Actually its just based off weight and price bands (royal mail has price limit and weight limit), we make losses on forum shipping all the time, main problem with free shipping is people tend to buy odd bits and bobs instead of bundling it in to 1 parcel which costs even more.

Chances are the reason it went DPD is it was more expensive, or someone put the weight in the system too high (if its a light item)

Yes, you wouldn't stick anything of any value with the Royal Mail.

My RM 2nd class free delivery came next day. Ordered yesterday and arrived today, seems that OcUK goes though the same mail centre mine does so probably not a coincidence!

2nd class is usually always quick, I tend to always use that service when ordering online, because it is cheaper, and still arrives with me quickly.

It would nice for people who are not in Mainland UK - NI, Ireland, or Islands - to receive reduced shipping, rather than free shipping as I know that's not economically very viable.

next day options arent free both dpd and rm 1st class, posted in the cs forum but still awaiting a response. anyone know any ways to help?

I posted in there this morning and got an immediate reply. They said order with DC/CC (ie. refundable) then let sales know (via CS thread) the order number and it gets refunded. Hope this helps.

That's exactly what I see, and its not working for me. I've opened a ticket and they're going to manually link my account (at some point soon, one hopes).

I placed an order... well a pre-order actually, about half an hour or so ago, and it all appeared to work fine.

Free next day delivery by DPD too... result!

I do have a small query though, so have left a post in the CS thread.
