Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I've been given an application form to fill in for the Royal Mail, working as customer services advisor for a team selling the olympic stamps!

Part of this application is asking for bank details as part of their security checks. Do I need to include this? I feel uncomfortable handing over bank details without being given a job.

We've been trying to recruit at work for 2 positions in our IT Helpdesk. It's been a nightmare, they've had about 40 phone interviews and not one of the candidates seems to have any interest in the job, learn anything about our company or have any technical knowledge. I blame the recruitment companies. They just don't look at people's cv properly.

I am still receiving loads of calls from agents offering me roles that I have no skills in or are at the other end of the country. Worst people in the world....after estate agents anyway

Is this Local? I live in Coulsdon and have just started looking for a new job. 4 years experience in IT support ...

Well, just about finished my first contract with my new job. Off to Singapore for a course on the 2nd of June then 60 days at home on full wages :).

Currently working on platform supply vessels as 3rd mate out in West Africa. 60 days on and 60 off.

Best part about being out of the country for more than 6 month of the year is that i don't have to pay a penny to the taxman ;).

You know it's funny, I honestly couldn't care less about the company that I work for beyond the role which I will be doing. The working atmosphere, the specifics of the role in question, and the solvency of the company are important, but what difference does it make if you're writing webservices for Amazon, or Farmfoods at the end of the day, as long as writing webserives is what you'd rather be doing? Don't get me wrong, I know how to play the game, I just don't want to. I got my current position by being brutally honest about that opinion, and I feel I'm better for it. To be fair though, I don't start till Monday, but time will tell. :)

Joining this thread as I too am now unemployed.

Been a chef for 24 years. been at my last place for 8 years till last week when the business went into liquidation and we were all immediately made redundant.

So I am looking for work, but need to find something and fast as I have a mortgage to pay.

It is horrible out there. really is.

couldnt agree more. iv never understood why a company is interested in what i know about them.

but saying that theres also the old favorites which i dont get also, like "why do you want this job" now if its some odd maybe it helps but iv seen this on application forms for morrisons and asda, im pritty sure the managers know why you want the job and its nothing to do with having a calling in customer service its called MONEY!!!!.

also this new signing thing for the jobcenter is a lot better, takes me less than 5 mins of being in the place now to drop the form off, but this work programme is starting to get a tad slow, not heard anything from them for 2 weeks since i did a cv work shop.

guess its to be expected theres supposed to be 1700+ on the programme from my jobcenter so i guess it takes up the hours rather rapidly.

After a month and a half of constant web-scouring, I finally have an interview lined up. I may just be... wait for it.... the next assistant manager at a Halfords on the outskirts of Huddersfield! Woooooo! I knew I'd make you proud mom! *sigh* Still, if I get it, it's money. Sadly my retail background is the only thing that seems to count, not my degree, but at least I have something to work with.

Currently devouring every bit of news on Halfords I can find, but does anyone know any particular stuff I should be looking for before my phone interview on Thursday? I'm now aware of their turnover (but not this particular store so there's a question to ask), and what plans the company has moving forwards, what challenges they're facing etc. Any ideas appreciated.

Well my last hope in Lloyds has not panned out; being made redundant on August 17th and went for another role and didn't get it - was a bit of a last ditch effort in fairness and a grade above.

So now I am out of work as of August 17th with not a clue what to do :(

The severence will make me debt free and leave me about £6k to survive on which could last a fair amount of time (Rent+Bills = £550 so I think 6months is doable)

At a crossroads in my life now... do I go abroad and enjoy myself and try and work elsewhere, do I spend the next x months trying to get another job - my current Salary is £35K so be a big shock to drop to nothing :(

Actually feeling a bit scared now.

Start job hunting mate. Sounds like you at least have some good experience under your belt which means you won't be competing with the hordes of low level job seekers like myself, but all the same I was surprised at how hard it's been to even get a **** job.

Go abroad losing your job could end up the best thing that may have happened to spur you on to other great things.

Also, benefits no point using your savings thats why jsa is there.

I have been given a great opportunity to do contract work for 6 month with excellent pay but I started last week and currently doing training, I am they currently on my 2nd day off due to severe wisdom tooth pain!

I have a dentist note but I have never been sick for work before so is there anychance they will drop me as its contract work with me not going in within these next few days? The pain is to much to work but I really want to attend as its a great opportunity and dont want to be canned :'(

Reading my contract states that I just had to inform them and if it was over several days including weekend I needed a note which I have, I am just asking if its likely if they will sack me as I am missing the training and will no doubt need to catch up! Its for 6months so I have plenty of time but in my contract it states 1 weeks notice for dismissal!

They have a massive workload so I cant see them wanting to get rid of me because they have taken in 10 people and will be taking on 10more to help with the workload!

I've never had to sign on before - been working since I was 15; don't even know where to begin with that kind of stuff... how does it all work!?

Unless of course you have too much saved. I wasn't allowed JSA due to premium bonds

I will have ~£6,000 in savings - no other assets then my Car I guess? I just did the online benefit calculator and it's about £80 a week, better then nothing. I feel wrong going on benefits though, just not right!! Hopefully I will secure something before Aug 17th so won't need to!!

Anyone looking for a Performance Manager / Resource & Planning Analyst by chance!? :D

pro tip about JSA dont tell them you have any savings.

you work hard get some money banked yet are expected to blow all your hard won cash before you get a hand out.

also why feel wrong mcdaniel ?? the jobs market is in a right ole mess, you have worked a long time take a break and use what the state can provide as you have paid in enough over the years unlike some who seem to leave school go to college and then jump straight on jsa come 18.

I've just always worked and never signed on; so not sure just feel like a scrounge I guess.

Is JSA the only benefit people get, im so out of touch with it. Like I say fingers crossee I wont need to!
