Forgot how bad job searching was :(

When I finished college in mid 2007 I went straight onto Job Seekers as I wanted to get into work straight away, first signed on in Juy 07, was on it until Oct 07 when I finally got the job I wanted. Never really got many calls dispite applying for god knows how many jobs (probs because I was only 18 at the time) but to start with I was dreading applying for Job Seekers as I had heard how difficult it and long for some people it was to apply for other benefits like DLA & pensions etc but luckily it was much easier than I thought, first phoned up the JSA helpline & had a date confirmed for an interview in the job centre, went along & first signed on and got paid 2 weeks later. Easy as that but after 6 weeks of so of going signing on, you get to kinda know the same guys who go there as well like "alright mate hows things! C ya in 2 weeks mate" lol but I got speaknig to a couple of the lads who I used to see everytime I went, one of them was originally on the sick from work because he had done something to his knee and he had a doctors note and everything to say he was not fit to work, and at the same time when he first went on the sick the company he worked for went bust!

So that left him jobless but at the same time he could not go back to work because of his knee and he sent off everything to try and get DLA and dispite having this doctors note to say he was not fit to work for a good while the DLA people would not give him DLA even though he was still entitled to it as well! In the end the DLA people told him to bugger off and apply for JSA to get an income, I couldn't believe it as much as he couldn't either!

Back in May 08 I got told that they were not going re-new my working contract (was currently on a 1 year school term contract) because of the low budget that was for the wages (start of the recession) and they had to let me go at the end on my contract, but my contract did not end until the following August, but this still gave me time to look for a new job because I worked in a school & the summer hols started in July and I would still be paid up to the end of Aug when my contract finished & had 8 weeks holiday. Spent most of the day everyday during those 8 weeks looking for work. Had a lot of phone calls but only had around 3 interviews. 2 of them went really well, the first one I was the last person again another condidate but they chose the other one in the end. The second interview went well as well but their was 6 of us there for interviews. Never heard back from them though so took that as a no lol. August came and I started to get a buit worried because after september I would not have an income then my dad gave me a job at his place doing office work etc and I am still here now and I like it :) My advice is just to keep on looking, you will find somewhere eventually even if its something that you least expect! Always let other family members know that you are still looking for work because one might turn up with a job offer! ;)

You need to look at London rents and then get back to me on that ;)

Well yes...I wasn't referring to rent, I was refferring to the cost of running a car :)...Hence I said about other costs being a bit of a factor for you.

The employers inflexible attitude is a problem. They don't want to deal with people who use public transport, at least when it comes to IT. I've even had this issue with regular office jobs in a fixed location. Obviously their opinion is what decides the successful applicant...

Bit weird...Never had that issue, my old place didn't mind at all, maybe as I was young at the time. Just need to find a decent enough company mate, at the end of the day if you can show you have worked your butt off in previous companys then hey.

Good luck :)

Thanks :)

Good news...Got the job! Start Monday........So yay! Happy as larry! :D

I know, but priority-wise the rent needs to be paid first :)

Which still eludes me thus far. Still no word from the managed services firm, I'll try calling them again but they don't seem interested in me.

Very true. I've had a couple of weeks painting that my dad's given me, and a couple of days working for people in their gardens. Unfortunately for me it's not a full time job. It's made me a little money but now i'm still broke and need a proper job...:p

Just wanted to bounce the ideas of cover letters off people.

This is one I constructed for the last application and I thought I'd seek some critique for feedback:

Well I am now working Full Time hours in Debenhams up from my weekends, so not so bad!!

Looks like I'll be waiting until the turn of the year for some serious oppurtunities in the architectural world but hey this will keep me going :)

Heh, most certainly...Hopefully you can find an employer not too far away from you...or one that doesn't mind buses :p

Which still eludes me thus far. Still no word from the managed services firm, I'll try calling them again but they don't seem interested in me.

If you want it, chase it buddy :)

Thank you, I cannot wait personally :)

Congratulations :)

Least you sound as if you enjoy it, plug away! It's a good fill in for the CV also.

After a few days of waiting, I finally received a phone call from a senior partner to inform me that... they want to offer me a training contract :D:D:D

I'm absolutely over the moon - at the assessment center I was by far the most inexperienced person there, yet they still picked me.

Epic win!

Now we don't have to see you complain all the time :p

Well done.

Out of the blue - another offer for an interview :)

I have my first interview tomorrow and I'm trying to convince myself it's just yet another business meeting between Nick Inc and <insert customer>. Feeling slightly nervy but not spaced out which is a good sign - so it's feeling just like a large meeting.

The meeting is with the HR director, so it's got the hallmarks of a prelim filter and as the size of the company is small - I can see this being a "get a feeling of" before the next interview with the person I'll be reporting to.

First day at the new job, not so bad so far :)

Reasonably enjoyable, hopefully fit in more and enjoy it more as and when i learn the company systems etc.

Hope everyones luck is going okay!
