Food “shortages”

If you have anywhere outside to put them they look after themselves.

We have sage, chives and mint that need hacking back because they just go mental. Dill is not so predatory.

But I have the same problem with basil indoors, it always seems to look good and the next second as though it's just decided there's no point to life anymore.

I have Rosemary and Thyme outside in a pot. No need to do anything to it but water a few times a week. It's like weed, lives through the winter just fine. I did have to re-pot it last year when it was looking a bit sad but then it came back like a vengeance now, doubled its size.

I tried Basil, kept it okay inside on the kitchen window but the leaves slowly went yellow some reason after about 3 months so I put it into the ground, then it got really happy...but then winter killed it.

Yeah so herbs there are really UK happy ones, mint, rosemary etc they will be fine outside and once established they will be fine with limited/no effort.

The ones like basil are not UK herbs basically. They will have been greenhouse grown and as such far happier in a warmer and more humid place.
They need as close to that as you can, especially at the start. One way to give them closer to that is to put a 2 litre bottle over them to create in effect a mini greenhouse. (Ie cut off bottom and just stand it over the herb pot)

Most of the time repotting is unnecessary, the main factor is they have probably used the good nutrients from their media. So just give them some liquid food (tomato food or general food based fertiliser) and they will perk up. Repotting just gives a new source of nutrients.

I'm in a flat but do have a balcony!

Basil, chives and oregano are probably my most wanted, are they hardy enough to be outside year road?

And like you, have basil plant that looks fine in the morning, by the time i'm home from work it's basically died within 12 hours....

Not sure about basil but chives and oregano are happy in our garden, think they would be more than fine on a balcony.

Come to think of it I think our oregano is wild, don't think we ever planted it.

We have a pretty well stocked herb garden but only used Tarragon infrequently hence bought rather than grown.

Turns out the supermarket branded Tarragon is typically Russian Tarragon, rather than the more aromatic (and expensive) French Tarragon. So I guess that could explain the shortage.

Anyway, my point was supply chains are all over the place at the moment, so not unsurprising some products are out of stock.

Supply chains for everything are absolutely ruined at the moment, some big ones i'm experiencing with my business are Sodium Hydroxide, solvents & plastic. We're getting price increases every month at the moment with some lines increasing by 50-60%.

Brace yourselves for things to get a lot worse basically.

The wife came back earier in tears -Seems there is no chocolate that she buys, in Tesco.

If I can't find any I am in for a load of tantrums.

Get used to it, as someone said earlier, back to the '80's. There'll still be a choice, just a much smaller choice than people have got used to having.

Some customers have no idea that we have ZERO control of supply issues. “See this store has no cherry tomatoes again”. We put out delivery, code check it and serve customers.

I can’t find any pitta breads in any supermarkets atm, last week it was whole chickens.

Anyone else come across this?

HGV shortage is starting to rear its head again in run up to Christmas.

I thought it might have been a London thing but the fruit and vege goes off in a matter of days after purchase. Probably because it has to sit for days on a truck somewhere.

It's not just that there is a massive shortage of labour in logistics. I deliver Veg to Aldi and Lidl. Last week alone I was in Belvedere and they only had one guy checking pallets for 10 bays where drivers are tipping a full trailer of 24 pallets every 30 minutes. You can then be waiting 2-3 hours just for the paperwork to confirm receipt of goods. Multiply that for all the different locations the product goes too and it is no wonder stuff is going bad because it is sitting in RDC's for ages.

We also collect from a Potato farm to deliver to said regional distribution centres that have full hangers of Potato's going bad because they cannot get enough trucks in to take them.

I don't mind a few things missing on shelves.

It better than getting shot at.

Plenty of bourbon whiskey about, which isn't really anymore expensive that in has been for years.

We find it fun to just see what’s in the store and buy the things that are there and make stuff with it, tbh its been a regular occurrence for us for years to see vast areas for the fresh section empty but that’s what you get when you shop at 7-8pm at Aldi in our area.

Alcohol has kept its price. May have increased 50p or £1 per litre. Unlike milk which has doubled in price for 1 and 2 pints
