Forgot how bad job searching was :(

servicedesk
GET A SERVICEDESK 1 JOB
thats what you're always going to have to start on. progress from there!

Problem is, if you are like me, you have done service desk, you are sick to death of service desk!!! Yet i've had field experience anyway installing server cabinets on site...Can I fr the life of me find a field engineer job? Nooooooo

My advice would be if you're struggling to find a pure field engineer role look at other desktop support roles that are more than just 1st line phone jobs.

My first IT role was in a desktop team but we did loads, the phone was just something we each did every 6 weeks or so.

Just got a interview for a job with the IFDS (financial data company) basically just adminstrating and advising people on ISA's and things like that... only problem is, pretty nervous because a) my credit is not that good and they haven't said so but I'm sure they are going to look on that, b) it's very competitive to get in since the starting perks are really good, 16k private health, share scheme etc and you dont need any qualifcations for it so anyone can apply + i suck at interviews.

Yeah pretty nervous now, the only thing I got on my advantage is some university years (haven't even finished my degree) but my last interview of this sort was with Barclays and there were 40 year olds there that used to be managers /HR people so yeah..., have a feeling it's gonna be a waste of petrol but meh w/e.

Good luck everybody! :) My brother recently lost his job and is currently having no luck at finding another one.

My only advice would be to try and keep good routines and make the most of any free time!

Am I allowed to give details for a job opening at my place of work? seems a lot of people are looking for jobs at the moment so you never know if someone reads this and wants a job I could pass the CV on :)

Ok I've no idea how close these are to you, but just using Buckinghamshire as a location in a search these are the kind of things that I'd say you should be going for :)

Hello

Not bad :)

I just hate the helpdesk side of it, I think I want out from there entirely...I mean, I love solving problems, but I hate having people who have no clue what they are on about moaning at your because something doesn't work due to them not having common sense half the time.

I'll have to see, but thank you for that, gives me an idea anyway :)

I lost my job in December due to the business shutting down (I was managing an Independant Off-Licence). I thought i'd at least be able to get some form of benefits just to cover me while i searched for a new job, however i was told i couldnt get jobseekers, couldnt get housing benefit and couldnt get council tax benefit. Almost 4 months later and literally being 72 pence off going over my overdraft, i finally found a job, however the only reason i got it was because i knew the manager. I mustve applied for over 100 jobs and only ever heard back from about 10, declining my application.
Its minimum wage bar work but hey, it at least covers the bills. Ive handed in my application for Uni to start in september so fingers crossed...
Good luck everyone!

These types of jobs are the way to get out of helpdesk work though :)

As said, my first job was as a support analyst in a desktop support team. With 16 of us in the team and a help desk of 3 of us at a time you only touched it every once in a while. And when you weren't on the desk you were off doing 2nd, 3rd line stuff and a lot of project work.

Gives you the experience to then move on to the back end stuff.

Job searching is indeed sould destroying and every time I feel like walking out of my current and long term job I remind myself of the times I've been out of work.

Defo my lowest moments.

Because I am just getting a bit fed up with doing applications for the last 2 months with absolute no acknowledgement and the ridiculous job requirements for such simple minimum wage jobs I decided to write a cover letter.

Please let me know if you think I should change anything, the job I'm applying for is for data entry clerk:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have read with great interest on www.reed.co.uk the position of "Order Processor" which you are advertising, I have searched all my life for an opportunity to do such a glamorous job and can not tell you how happy I was that you are giving me an opportunity to do this 'temporarily' for as much as £7.00 per hour. Yes ofcourse I can pass a successful credit check, I have 2 mortgages, a car and no debts or outstanding loans, I hear a lot of talk about the recession but I don't know what people are talking about, I am rolling in money and that is why I am applying for a temporary position as a data entry clerk.

I have previous data entry experience which I believe makes me a perfect candidate, typing data into a computer software interface program is a very hard skill to master and I believe it would require years to train someone to be able to master such a feat. I am able to provide you with a 5 year living address activity with no gaps, I have a very stable life and have never moved before, luckily, I also save all my bills, just in case, I have to apply through an agency for a temporary job that requires me to prove where I lived for the last 5 years. Your 3 years of work references with no gaps is also not a problem, even thou I am desperately trying to find a job in the illustrious field of order processing, I still have a very desirable CV and have not had a problem finding work in the last 3 years, I am able to provide references from all the companies I have worked with in the last 3 years will suit your temporary position just fine.

I notice that you mention that unfortunately free parking is not available, that's not a problem, I am more then willing to pay for my own parking everyday for a job which barely pays above minimum wage, I am just glad I have all the requisites required for you to hire me, I don't know where I would be working if I had a perfect credit score, 5 years in a stable address and 3 years worth of references with absolutely no gaps in between. Overall, I am glad that you don't ask for a criminal check, unfortunately I was convicted of credit card data laundering and fraud a few years ago but I assume that is fine providing I have a good credit score and references to back up my brilliant work experience.

Thank you for considering my application,

I look forward to your response

Nice you'll definitely get the job. No doubt in my mind!

True, i'm just a bit fed up of having no money...im already over drawn this month...May give it a try :)

My first step would definitely be get in a better paid job to start with then. Once there you can work on moving on doing something else, but you'll find doing those sorts of jobs I posted will help no end in trying to get into a field engineer/server based job.

I've effectively gone desktop support > server support (now) > consultant/manager (depending on which job I take) :) That's over an 8 year period.

Cheers buddy :) Altogether I have around 7/8 years experience, sadly the bulk of that was in the first job (6 years) since then its the damn climate thats been against me...I'll get there eventually

It's just a shame, the job I have now is fine, just the money is naff due to me taking the 'lower end' job due to not getting the job I was interviewed for, but I just wanted to get back into the line of work that I was used to....And its only 15 minutes away drive...Ahh well, the other issue is I haven't been there a year yet....

hah I'm the last person who is sympathetic about being effected by the climate and location :p

I am losing my current job due to government spending cuts and live in an area where there really aren't many IT jobs.

For instance, on CWJobs, type in buckinghamshire as a location and you get 202 jobs returned. Type in Devon and you get a whopping 34, and that's more than normal! Hence why I'm either going to be working in Swindon or the South East (which is a bit extreme but where I need to be to do what I want to do).

Just got to keep trying though, and maybe look a little further afield to find what you want.

Aye...That may be true, but over half of those jobs are out of my league due to needing to now certain coding languages or having various courses under your belt ;)

I don't mind travelling as long as the job is right really, no issue at all
