Forgot how bad job searching was :(

What would you call my job role then. I mean that is the term that is used and I intend to use it at this moment in time. :o

I would say technician. Engineers have more of a creative design / problem solving element in their work AFAIK. Nothing wrong with being a technician, although I do think engineers protect their job title pretige a bit too zealously.

It really doesn't mattter. Just use your job title :)

Okay then. Assistant Design Technician-execpt I am not a Technician.

Doesn't work well does it?  :)

I was just telling you to always use your job title, as in the one that you have been given. It doesn't really matter what anybody on here or anyone else thinks.

However, the use of the word engineer has been relaxed over time, and some people have an issue with that. I don't, but then I'm not an engineer.

I was on your side. Not really sure why I deserved your response...

lol...So anybody who works with metal is an engineer basically then and everyone else isn't?

Funny...you are what your job title says, you are an engineer of sorts..Get over it?

Chuffed for me flatmate, just graduated in design for industry and has 2 interviews lined up this week.

He thought it was going to be tough looking for work as a designer but all the hard work that has been put in so far is paying off

Now now ladies. Job snobbery isn't cool!

It's not really snobbery and it's really only the UK which abuses the term engineer so badly.

In more enlightened countries the term engineer really does carry as much respect as the term doctor and they would be as horrified at our abuse of the title as we would be at a first aider calling themselves doctor.

ps. I'm not an engineer, I'm not smart enough for most fields of engineering. Software Engineer I guess, but tbh I always thought that was a bit cheeky to real engineers.

Most excellent news :)

I believe in many countries on the continent once you become a 'real' engineer, it becomes a title, much like Dr does here.

e.g. Stan Smith becomes a fully fledged engineer

Mr Smith --> Engineer Smith

Everyone is an "engineer" here, even the blokes that take away my refuse.

It annoys me when you send CV's off and don't even get a reply from some employers. I've only ever had replys from big employers. I guess they must be so overwhelmed with job applications.

If anyone knows of any jobs going in Stoke, give me a shout!

Had an interview at a games manufacturer yesterday. Never had to sign a confidentiality agreement before entering a building before. Fingers crossed for next week when I find out if I get it.

Felt a bit painful because I am a little overqualified as a graduate applying for an internship paying so little. I do hope I get this job or I'll be selling one of my graphics cards!

IMHO anyone who would not be immediatly eligiable for chartered engineer status is not an engineer.

Whilst I would agree with you to a certain extent, at the same time there is a certain amount of conflict with the term engineer. Like you, I would agree with your definition of engineer and as a member of the IEE or now IET, they are very active in trying to reclaim the title. The problem is that as an engineer I have worked under people that under the IET guidelines would not be technically called engineers yet despite not having the relevant qualifications (part of the criterior for becoming an engineer under IET guidelines) are some of the most creative thinking, mathematically compentant people I have ever met and are every bit an equal in terms of competance compared with their Chartered peers.

Boom! Recieved a letter from Clyde Marine Training after my recent application, they'd like to see me for an interview and will be in touch to make arrangements. There is hope afterall. :)

I have to agree with the comments about "engineers". My currenty title is a "systems engineer" at an IT company. Really I'm a glorified technician with a few more responsibilities - sort of designing the layout the IT systems/network as well as the 1st/2nd line stuff.

Admittedly it does sound more impressive, but I do wish england as a whole would get rid of the stupid exaggerated job titles.

I'd say overall it was a good thing, there's far too much occupational licensing...

"An engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering, concerned with applying scientific knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical problems. Engineers design materials, research and develop and copy the design known as reverse engineering, structures, machines and systems while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, safety and cost."

I can't see anything wrong with this definition.

Just add chartered at the front if you're chartered? What's so hard about that?

Hmm, been at my job for just over a week, and I don't understandwhy theres more than 2 of us at any one time, there just isn't enough work going on!

And to top it off now what with the money situation being naff, I'm now REALLY struggling to scrape together enough to pay for the bills this month :(

It baffles me how they think someone at my age living in a house renting can live on what they've offered me :(

Waiting on a call for a grad/intern job I was interviewed for. But after being told at interview it was only £15k, when I do the math and take off taxes and the modest commute I'm sitting at just over 10k net which makes me angry considering it will be in the region of a 40-50 hour week. I need the money (and I haven't been made and offer as of yet) but it just takes the biscuit. I can't wait till the grad job recuitment period begins in August again

Hammered so many applications and then actually started to get interviews. I got offered 3 jobs and a possible 4th today, but have accepted a new better job :D proper chuffed as it's been such hard work going.

Onwards and upwards and keep plugging away guys!
