Football and the Coronavirus

I like like the idea of postponing Euro2020 which potentially frees up some time for all the European leagues to extend their seasons. Clearly we don't know yet whether that will be sufficient but it would at least give associations the option of putting a halt on proceedings without having to instantly create a fixture bottleneck.

Crikey Arteta has tested positive for Coronavirus now :/.

Yeh I’m thinking the season is either going to be postponed or cancelled.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has tested positive too. Whole Chelsea team and backroom squad in self isolation.

This, they're looking at moving the Euro's to next year.

With players testing positive now they have no choice but to postpone.

You can't play games when half the teams are in isolation, not fair or sporting at all.

Best option is probably to just wrap up leagues at today's standings, no promotion or relegation, see you next season.

Someone is going to lose out whatever happens, can't please everyone.

There would be legal challenges for years. Postpone and play it later.

Postpone first, but most likely this is what will happen when there's no time to finish the league before the next season starts.

You would think the league legal agreements would have provision in them for responding to public emergencies.

The problem with postponement is if all the other countries void the season and start a new one in August/September, then we will probably have to do the same.

What happens if it goes on into summer? Surely league will be cancelled. What happened when WW2 broke out?

On 8 September 1939, the Football Association (FA) declared that all football except that organised by the armed forces was suspended 'until official notice to the contrary'. This was in contrast to 1914, when professional football had continued during the first year of war.
