Forgot how bad job searching was :(

50 a week? Good luck with that!

Depends what you're looking for. For at least a while you should be looking for jobs in your sector of which you'll probably be able to find a max of 5 a week. Once you actually put some effort in to tailor each Covering letter etc. those 5 would be a full time job in themselves. A couple of thought out applications a week would be easily acceptable.

On the other hand if you're just looking for a dead end shelf stacking job then 10 a week would probably be a limit (unless you're just handing out CV's).

In the 6 months I was actively searching full time I probably applied for around 25 proper graduate jobs in the area I wanted to work and got 3 interviews. That was almost full time searching (4-6 hours a day, 6-7 days a week when searching, researching and writing cover letters are all included). I then got a christmas temp job and my job application number dropped massively as I didn't have time search and send that many any more. That temping destroyed my will to search for proper jobs and I ended up looking and applying for a proper job every few weeks after I left... :(

Either way if he puts one thing down a week he'll still get JSA...

I'm a web programmer and i've easily applied for 50 jobs in the past week. I've had a hit rate of about 50%. Of those 25, 7 have offered me interviews so far.

A covering letter should be 3-4 sentences max, so tweaking it slightly for each job takes 2 minutes. Sounds to me like you're trying too hard.

I agree, when I was job hunting I was easily applying for around 50 jobs per week (10 or so per night during the week) but some industries have far more jobs available than others.

Anyone who is a teacher here or done PGCE course? I want to apply soon for PGCE course but I have been reading on the TDA(Training Development Agency for Schools) that candidates usually need to have few days of school classroom experience before submitting their application via GTTR website :(. To me this seems similar to job hunting where you must have previous relevant experience to stand a chance.
I have been to few schools and they aren't willing to give me a volunteer assistant position unless I am already registered with a uni who will be providing the PGCE couse. I thought the whole point of PGCE was to train candidates to become teachers which obviously include placements so why the need for previous experience considering the deadline for first choice is 30 june:(. So now I am going to be rejected from teaching aswell:mad: considering I found job market for engineering extremely disappointing.

Edit: I already spoke to a maths teacher and she said it isn't must to do a volunteer placement. The whole point of doing such a thing is to see if you like the classroom environment or not lol. Here I am thinking I spent my whole education in classrooms from school to college to uni environement so I know exactly what to expect lol.

I did half a PGCE lol, quit cos it was a nightmare. I volunteered for a year, a week or so here and there, but one day a week regularly.

You will need experience of the classroom and children.

How will I get experience when school won't take me on? Also what was your subject and what was interview like? Did you do any additional activities like group discussion, written tests etc?

Currently in the same boat, been a graduate for a year now, during that year i haven't been applying hardcore, but i have started to over the last 4 months, looking everywhere i could for any job that matched my criteria and skills.

So far it's been pretty dyer, probably done about 15 application forms and sent out 20 + cvs. Been declined for a number of them and had an interview for 2 jobs. Currently waiting on the outcome of my bbc application currently at stage 3 or so.

I just really want to get a proper job, i just miss my independence, living at my parents for the year after uni was fine but now it's become a drag. Currently working 3 days a week in a retail job at currys.digital but my situation needs a drastic change.

Tomorrow will consist of more searching.

Bar Work / Kitchen / Cleaning / Office ...

Basically anything that can provide me with money whilst helping to save up for my Masters.

well, i guess if you couldnt give a damn what you do, as long as it pays, then you can put out lots of CVs easily.
Kinda hard when you are looking at specific industries and jobs though

No offense, but if you're serious about finding work then you should be doing 50 a week. You're currently doing one every 5 days....

A fair point. I was on a uni course and aiming for a first so I decided to put studying before jobs and was far too selective with which grad schemes to apply to. I think when I got interviews booked I also slacked in applying for other jobs. The fact I aimed for marketing when marketing budgets are the first to be slashed in a downturn didn't help either but it's where I'm aiming to work.

Live and learn I guess, I'll be hammering applications into all the schemes come August :D I've already had an offer from a temping agency so I'll be taking that up after my holiday.

I cannot understand how any local school's will not take you on.

Mine was primary. I had to do written tests, an interview where I was asked about my experience, my passion for teaching, you just gotta sound really into it, like you really want to teach.

Now here is an idea, why don't you phone your chosen university and ask the course coordinator if she can help you organise some volunteer work, obviously explain that you have tried many times to get volunteer experience but your schools haven't been receptive. After all the university has to co-ordinate hundreds of placement's for students each year so they will know who to ask and who to contact.

Surely that's exciting! What will you be doing?

Ahh it is and it isn't.

It's a simple £.750 an hour working for RBS in Wimbledon - admin support/data entry. It's going to be great earning but i'm in my student house for another month yet so living with 4 others...always going to be things going on and going to miss it by working. But then again, i'll have the £££ when i move out and hopefully if i go perm, i can get a flat sorted in London.

Prime example, pub crawl on monday night and i want to get wrecked but stupid work. :p

Started my new job Thursday :)

VERY different to what I am used to (ie people shouting down the phone etc etc and having 20+ calls to your name)...Everythings strangely laid back and relaxed!?

Anyway, we shall see how things go :)
