Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I see a lot of people mentioning that they have recently lost their JOB. Should I differentiate a 'job' and 'career' here?

I remember someone once said to me a job is something you do to just earn money, but career is something you plan and build on.

At the time I started this thread it was my career as I had been there 6 years, it was effectively 'just a job' but hey. No point nit picking

Since then I've not found a stable role. Come July I'd have been at my current place for two, but I wouldn't call it a career as it's pro rata for a start working in a school.

Got a job offer. The moment I heard the news, man tears dropped down my cheek.

Ok I was only kidding but man I am thrilled.

Was anxious for weeks until now, finally I can rest in peace.

That’s why I can say with confidence that rich people don’t create jobs, nor do businesses, large or small. What does lead to more employment is a “circle of life” like feedback loop between customers and businesses. And only consumers can set in motion this virtuous cycle of increasing demand and hiring. In this sense, an ordinary middle-class consumer is far more of a job creator than a capitalist like me.

I concur.

Someone needs to inform the work programme morons of this very fact !

I didn't want to make a new thread over this so I just thought I'd ask in here.

I'm 19 and started my first job 5 months ago. I work on a 1st line support desk and earn a measly £6.00 p/h but I've just been offered a new role. They want to give me training and a wage increase to £9.00 p/h. In return I have to work nights and basically cover anything that might pop up during the night. I've accepted the job just because more money/training sounded good to me, but I'm curious... How much does someone around my age generally make p/h working as a tech adviser? Since starting to work I've realized how valuable time is and how little we seem to give it away for. :(

£9 ph isnt to shabby to be fair at any age, especially with the state of the jobs market at the moment, but for 19 id say thats not bad at all as it means you could actually get some good cash saved up to buy a house or move on elsewhere in a few years.

word of warning though, trying to get a straight answer on here (or any forum for that matter) about what people earn in various roles can be a mine field especially with the guys who enjoy waving mythical 6 figure salerys about on here from time to time.

Indeed, £9ph isn't too shabby at all :)

Get the experience under your belt chap and see what else is about when the time comes. You're doing well buddy!

well my hours just got reduced from low 18p/w to 8 :| i will earn literally nothing.. so its time i get back to job hunting! i have no idea what to apply for but i am going to try admin assistant roles and junior office assistant if it doesn't work out in 3-4 months ill try to get into apprenticeship :(

Well I have an interview lined up for a rubbish job at natwest, but it's certainly nice to finally get one.

Question: can I just pop into recruitment agencies or do I have to make an appointment?

Good luck for the interview :) I'd probably rather a job at a bank atm rather than where I am now :p

I don't see why not. Especially if you see an advert int he window.

Only thing is, they might get you to fill out a form to apply yourself to that agencey....so it may take a while :p

Well, I'm spending the whole day in Leeds attacking agencies so time is something I have plenty of. Right, we'll see how I get on then. Can't be worse than spamming CVs out to jobsites.

In need of some advice.

I am currently in a admin type job at a medical centre and its great. I enjoy it. Now, come September/October, I will be starting my HND Computing which will be, I think, two days a week. My boss has spoken to me and told me that because of me getting worried with college this year, that I should concentrate more on my college work than work itself. On Friday, I plan to go and speak to her to work something out. I currently work 2 days a week and go to college for the remaining 3 days, so next year it will be 2 days at college and a day off (plan to be in college this day). She says she needs to know that the work will get done, and if I need time off to do college work, the work will not get done.

How should I work it out?

Dark Kyon, aim lower.

Greg
if I was in your place I'd work out if I felt I could do the work in the time allotted and be honest with myself and my boss.
I'd have thought that 2 days of college, 2 days of work and 3 off would have been plenty for work and college but only you can be sure.

Fed up with things.
I'm wanting to hopefully start my "career" and not do any more job hunting and working back at my summer job.
I've also turned down my second summer job this year, last year I got a demotion even though manager amditted it was fault due to poor training and everyone else on the team basically moved up in the company. This year applied for other departments/roles as the became available, then applied for the same department in a role I think I should be in, as well as the role I was demoted from to only be offered a sale assistant role again. Last year I litterly trained the new supervisors, the new customer services assistants, doing tasks above my level, work for other departments. Maybe I've made myself too valuable but if they don't want to treat me right I'm moving on. Sadly I do think they've won by "bullying" me out of there.

So I recently lost my job (second time this year) and I'm back on the hunt again. Something I've noticed this time though is recruiters asking me to, and I quote; "...could you please send me a quick email along the lines of “I am happy for x to represent me for this vacancy at y”

Is this a new legal requirement, or am I somehow tying myself into something nasty?

Well I'm now officially unemployed, for the first time in 5 years.

Just finished my last day (well half day), my boss let me go early as basically there was nothing left for me to do and no point hanging around until 4pm. Back home now and just submitted off my claim online for JSA, will hopefully hear back from them early next week.

I feel ok at the moment as I am still applying for loads of jobs online so I feel optimistic about finding new work pretty soon, well we will see.

Liam
