Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Is it just me or does anyone else really struggle with those applications where you have to re-write all of your CV and experience into different text boxes and then do a mini essay on why you're the one they want to hire.

Was that the one at Southampton Uni? I gave up after a few mins.

Had to do a similar one for my current role.

However less people are likely to apply so more chance of getting an interview.

I was made redundant at the end of June. Got a decent payout. I'm still unemployed.

June - Took some time out, looked for jobs here and there, got some personal things done.

July - Applied for first job. Interview went great. Turned down. 'Overqualified'.

August - 2nd Job interview. Went amazing. Weeks went by hearing nothing. They closed the role without hiring anyone.

September - Went travelling. Applied for 1 job a bit above my pay grade. No interview.

October - Applied for some 'out there jobs' that I fancied. No interviews.

November - Applied for a job below my pay grade, but with the chance to move up. Really like it. Interview went really well. Apparently between me and one other person. Haven't heard a word a week and a half since. Still waiting.

This sucks.

I know what you mean pal. You can interview well and keep getting nowhere as somebody will have performed a tad better than you.

Considering how a lot companies treat and see their employees they should feel lucky they get anyone applying, they should also do more when rejecting someone even if they are supposedly "overqualified"

That logic would only make sense if there were more jobs than applicants.

I'd potentially call the recruiter, or if it was direct email reception/the contact.

:)

Onwards and upwards pal

Thanks chaps. I have contacted them twice. First time they said they'd let me know by the end of the week. Nothing. Emailed a week after that deadline and now waiting for a response. Will be 4 weeks since interview this Thursday.

Edit: Aaaand they said no. Fml.

Have you considered recruitment? Don't really need any qualifications, just need to be good with people and highly motivated.

First interview for me yesterday. Was for a job i think i'd be good at but have no direct experience for some of the elements.

Felt i got on with the interviewer and had a good rapport with him. I let myself down in a quick excel test though as it was an older version of excel (2007) and i skipped that and i couldn't for the life of me get it to conditionally format the way i wanted which annoyed me.
I did spot a few issues with the test though, not sure if they were there on purpose to trip people up though or teething issues because i was the first candidate by the sound of it.

One unusual question was to think of all the implications if i company designed a product to eliminate tooth decay for life. I suppose it was to test how people think things through.

I had

*The impact on dentists as they would only have, braces/cosmetic work
*How to price the product, no repeat business but equally a high price would put many customers off
*The affect on the companies other products - Do they produce toothpaste?
*Legal Impact if someone developed tooth decay in 30-40 years
*What % do they class as eliminate? Colgate etc probably only suggest 99%

Similar situation to Eliot.

Took voluntary redundancy in October, it'll be a good opportunity for something new after a very long time in my last role I thought..

Keep getting pipped at the post. Last one I had 4 interviews over 2 weeks, including a 2 hour test. Really happy all the way though, tonnes of positive feedback, very pleased with the test score.. lost out on one area to another candidate.

It's soul destroying.

Wooooo, got through to the final interview stage in mine. It's a skype interview with 2 of the american finance team as it's an American company.

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with Americans in job interviews? Is there anything which should be done differently?

That sounds weird in that they're different people but i know their attitudes to work can be differently to English folk.

Test your Skype setup thoroughly - make sure your lighting is right, have a neutral background, make sure your audio setup is spot on.

This is something i need to confirm. Not sure if i need to attend the local offices where i went for the first interview or if i just do it from home. Haven't really heard much from the recruiter and it's all on hold now till after Christmas anyway.

They suggested they only had 3 candidates to email though so i'm fairly hopeful.

Unfortunately you have to remember it's not you.

I have been interviewing people (thus on the other end) and it can come down to fit and expectations.

In the role now I had 7 interviews over 6 months. The previous company had something like 5 interviews over 4 months - and I was pipped to the post at the last interview.

Attended three assessment centres for graduate roles in audit and finance. Didn't make it past any of them. So absolutely gutted. Felt like I did pretty well during them as well, except the first one in which I was quite nervous initially and they rejected me on the basis of lacking confidence. I found out they gave the job to someone with a physiotherapy degree from a much much lower ranked uni. The others haven't given me feedback yet.

For one of the assessment centres, they told us that there is only 1 position left before it began. There were 8 of us there. This was just a terrible start as I cancelled another assessment centre on the same day so I could attend this one. I felt I did as well as I could and that I also showed more team working ability during the group exercises than the others but was ultimately rejected.

I worked hard during university to make sure I could graduate with a first class and make job finding easier. Now that I have that, I can't get past these assessment centers and it's soul destroying.

I've practiced the assessments beforehand, read textbooks on interviewing, and just read as much as possible online about passing these things. Just can't get the right impression across to the recruiters :( .

Also been applying to entry level accounts/finance assistant roles and I'm lucky to even get a rejection email. My CV has been looked over by my uni careers service and they are pretty happy with it. I seriously don't know what more I can do.

I would do ACCA self-study but my degree means that I will get all the exam exemptions for ICAS anyway. So I don't know if this would actually bring a benefit. bahh.
