdir=~/foldingathome
#Latest FAH client:
Fclient_linuxA_Fdwnl=http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/

Fclient_linuxA_SMP=FAH6.24beta-Linux.tgz
Fclient_linuxA_SMP_name=fah6

(changes in bold). After that, I followed the instructions without issue until I came to starting the program and discovering that it wasn't running SMP. Referring to Sir les MP's guide here I discovered that the problem was that SMP still needs to be configured so:

you will need to adjust a file called FaH in each CPUx folder

Open the FaH file into a text editor and locate the last line.

$add_pref /home/aeternum/foldingathome/CPU1/fah5 $FAH_flags $FAH_default_flags $@

You will need to alter the path to point to the new fah6 executable and add the -smp flag

$add_pref /home/aeternum/foldingathome/CPU1/fah6 -smp $FAH_flags $FAH_default_flags $@

Once you have made the changes, save the file. You can now restart your folding clients.

Hope this information is useful.

Alas, although they're now 'working' on SMP, they're not actually doing anything :o just sitting there on 4%, and there's still four folders.. (CPU0-3)

I have issues:

Essentially, it's not working and keeps retrying but fails... :(

miniyazz if you are using the SMP client you only need one client in one folder, the SMP client will use all 4 CPU's

Remove the Client2/3/4 folders that you have and only use the one folder.

mine is running ok and getting 6kPPD :D
foldi.jpg

So that plus my other clients = max 22k

Edit: It just shut down the client erm ok :(

K I've ignored all the original folders and reconfigured it in a different directory; it's using all my CPU so looking hopeful, thanks :)

But because I've done that, I presume I'll need to somehow install the new client as a service? - can I copy installService etc across, run them and expect them to work? :p :o

Congrats :D that your CPU in sig?

EDIT: Oh, and: [QUOTE]NOTE: The tpr file used for this simulation is in an old format, for less memory usage and possibly more performance create a new tpr file with an up to date version of grompp[/QUOTE] :confused:

OK, stop the client.

Then open a dos box, go to the folder where its installed and run the exe with the -configonly switch, when it asks you to configure advanced options say yes and look for the option to run it as a service, say yes to that and it will install as a service. Make sure that the account the service runs under has permissions to access the folder where its installed. Then start the service from the management console in winders.

Hmmm, there's no option to run as service (unless it's a client parameter to add?):

Code:
miniyazz@ubuntu:~/FAH$ ./fah6 -configonly

Also, I've had issues with permissions before, with me not having write access to etc.init.d and such like - sorry for being an ubuntu noob but I have no idea how to give myself permissions if I'm not the 'owner'!

Edit: just to clarify, I'm running this in Ubuntu VM, not Windows!

Thanks

For the SMP client, you need to be using an x64 install.

I use Arch x64, because it's very minimal and has no gui by default (more cycles for crunching).

Basically, create a folder in your home directory, change directory into it, download the fah core, extract it, create your client.cfg and you can start crunching... however, I like mine to be running in a "screen" so I can log off, disconnect, whatever and it will continue running.

For the last part of that, you'll need to install screen (on ubuntu, that will be "sudo apt-get install screen"), then create a script to call fah in a screen.

so...
Code:
nano -w ~/fah
>>>>>>>> this opens a text editor called nano - pretty easy to work out how to use it
>>> add the following
#!/bin/bash
cd ~/folding
screen -A -m -S folding ./fah6 -smp (you can add a -d to this to detach automatically)
>>>> save the file
chmod +x fah
>>> done

OK... so to run fah, just type "./fah". to disconnect the screen, press "ctrl+a+d" at the same time (three keys). to re-connect again, type "screen -x folding". Fah will run in the background and you don't even need to be logged in. You'll need to log in to run it though.

This is the closest that I can be bothered explaining on how to run this as a "service" in linux (this is not running as a daemon but it is nice and easy).

I can put together a much better "how to" - including how to create a proper daemon - at some point if needed... basically when I can find some time.

Cool, thanks. :)

-smp isn't sufficient, you need something like
Code:
-smp 4

The finstall script isn't needed to get this running. Just putting fah6 in a folder and running
Code:
./fah6 -configonly
then ./fah6 -smp 4 is sufficient. It won't remember to start every time you reboot your computer though. Screen is something I'm going to need to look into.

@walls I would be thrilled if you could just provide a link to somewhere giving vague instructions on setting it up as a daemon, I don't know where to start.

I'll be folding again as soon as I can get my damned computer stable enough to :(

Well I looked into that after I'd put in the -smp parameter and it did look like I needed -smp 4 - but it does seem to be working properly, with just -smp:
Code:
miniyazz@ubuntu:~/FAH$ ./fah6

4 cores detected

... blah blah

It looks like it autodetects how many cores if no value is given :)

My PPD is between 4700 and 5000 now for the SMP client, it's just the one client, using all available CPU resources, and it completed the first job successfully a couple of hours ago :)
