Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Don't think he's talking about a rota, it'll be the standard thing that's in most contracts abotu partaking in work in a similar business to your day job.

I'd have just sucked it up to be honest, as said most IT contracts do have something along those lines in which are larglely there to stop you stealing customers, not to stop you doing your own work out of hours.

Can't help but feel you've been a bit hasty there and it's cost you a job.

Ah...Fair game then...I had to sign something saying I'm not going to do any work relating to the work I already do out of hours or something...

EDIT:

Meh...Still don't know if I should confront my boss about money issues or not...As I am struggling :(

I would, worth a shot, no harm in asking (most of the time!).

That's the thing...Do I risk saying something directly (Let face it, he knows i'm on next to nothing at my age) and potentially shoot myself in the foot and get told to stfu...

Or do I say it, and get told what I have already been told...that there is no money?

Well in all honesty you need to move jobs, but if that's proving hard next best thing is ask.

Aye...I just hate the prospect of being jobless...Although i'm hoping if I have to, I can get a 1st line job somewhere...

ugh :(...Stuff sucks

So I was made redundant at the end of March, and I have until the end of May to find a new job. Waiting to hear back from a publisher this week about a writing job for a computing magazine, also got an interview in Cambridge for a role training retail staff on IT products. If I have no success by the end of this week, it's 'get any job at all' time, which I was really hoping wouldn't happen :(

Fingers crossed for me please folks!

Best of luck buddy :)

Boring searching now and spamming out applications.

Got a rejection from the job I really wanted after being a bit misled and having a pretty horrible interview.

Rejected an offer last week of a frankly laughable salary which is what I was on as a Grad Engineer fresh out of uni 3 years ago.

And so the hunt continues and might start going towards Australia as both myself and the gf are on the list of high pointers :D

Well I was supposed to be getting transferred back to the UK since my leaving date here in Prague is at the end of the month but got no contract yet.

No idea what the hold up is and everyone that should know is out of office for the next 2 weeks and I will have left by the time they come back!!!

No it wasn't that, the contract specified I couldn't work in IT consulting for 12 months afterwards, had to give 6 months notice, and *ANY* outside work (not just IT) was unacceptable. The 2 days a year I do IT consulting (i.e. helping sort out a website or putting together a PC for someone were classified as consulting, so would have been in breach of contract for looking at a computer).

Edit: and that contract was a long way from being normal.

Double Edit: The sticking point was the company would not let me invest my own money with another company, regardless of what market the investment was in. It was an outrageous and unenforceable clause to the contract.

Does seem a bit weird then, what kind of business were they in out of interest?

Again a lot of jobs have the whole you can't work within x miles/with any old customers for a time period after, but saying you can't work in consulting when it's a sysadmin job seems a bit nuts!

6 months notice is a bit unreal as well, maybe not so bad after all.

That was just for the employee. The company had a shorter period. Like I said, it was heavily unbalanced and the second I raised this they dropped the offer. Most of the caveats were unenforceable, and the act of saying this was unfair basically cost me the job.

To be honest, if that's how they behave it would be a **** place to work for.

Started looking for another job, don't like working for Jessops at all.
Gonna be looking for something a bit more photography based but I doubt i'll get anything seeing it's super hard, which means i'm still stuck with retail :o

Finished contract on friday - have a perm job interview tomorrow :)

I have the experience, I know I can do the role, they seem impressed enough with the CV to waver the pre-interview Q&A questions.

Still doesn't stop the nerves! Spent today really bricking it! The new girlfriend has had to put up with me too.. so I've arranged a theatre trip on thursday as a thankyou for putting her to one side to prep for the interview.

I applied for a job as a delivery driver for ASDA months ago, and they've just got back to me about it. Anyone done a 'ASDA Magic' assessment centre before? Assuming it'll be a piece of cake and relatively straight forward.
Can't even remember applying for it to tell you the truth!

Yes I've done one.

IIRC it started off with them asking what carton character I would be, then we had to make a tower from donuts and selotape. :o

I didn't get the job, thank god.

Hah, yeah seems to be that sort of thing. "Interesting team challenges". Ah well, I'm not in a position to be picky so anything is better than nothing. Who cares if I'm another shelf stacker with a degree, at least it's money coming in!

Just got back from an interview at an agency, now got a tour of the site (Sainsburys Distribution) tomorrow and possible start date as early as this Monday! Chuffed! :D

WIN WIN!

Fingers crossed for you.

I might have an interview next week, just waiting to hear back from the company with details. It certainly sounded positive on the phone interview today.

I'm looking to get out of my job now. Two years in and working every evening and every weekend has taken enough toll. I want out, I want a social life - or at least the option for one - back again.

First step, I've redone my CV and updated my Monster profile. Next step I suppose is taking myself down the agencies.
