*** Forum Update - Official Issues Thread - Please check the OP for known issues ***

I’m not bothered but as you can see from the two screenshots I posted above it saves almost no space, which is the primary argument put forward.

Anyway, I’m glad the option to switch them off has been fixed.

But if it's now optional why are you so bothered?

To be fair to @EVH, he’s obviously put a lot of effort into updating and revamping the avatars, so I can understand the frustration he might feel towards people who are dismissing them.

But from my perspective, that’s not really the point. I quite like the avatars and I’m happy to have them on desktop, but on mobile they add unnecessary clutter and get in the way of reading the actual content.

As @Feek says, horses for courses . As long as everyone has the option then it should be all good.

I was thinking about this earlier. I’d support a preference to switch them off for mobile only, if that’s even possible? Who knows.

Having them removed just outright looks weird on desktop. Whilst I can’t recognise someone by their avatar it’s handy to spot posts from the other moderators or men of honour quickly.

It’s not really bothering me because I created them… it’s just the dismissal to “save so much space” when the reality is half a post :D

Cam the 'top' button be implemented again? getting the 'to top' arrow to come up requires scrolling up and down again and it seems inconsisent using Edge; the top button was at the bottom of the last post and was a simple way to easily get to the top without any problem.

For the mods: is the watched thread stuff getting looked at? I don't see it in the OP and a number of people have posted about how 'New Post' isn't quite the same and using filters means you now lose the 'new post' function. I've gone back to clicking on watched as that is easier but it was much nicer under the previous approach where it only showed the unread ones, with read ones under the managed threads... OR could it be setup so that all unread ones where shown at the top with a dividing line to separate out those without new posts?

It’s screen real estate that’s pointlessly wasted on every single post. It gets in the way of the actual content and doubles the amount of scrolling required to read the thread.

If you can’t see it, good for you, keep them active. But AFAIC it’s a massive UX win to be able to disable them.

Yet you unnecessarily quote a large image requiring more scrolling by everyone

oooh, Avatars are now gone on Mobile. And Desktop. Great work.

Too those that like them, great, keep them on. I always thought they were a bit unnecessary. If they were individual to a user or poster you could start to recognise individual users by their Avatar at first glance but they're not so just cause clutter and confusion.

just wondering...before the update... on mobile in portrait there was less username/avatar/details shown than in landscape, what exactly was it?

only username in portrait then join date/posts/location and avatar in landscape?

Possible Bug:

clicking on the folder icon to take you to the newest unread post isn't working properly. It keeps taking me to earlier posts and doesn't seem to remember across devices, e.g. looking on my mobile doesn't seem to reset the last post status so using a desktop then goes back to the same post.

Ah I thought that was just me. It used to take you to the last post in the thread if you had read all messages but now it just goes to the first post which seems odd as you can just click the title to do that.

The only thing I dislike with removing avatars is it also removes the online icon, shame you can't keep that while removing the avatars.

Possible issue on mobile when in landscape mode; the forum logo sits on top of the advert rather than next to it, wasting a load of screen space.

Page numbers still don’t show in portrait on mobile:

When looking at thread lists, the previous default behaviour if you clicked on the thread title was to take you to the first post, rather than first unread post (which could be done via the envelope if you wanted). Now both the envelope and the thread title take you to the first unread post - is that something I can change in preferences? I've not spotted anything obvious yet.

@EVH I would just say, it's not how the avatars look themselves that's the issue - I think they look fine.
It's just the fact that we all have to relearn all the avatars for what post count they represent and any change in that respect will probably not have had a good outcome regardless of how it was done.

Having them removed just outright looks weird on desktop.
Anyway I also tried turning the avatars off temporarily, but like you mentioned it does look super weird to me, so it'll just take some time to get used to :)
