Freelancer

I reviewed Freelancer for the now defunct Boomtown website and really enjoyed it. Only things that counted against it was the lack of a persistent online character (each server had a different version of your character. Good for different ships etc but crap if you only wanted to play one character and 'your' server was down) and the rampant hacking and cheating that went on within weeks of the launch. People were modding config files to fly faster outside warp than in it! I hope Elite Dangerous lives up to the hype.

I loved freelancer :D
like an mmo online and some clan servers were moderated pretty well

This week's humble weekly bundle is pretty much all of the X series to date.

It's worth it for vanilla X:TC alone, but given it also comes with a massive community mod pack that's brilliant it's an absolute steal for ~$6.

Freelancer.. ahh.

I hope star Citizen is something similar. Everything I have tried so far has not even come close to Freelancer.

I was especially disappointed with EVE online and the lack of "real free flight". It's a beautiful game to watch, but not interesting enough to play.

Can anyone recommend Freelancer single player mods? Perhaps maybe some graphical mods? I see some on moddb, but not sure which ones are any good.

I'm still a frequent Star & Freelancer player, so Star Citizen basically sounds like one big joygasm to me! I just hope it's as good as it seems on paper and that it has the same longevity as FL.

I'm even speccing up my new machine based on this and Elite: Dangerous.

Start by grabbing the Freelancer Mod Manager. That comes with a few already included. Most Mods run through FLMM.
From there, it all depends on what you want modded. Many servers have their own Mods, which may or may not include alterations to the Single Player, but check which ones they allow if you go online.

I *believe* the award-winning Crossfire Mod is the most epic one, where not a single thing remains untweaked and it greatly expands the original SP as well as online play.

Hamburg City is one of the most popular servers and they have a Mod. They're also pretty hardcore players. Speaking German helps, but isn't essential.
Discovery has one, or several, or lots, depending on who you ask and which of their servers you play on. They have LOTS of ships and mods and bits and pieces and things and stuff... There's a debate as to how well/badly balanced it all is.

For simplicity - Freelancer Universe aka FLU.
My favourite server, been up 24-7 since 2003 and while this has it's own Mod (minor things like commodities, ships and a few extra systems, with balances fairly good and always being refined), it will still work perfectly fine for vanilla Freelancer.
The people there are very friendly and helpful to talk to but it's quite an aggressive PvP culture, as in they're always up for combat. Newbies are given lots of assistance, though and you'll get more PvP in 3 days there than you will in 3 months on other servers. Worth noting that there are NO 'safe' systems - Expect to get shot... a LOT!

Thanks for reply. I am only really interested in the single player aspect of the game. So looking for graphical enhancements and as you mention I already had Crossfire Mod which extends the single player gameplay.

I already started playing the game and I am lvl 10 now. I did not install the Crossfire Mod thinking it would be best to do so once I complete the normal campaign. Should I install it now? Would it add anything to the vanilla campaign like better graphics etc?

Never got far last time, another game must have took my attention. But installed the Crossfire 2.0 mod and started from the beginning recently and I am having a blast.

The mod improved graphics and gameplay a lot. It practically feels like an remake.

If anyone else is finding Elite Dangerous empty and boring, I recommend giveing this mod a go while waiting for Squadron 42 :)
