Forgot how bad job searching was :(

I need a job ...

I'm 24, living at home, been working for the family business since i left sixth-form at 18. I have hardly any money because the business has been struggling to pay its debt for the god knows how many years.

Ive got average GCSE results, and 2 A Levels, and ive got no idea what to do with myself ;(

Have you considering going to uni? Even at 24 you'll still be eligible for the whole lot of loans and grants offered to 18 year olds. Not to mention that uni's are often more lenient with 'mature' students when it comes to qualifications.

I'll be 21 when I go and all the uni's I've contacted would be happy to accept me. I'm sure it'd be the same for you.

Many colleges also offer "Access to Higher Education" courses which last for a year and leave with you a qualification that would further increase your chances of getting in to a uni you like.

Why would he want to go to uni? Rake up £15k worth of debt and lose 3 years for the sake of a job at £22k? 6 years Exp in the family business whatever it is must be blagable for something.

I've been meaning to apply for jobs for ages... my motivation is seriously lacking, specially now I accidentally formatted my CV......... twice :(

I'm currently rebuilding it now... but a 19 year old with very little previous (yet relevant) work experience... although I feel I can do many of the jobs I'm look at, I'm not sure if i'll even be considered.

Only one way I can find out I suppose.

Looking! LOL

like busses, all of sudden ive got them left right and centre.

2 different offers from work but also been accepted for cable&wireless grad scheme.
Im taking the C&W offer.

I'm almost in that situation too, been looking since June for a proper job and all of a sudden I end up with three possible options, Masters, Australia or a Job here... All are tentative at the moment depending on funding, driving licence and acceptance for an interview. Hopefully all goes well and I have to choose between three!

Why oh why they couldn't be staggered or earlier I don't know... Having said that I have had another interview before that I didn't get the job for so...

I've been a bit like that the last couple of months, so difficult to get any motivation. :(

It's been a bit better the last month but still not brilliant.

I have two NHS IT posts in my department coming up in the next couple of days, sadly the boss has decided to go to an agency to get the staff as it's a fix term 18 month contract :(

It's a shame as the NHS application system is great, but the wheels of HR grind incredibly slowly once you're in the process!

Well my contract ends end of April. The boss has said he's interested in renewing again (this will be the third renewal) but that's dependant on the rest of the organisation and they can't start renewal procedures until mid April. Fingers crossed but I'm assuming that post April that will be the last one if I get it. So in the next few weeks I'll update my linkedin, CV etc etc to start looking as it may take a few months to find something.

It's been an interesting experience and one that I think has taught me a lot more than the other permy job would have done. If they renew it'll be 6 months (they have done 2 months at a time due to the finance/HR team).

Hope it all works out for you dude

I would update the CV anyway, and have a look around at what is about :)

I'm currently working at Wickes in the delivery Vans, it's not bad actually, basically just at the gym for 8/10 hours a day or so :p

Still looking, applied for an ICT Technician role at a school so hopefully that pulls through :)

Perhaps this may not be the place to ask, but do people agree that having had too many jobs is a problem? I'm 26, and in my time I've had 10 separate jobs if I sit down and count them. Admittedly, that is counting 1 part-time weekend job I held whilst I was in college, and a smorgasbord of temporary positions I've held over the years. I've only ever had three permanent jobs after leaving college, which I don't really think is excessive as I can provide good reasons for leaving in each case. However, I can't help but think that prospective employers are looking at the number of entries on my CV and dismissing it without even reading it, on the grounds that I upsticks and leave on a whim, or that I'm somehow unreliable.

It's getting to the point now where I feel as if I'm banging my head against a brickwall trying to get anywhere in life, I may as well accept my fate and coast along as a shelf-stacker or petrol station cashier or something for the rest of my days. :(

Yes too many jobs, if I see it on a CV, means

1) The bloke isn't a 'stayer'. If the work gets tough (and it will) or he doesn't like something, he'll bottle it and leg it. Probably after we've paid for him to be trained :(

or

2) The people employing him once he's actually there have been thinking 'Whoa, he's actually not very good' and dumping him (although not officially firing him, there are plenty of ways to 'persuade' employees the future isn't there and getting them to leave!)

:(

Sorry mate - that's how I see it on a CV :(

Dump your part time jobs off the CV, as they will just be a turn-off to people reading it. Make yourself sound like a professional. And certainly not someone who'se gonna jump-ship the moment the seas get choppy!!

If you have a string of temporary jobs just list it as 'agency work' or 'contracting' and the dates, along with any relevant skills you learned on those jobs.

Just stick the last few jobs down, forget the rest. I haven't got much experience and have had a few part time jobs but replace the oldest job with newest so only have 3 jobs at any one time.

Well got rung up about the Telephone interview I had the other day. Got to go up to Scotland next week for a face to face. :)

Luckily they offer a pretty good expenses package so it shouldn't cost too much.

Grrr! Spent the whole day waiting for a call to tell me whether I got the job or not, only for it not to come... Maybe tomorrow... It's a bit annoying having to wait around by the phone though, something to be said for email... :p

And... Academics! Pain in the ****! I'm waiting for two of my old lecturers to write references for me for a masters application, 2 months and 4 reminders each and they still don't seem to have written them. :(

Hope the interview went well anyway :) And all the best for the phone call!

I'm still working for Wickes as a stop gap...Trying to figure out what I actually want to do in life...still got no idea

Holy thread necromancy!

At last, I have secured myself a permanent full time job. After working various temp contracts since January '08, and being unemployed since February I have been victorious in persuading a prospective employer that I am in fact, employable. The role's working with a tanker firm in admin and planning. It's a typical office based Mon-Fri 9-5, and as bonus the money's better than I thought it was going to be. Huzzah! :)
