Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I know exactly what you mean, i go to the Avanta offices in Redcar was supposed to be there for a jobsearch today (basically sat on a computer for 1hr looking at jobs i have already applied for or seen on my own computer at home) so i went in as usual to be told it had been cancelled, wtf i thought, no phone call, email nothing, just a sorry.

Be different if i had cancelled my appointments, there would be hell on.

Be glad when i do get a job, these people who are contracted in have no clue whatsoever, all the time i have been with them they have offered me 2 vacancies to apply for, got an application in at minute fingers crossed i get to interview, if i do i reckon i will get it.

A lass I know who lives in Guisbrough goes to Avanta.
I honestly don't know why I'm not at Avanta.

I had an agency ring me today after they'd seen my CV at Total Jobs, they hope to get me into a future job soon so that's always good.

I know it's 3 pages and missing address etc but that's just in docs :)

Just a couple of observations:

  • I'd be putting my work history before my education
  • Spelt GCSE wrong :)
  • You say math's, personally I always would say Mathematics, however if you don't want to use the full word lose the greengrocers' apostrophe.
  • Never been a massive fan of listing hobbies and stuff on a CV, however do understand why some people might.
  • Same goes for 'references on request' :)

I'm by no means an expert on CVs or the english language, just the things I picked up on having a quick scan :)

That's how screwed up they work, live within few miles of a local office but they send you further away, was same for me and my job centre, had to get them to change it for me.

Like one advisor at Avanta told me, the quicker you get out of this place the better, good luck with the Agency job.

It's my day off so I'm going to be updating all my profiles and reuploading my latest CV on job search sites. I currently work for the Geek Squad instore where I provide instore technical support. I feel fortunate to have got this job. I applied directly on their site and it was all fast moving. Phone interview on a Wednesday, day assessment on the Saturday, job offer on the Monday, and off to training for 2 weeks the next Monday.

Although I enjoy many parts of my job, I'm looking to move on from a retail environment into a more suitable IT support role, and with a better salary to be honest. I'm 26 now, got a BSc degree in Computer Science from a top 5 London university, and I have that experience under my belt, so I need to move on in my career! I've got plans and ambitions, especially by 30 so I need to get cracking on!

Fingers crossed I move on sometime this year. Hey maybe one of you guys can take my role when I go :)

What does that mean? UoL only has 5 serious/academic multi-faculty universities :p

CompSci from a top5 UoL? Probably RHUL or Kings. Maybe QMUL if you're a left-field kinda guy. If it was Imperial you wouldn't have associated yourself with the UoL :p

Cheers mate, oops about the spelling! Will fix tonight.

My recruitment mate helped out and he put my education first, i'll see how I feel with it being second.

Appreciate the feedback.

I've always had education below work experience, especially with as much previous experience as you've had.

My normal approach is to try and keep it to 2 pages maximum with the following layout:

Page 1:
  • Personal Details and contact information using the full width of the page to minimise the space taken, think of it more like a header
  • If no covering letter due to application format a statement paragraph outlining why I'd be excellent for the job
  • Work experience, starting with most recent. Relevant experience and skills for the job I'm applying for listed under each entry in bullet points, less relevant experience can be cut down or condensed where possible.

Page 2:
  • Further work experience entries
  • Education, starting with most recent
  • Hobbies and interests where relevant, don't bother with "music" or other generic terms, only use if I have genuine experience which would help for the job (eg. Mechanic job I would mention I have stripped and prepared my own race bike and performed full engine strip downs at home)
  • Two references with address and if available email/phone

I've seen a few funny CV's pass through recently such as ones with a photo of the person applying (mixed response to if this was a good idea or not in the office) or with a large selection of coloured text, boxes and lines (not so great unless you're applying for a graphic design or publishing job). Try and keep it tidy, uncluttered and to the point.

I get recruiters trying to call me during the morning to talk about opportunities and my CV, but the problem is that I happen to also be working (unsurprisingly) at the same time so I cannot answer the call. Then they leave me voicemails and ask me to call them back. Usually it's a waste of 15 minutes just reconfirming everything that I have taken time to write on my CV already, and I work in a busy central London retail store so I don't even have 5 minutes to spare.

I don't get why they don't just e-mail me so we can communicate back and forth at a convenient time for both of us? Has anyone tried putting something like '(preferred method)' next to their e-mail address on their CV, or is it not recommended at all?

Guys a little more help please.

Basically i'm having two cv's now I think is best. One for my music/film/media job applications where it shows I've worked in a studio, done a film etc.

However, this means I don't have enough space on my CV to mention I worked for Tesco which I think will be better for the "normal" jobs i'm applying for.

Now, from the start of 2009 I was studying music till the end of 2009. Then from the beginning of 2010 till the end, I was doing studio work and film work. Now, when I take these out, I'm not sure how to word what I was doing to explain this gap, and do you put this under a header?

Gap Explanation:
During this time I was doing music and film work in a studio?

Slightly pooping myself at the moment. I'm going through the required training for my new role mentioned earlier in the thread and there is just so much stuff to learn. :(

Whenever I'm starting a new job I always have a little A5 notebook with me for the first few weeks. Constantly jotting down notes and reminders to myself. Who cares what it looks like to your new co-workers - you're showing your eagerness to learn the new task and pick it up as best as possible.

Other than that they can't really expect you to learn at a superhuman rate, can they? Just don't be ashamed to ask questions, even if they seem obvious.

Currently filling out an application form for Evans, it's seems fairly simple but I'm sure I'll put something stupid somewhere. xD

anyone been watching the news about the olympics G4S debarcle. yet again a security company who refuses to train people up and expects them to be avaibable in the jobless pool fully trained.

even if they took temps on via the work programme (which G4S have the contract for) and trained them up it would save them more money than being 3500 staff short as well as have a pool of guys who would be willing to do part time or short term contracts when needed even if it didnt provide perminant jobs.

just shows how much of a shambles the vast majority of security companys are within the uk as far as training. as well as other companys who seem to expect to get full qualififed employees with years of experience rather than investing in people.
