Football and the Coronavirus

tbf Leicester have had an increase of COVID+ staff since they first asked for it to be postponed.

Almost feel for Spurs, they've travelled up to Leicester and the decision being made today means they can't play their Rennes fixture instead :D

Won’t that give teams like Arsenal an advantage. They can play their games at a regular schedule and already have points in the bag, whereby Spurs and Utd’s fixture list will be very congested.

Karma for Spurs telling Rennes their game was going ahead only to call it off after Rennes travelled to London.

Have they made a statement?

Crikey.

The Premier League has released a statement in relation to the postponement of Manchester United's match against Brighton on Saturday.

It makes interesting reading considering a report earlier today (see 14:45 GMT) that clubs are pushing for a league-wide shutdown.

"It is with regret that this is the fourth Premier League fixture to have been postponed in the past week," say the Premier League.

"While recognising a number of clubs are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, it is the League’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible.

"Manchester United continues to have an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak within their squad, which has left them unable to field a team for the match at Old Trafford.

"The Premier League Board assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and COVID-19 postponement guidance issued to all clubs."

Hmm. The way things are going, it doesn't look sustainable. We're going to end up with multiple squads missing half of their players (or more). :(

The EFL have made a rule that you must play if you have 14 players, including a GK.

Premier league bosses would go nuts if that rule was brought in.

What do they mean they couldnt field a team? Absolutely nonsense.

As per the MEN these all trained:

Ronaldo
Fred
Lindelof
Amad
Bailly
Varane
Dalot
McTominay
Martial
Bissaka
Grant
De Gea
Fernandes
Cavani

Are the MEN wrong then or?

The EFL have announced that 25% of their players have no intention of being vaccinated. I'm assuming there's similar numbers in the PL too.
At this rate AFCON won’t be happening for UK based players as they won’t be allowed into Cameroon without isolating for two weeks!
There's a civil war going on in Cameroon too! There were lots of reports yesterday saying it was going to be canned but they've been denied, for now at least. The ECA (the group representing European clubs) have wrote to FIFA to say they're not happy releasing their players.

As soon as the Leagues stop postponing games for positive cases then clubs will get stricter with players. It's widely reported that in Germany players aren't being paid if they miss games (or training) due to covid if they're unvaccinated.

I think Kimmich was a big example over there, he since caught Covid and has struggled getting back to fitness due to a related lung issue. Bayern refused to pay him when he couldn't play due to not being vaccinated.
