Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Looking at your profile you have just turned 18, unemployed for a year.

So qualification wise i'm guessing GCSE at best, no offence meant by this but you need to get some skills behind you, whether it's a trade or Uni etc.

I imagine it's all you hear (if it's not, it should be) but it's for the best.

i have a gnvq lvl 1 in welding and a city n guilds Registered digital installer certificate i dont know if they help me in any way tbh

Im still at college, and i still live with my dad so i still get looked after a little bit. however ive been searching for a part time job for a long while now, the last job i had was temporary work at tesco over christmas last year. Theres nothing going at the moment and even if there is i often cant do the job because of my college hours. It annoys me because im at the stage in my life where i need to start fending for myself but i cant, i want to work, i nedd the extra experience and the money, but i also feel bad on my dad as well, he puts up with me too much

I haven't had a full time job since July and since then ive been doing part time bar work and agency work but it's no good, even with my determination im struggling to make enough money.

What does bug me is that I worked in a factory for a couple of weeks, with one of the agency jobs and there was 50+ full time polish workers per shift! Even the supervisers and production managers were polish, there all okay..

Housemate lost his job today. Passed his probation working for Sky at a call centre and was supposed to be getting his contract extended but a lot of the workers are not being taken on because there isnt enough work now after xmas. Got told at 4pm today, apparently even the supervisors didnt know about it

So where abouts do you people go looking for jobs? Newspapers, online etc

Just looking for some suggestions because I am considering a change sometime in the near future.

Reed is ok for a start

Guardian Jobs I quite like

Milkround is quite good for Graduate Schemes

Direct approach is a must by visiting company websites

A mix of paper, local ads, websites and direct approach works well.

Asking at the business, newspapers, websites (both the Reed type and company ones), asking existing employees, sending speculative applications.

The best reply I got from them was "Dear Sir, Thank you for your application for XYZ job. We regret to inform you that you were not successful on this occasion" and so on. Not much point wasting time on the long application form when I could be applying to an organisation that actually values real talent.

Haha, i got the same from them and it takes ages to fill out their flipping application.

Best one was when i applied for a job in abbey nation (santander), i got an automated reply within 5 mins of applying telling me they already people better suited but i still may have a chance.

I guess you need some magic ninja skill to be an administrator these days. It's not like it happened once, every time I apply for a similar vacancy it never goes past first stage. May as well focus my searching.

An experience filter? There's probably a checkbox for "6 months relevant experience" somewhere on the form.

I've given up applying for NHS jobs. I've applied for about 10 or so over the past 2 years, spending 3-4 hours at a time on a ridiculously long-winded application form, only for them to not even have the common courtesy of sending you a generic autoform "Sorry, you've been unsuccessful" email.

Very few companies send the "sorry you were unsuccessful" email I've found. Either for actual job applications or speculative emails so it's not just the NHS.

It's an online form though, hardly difficult to have an automated response. It wouldn't be so annoying if it was a more simple application. If the local mobile phone store manager bothers to write to me then I'm sure the NHS can change the settings on their auto-responder...

That just sounds pretty bitter to me. I've certainly not had that problem - any application I've made (Well not that I've made many, but certainly enough!) has been met with 'We'd like to invite you to an interview' or 'You have not been shortlisted on this occasion'.

If you've got a suggestion for improving the success rate I'm all ears (or should that be eyes) :)
