Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Well, that went a lot better than last time. Of ~2000+ applicants, they interviewed 24, with the final 6 today, me included

Furthermore, everybody else at the assessment day was either a solicitor already or was a paralegal - I felt like I really achieved something by even being there considering my experiences were so few and far in-between compared to the other candidates.

As a result, my commercial knowledge was probably lol-worthy considering 3 of the others already worked for the firm as paralegals. Still, I really enjoyed the interview since there was a fair bit of banter between me and the two who interviewed me.

So, we shall see - I should find out by the end of the week!

Glad people are progressing :)

I'm hoping something I forwarded my CV to the other day takes me up on an interview....Otherwise I've been promised a job in Wickes to tide me over :p

Get in contact with that HR reference and explore to find those additional references. Currently the wording "in the job to do what ever I wanted" but not have references may equate to feet up on the desk.

It was not a standard 9-5 job. I was sent aborad for a rotation (for 6 weeks) working with different sections within a camp (to do with the oil industry) so all the "managers" as such (and everyone else) would disappear after a couple of weeks to be replaced by someone else (as they were all on 6 week rotations as well). So essentially all the people I worked with for the first few weeks had left during the second half.

The only people that actually work 9-5 for months at a time were the people back in England etc. who had no experience of my work. :)

My old company said they're hiring again, only temporaries though..ah well, better than being stuck like this.

I said that ;)

The uncertainty of temporary work isn't ideal though.

Indeed...However I hope you aren't referring to the tempory work I was offered at the metal works, as I couldn't go back there due to not wanting to damage my ears and aggrevate my tinnitus even more :)

It's not ideal no, but finding a full time job with prospects untill atleast Christmas is not easy atm

The opportunity I mentioned is shift work.

Any permanent job will do for now, especially when you have dependants to support and rent\bills to pay. What about this job in Wickes you mentioned? You know someone there?

Well I have my first job interview lined up :)

Small company (my previous product targets almost equate to their yearly revenue) but it's close and it will be a nice change from large organisations and completely different market too :D

Cool, wasent having a dig/moan if it came across like that :p

Yeah, my friend is a type of manager there, I did fill in the application form and everything, but when he handed it to his boss, he got me to forward it on to this IT company...So hey! :p

That's a point, I got a phone call from them today...And I got the dreaded "tell s about yourself question" ...Absoloutely hate those, but he says I sound good, just i'll be joining as a trainee, which is fine be me considering most of the work i've done hasen't been support or 'specifically' field engineer work as such...

So I really am hoping, it sounds rite up my street :(

That, and its about half an hour away, which is just awesome, and the roads didn't seem to bad before when I was driving to my previous company everyday.

Best of luck buddy :)..Small, tight nit companys are awesome to work for.

Agree with that.

I went from busting my balls god knows how many hours a week for a large corporation, to working for a smallish (though part of a large group) local company 5 minutes away from my home. Salary is better, I never need to work past 5.30, everyone is friendly and less intent on screwing everyone else as they're less career orientated. CV is still intact as it's a lot of responsibility for my age.

Small companies can also provide that sense of togetherness and common goal and generally provide a more pleasant working environment.

I've just joined the ranks of the job searchers myself here.

I'm an IT contractor so obviously it's expected that you will have some gaps between contracts, but it's still not particularly pleasant having no money coming in.
My current contract is up in mid October so have just started looking this week. There's definitely fewer jobs around than previous times when I've been looking, but I've had a fair bit of interest from various agents already so will see how it goes.

That's another advantage you have over me, your own transport. It certainly opens up a lot more job opportunities.

Apologies for asking, if you don't wish to answer then far enough. :)

But is there a 'reason' you can't drive? Like eye site or something? Or is it a mixture of costs and never having the funds to get round to doing it?

Hopefully I get my phone call today! :D...I might just cry otherwise

That. Insurance is a big hit for under 25s, and (here's the catch 22) my jobs never paid well enough to afford one.

Hah, I hear you, Insurance was horrible when I first started :p (18 or something?)...It's not so bad now at 23 with the no claims

If you went third part fire and theft on a workable car it wouldnt be too bad, someone i know my age just insured and its £200 for the year, so it can be done.

Managed to have a car and stuff on under 12k, granted a lot of it went on the car, but hey, having other dependcies etc doesn't help towards car funds...So hopefully you get something that can help towards that.

Is there no where commutable on bus? When I started my first 'proper' job I had to get a bus that took over an hour there and about 2 hours on the way back :p

Oh, just had an interview as well for a local company, seemed to go really well...They have two people leaving by the end of the month (companys is rather small in regards to employee size) so hopefully there aren't many applicants.

Sounds rite up my street and all...nice and varied.

You need to look at London rents and then get back to me on that ;)

The employers inflexible attitude is a problem. They don't want to deal with people who use public transport, at least when it comes to IT. I've even had this issue with regular office jobs in a fixed location. Obviously their opinion is what decides the successful applicant...
